Other things to note

The Crete Senesi refers to an area of the Italian region of Tuscany to the south of Siena. It consists of a range of hills and woods among villages and includes the comuni of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within the province of Siena.

Crete senesi are literally ‘Senese clays’, and the distinctive grey colouration of the soil gives the landscape an appearance often described as lunar. This characteristic clay, known as mattaione, represents the sediments of the Pliocene sea which covered the area between 2.5 and 4.5 million years ago. Nearby is also the semi-arid area known as the Accona Desert.

Perhaps the most notable edifice of this area is the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

The region is known for its production of white truffles, and hosts a festival and a museum dedicated to the rare fungus (genus Tuber).

Great location in a small town at only 10km away from Sienna. The place has all the comfort you need, even a smaller bathroom with second toilet in one of the two bedrooms which is extremely handy. The bathrooms are modern with a nice design touch. This makes it a great place to stay when having older children as well. The location is peaceful with lovely views from every window and a great starting place for trips and visits in the region, close to Sienna and other interesting places to visit. The appartement is relaxing and provides sufficient room. The extra big bed in the living room is even comfortable. Even the sea is not that far so to say (100km). Michele is the perfect host providing clear guidelines (French or English), giving excellent tips for trips and restaurants and being available for help or questions at any time. We simply spent a great time here.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Michele's apartment. The views are superb and the location whilst rural and secluded is close enough to the motorway to make the journey to visit beautiful Siena very easy. Sadly we didn't meet Michele as he was away, but his communication was very comprehensive and helpful.

The apartment was well equipped and comfortable, and Michele was a wonderful host. He provided many suggestions in advance of our trip, was always very responsive, and offered to do our laundry when there was an issue with the water. Michele made us feel very welcomed! The location was a good home base for exploring the hill towns of Tuscany. We enjoyed our stay immensely!

Michele's place is perfect for those who are hoping to explore the splendors of Tuscany. We were blown away by how amazing the Asciano setting is, how central the location is for exploring the Tuscan wine country and how perfect Michele's place is. To top it off, Michele is a very gracious host who took time out to recommend from a local's point of view what to do / explore in the area. We really hope to come back sometime!!!

We had an amazing long weekend at Michele's place. The apartment was clean and has everything you need. The location- well, looking out of Michele's window is like looking at a painting- absolutely surreal and breath taking! Absolutely a gem and definitely would recommend to anyone. We are looking forward to our return visit soon!!

The apartment is beautiful with breath-taking views of the Tuscan country-side. The place is spacious, clean and laid out for privacy with multiple travelers. There is one full flight of stairs to the place. It is quiet with the exception of some children and baby who live below (very nice people!). There is a washer but no dryer. The short hiking path was lovely and there are many opportunities for day trips to nearby villages. Siena is a must and 15 minutes away. The restaurant in Casetta near the farmhouse is excellent with covered outdoor seating. Just slow down and enjoy!
