A cheerful 1920s bungalow reimagined by two local artists — colorful, light-filled, and artistic. Three bedrooms sleep six comfortably, perfect for families or groups of friends. Vaulted great room, full kitchen, large yard, fire pit, high-speed fiber, EV charger. An easy walk across the road to Devils Backbone or up the road to Blue Toad Cidery. Eight minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Six minutes to Wintergreen. Exceptionally convenient, and right in the heart of the 151 Brew Ridge Trail.

The space
This 1920s cottage was remodeled by two local artists into a spacious, ebullient retreat. Colorful textiles, original artwork, handmade pottery, books, records, and comfy beds with great linens make it a genuinely cheerful place to land, and a perfect base for everything Nelson County has to offer.

The vaulted Great Room has a full kitchen, a solid dining table for 6, a cozy nook for board games and reading, and a large turquoise sectional that's dangerously comfortable for afternoon lounging. But don’t miss the outside!

Out back: a fire pit, a big yard, solar-lit evenings, and acres of open forest behind the house— feel free to roam! And you can walk across the road for dinner and drinks at Devils Backbone, or up the road to Blue Toad Cidery, no car required.

THE BEDROOMS

Three bedrooms sleep six comfortably, though it's equally perfect for fewer. The primary has a queen bed (OKOtex-certified 100% cotton (twins) and 100% linen sheets (queens), because your sleep matters) a private bathroom with shower, and French doors to the backyard. The second bedroom is large and light-filled, also with a queen, a desk, and a pack-n-play. The third has two twins — convertible to a king with advance notice, though honestly, the twins are cozier and the room works better that way. All rooms have space to hang clothes and stow suitcases. A shared bathroom with shower & washer/dryer is just off the hall.

We provide plenty of pillows (both feather and poly) and blankets, and the new insulated windows mean you'll sleep quietly despite being close to the action.

GETTING OUTSIDE

The Blue Ridge Parkway, with excellent trails, is 8 minutes from the door. Shenandoah National Park is 25 minutes. Wintergreen Resort is 6 — ideal if you want to ski without paying ski-resort prices for lodging. And it’s easy to access the extensive network of flat walking trails, right in the neighborhood.

Guest access
The whole cottage is yours! Facing Beech Grove Road, near Highway 151, but quiet and peaceful. The property is a few acres, and you are welcome to wander up behind it. The fire-pit is behind the cottage, so it's private from the road. The cottage itself is very quiet.

You can also walk from the cottage to our neighborhood loop of flat walking trails that go through fields and along the Rockfish River. Or, across the street to Devil’s Backbone Basecamp— a wonderland of beer and fire pits

This location is at the heart of the best of Nelson County: Minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, close to the flagship breweries, the best wineries, and the splendid natural playground behind the Rockfish Valley Foundation.

Other things to note
INTERNET
The cottage does have VERY high speed fiber internet so when you’re close to the cottage, you’ll have no problem calling, video chatting, and streaming. Most cell services work well here!

EVs
The cottage has a Tesla port Level 2 EV charger

DEVILS BACKBONE
Devil’s Backbone Brewery, across the road, occasionally hosts live music events. Weekend guests may hear live music from the brewery while in our property (often from well known bands). Most guests love this, but you might want check their event schedule online.

This property is not appropriate for ATV use.

If you're booking last minute, know that we do keep the calendar up-to-date, so you can trust the availability you see here.

INSECTS
We have elected not to use carcinogenic chemicals for insect mitigation because we care deeply about our water quality and your health and safety— these mean so much more to us than the inconvenience of some ladybugs in the windows. We live in the mountains, and humans are the minority species here! Urban dwellers may be surprised to see some insects inside, depending on the season. We vacuum these bugs away, and a lightweight vacuum is provided for guests to do the same. We do set traps and use targeted sprays, but at certain times, especially in the spring and fall, a few lady bugs and stink bugs are impossible to fully eliminate, despite our best efforts.

CLEANING
We aim to make the property comfortable for people with chemical sensitivities. We use Nellie’s unscented soap for laundry, and we make or buy bulk natural soaps and cleaning products.

The total nightly price includes Airbnb’s 15.5% service fee, Virginia’s 5.3% sales tax, and our country’s 7% Transient Occupancy Tax, and the living wage we pay our cleaner.

We follow CDC guidelines for cleaning protocols, and your hosts and manager are fully vaccinated.

Neighborhood highlights

Walkable to Devils Backbone Brewery, a winery, and two cideries, the cottage is in a wonderful neighborhood. Our neighborhood has a variety of small organic farms, and we’re a close drive to pick your own apple, peach, chestnut, blueberry, cherry, and strawberry farms. The cottage is on a road which makes it part of the Rockfish Valley Trail system, a series of flat loops that wind through our neighborhoods valleys, and along the rivers. It’s very easy to walk along the road from the cottage and intersect with some of the grass trailhead. The best wine shop and bistro, at Basic Necessities, is a four minute drive from the cottage. Or you can walk across the street to eat at the Backbone Basecamp. Wintergreen ski resort is an eight minute drive, and another two minutes up the same road takes you to the Appalachian Trail Head and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nelson County is FULL of attractions and beauty. A weekend is never enough!

Favorite song in high school: Here I am by Al Green
My husband and I moved from Memphis, where I taught English at a small college and where he wrote his first book, to return to the beautiful Rockfish Valley. We love our farm, our neighborhood, and sharing it. We both work from our home studios-- he writes books, I paint. In 2020 Airbnb tapped me to mentor new hosts & now I also consult with hosts, and co-host special local properties, helping folks host with intention and joy.
