Other things to note

The Crete Senesi refers to an area of the Italian region of Tuscany to the south of Siena. It consists of a range of hills and woods among villages and includes the comuni of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within the province of Siena.

Crete senesi are literally ‘Senese clays’, and the distinctive grey colouration of the soil gives the landscape an appearance often described as lunar. This characteristic clay, known as mattaione, represents the sediments of the Pliocene sea which covered the area between 2.5 and 4.5 million years ago. Nearby is also the semi-arid area known as the Accona Desert.

Perhaps the most notable edifice of this area is the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

The region is known for its production of white truffles, and hosts a festival and a museum dedicated to the rare fungus (genus Tuber).

The apartment was well equipped and comfortable, and Michele was a wonderful host. He provided many suggestions in advance of our trip, was always very responsive, and offered to do our laundry when there was an issue with the water. Michele made us feel very welcomed! The location was a good home base for exploring the hill towns of Tuscany. We enjoyed our stay immensely!

Michele's place is perfect for those who are hoping to explore the splendors of Tuscany. We were blown away by how amazing the Asciano setting is, how central the location is for exploring the Tuscan wine country and how perfect Michele's place is. To top it off, Michele is a very gracious host who took time out to recommend from a local's point of view what to do / explore in the area. We really hope to come back sometime!!!

The apartment is beautiful with breath-taking views of the Tuscan country-side. The place is spacious, clean and laid out for privacy with multiple travelers. There is one full flight of stairs to the place. It is quiet with the exception of some children and baby who live below (very nice people!). There is a washer but no dryer. The short hiking path was lovely and there are many opportunities for day trips to nearby villages. Siena is a must and 15 minutes away. The restaurant in Casetta near the farmhouse is excellent with covered outdoor seating. Just slow down and enjoy!

After several days in Rome we wanted to tuck ourselves into the Toscano countryside for a bit. Michele's place in Asciano was the ideal spot. It was easy to find and close to wherever we wanted to explore by car. Michele sent excellent directions and helpful information in advance and was there to greet us at check-in. We hope to return to Asciano one day again.

They say the three most important things in real estate are "location, location, location" and with that in mind, this is a wonderful place to stay. If you are interested in being able to look out the kitchen window at the rolling hills of Tuscany, this is the place for you. The surrounding areas are beautiful. The apartment itself is quite nice and cozy. And an easy 10-15 minute jaunt into Siena. Michele was fantastic to work with. He gave more information in advance about the area, shopping, eating, and sightseeing than any AirBnB host I've ever worked with.
