Other Things to Note
The Crete Senesi refers to an area of the Italian region of Tuscany to the south of Siena. It consists of a range of hills and woods among villages and includes the comuni of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within the province of Siena.
Crete senesi are literally ‘Senese clays’, and the distinctive grey colouration of the soil gives the landscape an appearance often described as lunar. This characteristic clay, known as mattaione, represents the sediments of the Pliocene sea which covered the area between 2.5 and 4.5 million years ago. Nearby is also the semi-arid area known as the Accona Desert.
Perhaps the most notable edifice of this area is the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.
The region is known for its production of white truffles, and hosts a festival and a museum dedicated to the rare fungus (genus Tuber).

My stay at Podere le Splandole was wonderful, and Michele was a fantastic host. We became lost on the scenic drive to the house and Michele was very patient when he called to check if we were ok and to give us directions from where we were.
The view from the apartment was beautiful, and the house was clean and furnished luxuriously.
Michele was forthcoming with heaps of information on the area, attractions, restaurants, and scenic drives around the area.
Michelle was very welcoming and generous, and the overall experience was wonderful.
We loved our stay in this area. It's incredibly beautiful and the view from the windows are stunning. Michele was great about answering our questions and helping us get in. The apartment is clean and comfortably furnished. We used it as a base to explore the surrounding area and it worked well. It's not close to stuff so you can't walk to a market or dining spots but if you have a car that's not an issue and in return you have the views. Would have been fantastic if it had an outside patio/balcony! That was the only thing it lacked.
We LOVED this apartment. Stunning views and a gorgeous, spacious interior with everything we could possibly need. Michele was a very helpful and wonderful host -- before our stay, he provided us with detailed directions and lots of information on the area (eateries, supermarkets, points of interest, etc). We were also greeted with a bottle of wine! Our only regret was not being able to stay longer. Highly recommended; thank you Michele!
Michele and his family were the perfect hosts,
available, friendly and always willing to help to make our stay at Podere Le Splandole memorable. The apartment was over and beyond our expectations... conveniently situated, clean and comfortable, we got to enjoy the most stunning sunsets on the Tuscany landscape!
If I ever get the chance to go back to Italy one day, I will surely make plans to spend a few days at Michele's place. Many thanks and a warm "Ciao" to all the folks at Le Splandole who made our stay one of the highlights of our trip!
We stayed at Le Spandole for 3 nights for our honeymoon - the property was amazing! It was spacious, fully equipped, clean and had beautiful views. The location is also great, only 10 minutes from Siena. Michele was a wonderful host and provided detailed directions and restaurant suggestions prior to arrival. I cannot reccommend this enough and would definitely return.
