NB: Please read note at end before sending a request!
You'll be staying on the top (second) floor of a low-rise, late 1940s block containing just three flats. The flats were originally council flats but were taken over by a 'social landlord' a few years ago. Since then, the kitchens and bathrooms have been replaced, double glazing and a new heating system has been installed in all of the flats. I have also put in laminate flooring & the flat's decorated in pale colours / white.
The flat has two bedrooms, a small kitchen, bathroom, an office / third bedroom and a large and sunlit living room. Due to the fact it's from the 1940s, the flats have a slightly deco feel to them and if you look out along the road from the balcony you'll see that they're set at a gentle curve.
The windows are big & light comes into the bedrooms in the morning and onto the 'living space' and balcony in the afternoon. If you're lucky enough to be here when the sun is shining, at around 3pm the living room is flooded with light!
Remember though, this is Manchester...
The bath is small but there is plentiful scalding-hot water, bubble bath and fresh towels! ; )
The guest room has a comfortable Natural Bed Company wooden bed frame with memory foam mattress & pillows. There is a locker, a beautiful old chest of drawers & an old school desk. Hooks for coats are behind the door.
Outside, you'll see that there are many green spaces in the immediate vicinity: it's fun to watch the squirrels leaping from tree to tree and there is a community garden two streets down and a community garden centre two minutes' walk away. Should you need to stretch your legs, Hulme park is a hop, skip and jump from here and the Manchester Aquatics Centre and Moss Side Leisure Centre are both within easy walking distance.
You'll find the nearest supermarket, a huge Asda, at 8-10 minutes' walk away and you'll be a minute or so from a small row of shops including a post office, takeaway, chemist and grocery stores. There's a health food shop & vegetarian cafe about 12-15 mins away on Oxford Road (On the 8th Day) and you'll find a wonderful vegan, sugar-free grocery store called Unicorn in Chorlton, about 10 minutes away by car.
For more up-market vegetarian eating I highly recommend visiting Bistro 1847 (2: in Manchester and in Chorlton). For more basic Indian home-cooking, try the Yadgar in the hip Northern Quarter rather than chancing Rusholme, Manchester's 'curry mile'...and if you're after gluten free pizza, Dough in Northern Quarter is excellent. V Revolution on Oldham Street sells vegan junk food and punk records...and for a real treat, there's a sit-in chocolatier called Bon Bon near Manchester Craft Centre that sells exquisite hot chocolate etc.
Whilst you're here, you will probably want to visit museums and buildings around the town: Might I recommend the following:
Castlefield Canal Basin (huge columns, mazes of bridges & canal boats. The pubs can be a bit busy if the sun's out but it's actually a nice place for a stroll at night when all the city lights reflect in the canals.
Museum of Science and Technology (clacking machines and a hall full of old aeroplanes)
John Rylands Library / Portico Library
There are several art galleries in the city, a regular museum and numerous places to see theatre and entertainment of all descriptions...Areas of town to discover include the gay village (Canal Street), Chinatown and the Northern Quarter. From the flat it would take you around 15 minutes to walk into the centre of town. Manchester's a very flat city if you're a cyclist, and you're around 12 minutes' walk from the nearest train station, Oxford Road, where you can get trains to pretty much anywhere including Liverpool and the nearby Manchester airport...The flat is just off the Princess Parkway (5103) and the M602 so very convenient for car drivers too...
Manchester, like any big city, has its fair share of crime, but having lived most of my life here I have to say it's not too bad. The flat is in an area that I consider to be pretty safe and the people that live here tend to be pretty mellow, left-wing & down to earth. There is street parking but only with a guest permit-please ask! (take out valuables and leave your glove box open to show that it's empty as you would in any big city!..)
I can't promise you a hotel, but I can promise you that you'll be made to feel very welcome! I've done my best to make the room as nice as I can make it & tried to think of everything to make for a comfortable stay. Having been a touring musician for over a decade & a host for many years on other networks, I believe I know a thing or two about home comforts..but if there's anything you need, do please ask, and if I can help, I will.
Unfortunately, as it's on the second floor, without a lift, the flat isn't suitable for people with mobility difficulties. In general I'd prefer to host quiet people - up to two guests as there is only one bathroom/toilet!.. Please don't book the room for a party weekend/night: sorry but that's not going to work for anyone! It's a quiet flat & best suited to peaceful plans! Vegetarian and vegan guests and fellow musicians and artists of all kinds are, of course, very welcome!...but whoever you are & whatever you do I hope to make you feel at home!
NOTE: please read!
One last thing: I'm unable to accept reservations very far in advance as I'd much prefer to be here to welcome you & often don't know my plans ahead of time. Sorry if this is inconvenient! The upside is that I'm usually happy to welcome guests who are 'caught short' or need a place at short notice! I also much prefer guests to stay a minimum of two nights, especially at weekends.
Try me & I'll see what I can do to accommodate you.
Interaction with Guests
I'm happy to interact with guests if that's what you'd like and if I'm not too busy working when you're around. I'll generally make some kind of breakfast to share & am happy to give you some ideas for places to visit / eat etc.
Other Things to Note
IMPORTANT: Please note! I am unable to accept booking requests any more than a couple of weeks in advance due to the nature of my touring work & commitments. I need to be there to let you in & also to ensure high standards are kept up! ; ) if you'd like to stay, please do get in touch but be aware that I can't give you a yes very far in advance! I really want to make sure your stay is a happy one!
The kitchen is vegan / vegetarian (which includes bringing in takeaway foods!) & I'd be very grateful to you for your respect of this. The flat is non-smoking but there is a balcony.
Kirsty is a very lovely, welcoming, polite and helpful host. Even though she said she was very busy the weekend we arrived, the first evening she showed us the city and took us to a very nice bar. Kirsty was very interested in what we we’re doing in our daily life and is a very nice person to have a conversation with.
In the apartment we we’re allowed to use the kitchen. We could take coffee if we wanted, use things for breakfast if we wanted etc. The room where we were sleeping, was really nice! With a soft mattress and fresh cotton it wasn’t hard to fall asleep. On Sunday morning she prepared an amazing fruit breakfast for us!
The apartment is on a walk distance of the city (10-15 minutes). So you don’t have to use the public transport if you want to go to the city for a drink (or something else of course).
We were glad we could stay at Kirsty’s home and would recommend her to anyone!
Kirsty made me very welcome and provided lovely food. The accommodation was comfortable and very quiet.
Thank you, Kirsty. I really felt at home at your place immediately. I can recommend your lovely arranged and clean flat and yourself as a caring and very friendly host. (And of course your new vintage record player. So I was able to listen to your band's great record and also to one from Michael Jackson. OFF THE WALL: "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough...". Actually looking back, my stay seems to have been lasting only for the length of these records while I was surely enjoying my days in Manchester.) A definite recommendation.
A wonderful place and a wonderful host. Kirsty's flat is lovingly furnished with a mixture of contempory and vintage stylings and has such a lovely ambience that I immediately felt at home on arrival. Kirsty was the perfect host; warm, welcoming and engaging and nothing seemed too much trouble. I can't recommend her flat highly enough and if you're looking for somewhere peaceful but with great city and transport links, you won't find anywhere better.
Kirsty is a wonderful host. She was very helpful and went above and beyond in her welcome and hospitality during my stay. Her flat is at a great location for sightseeing in Manchester. It is also beautifully decorated and very comfortable -- I felt right at home upon arrival. I also really enjoyed getting to know Kirsty as she is so lovely and wonderful to talk to. I had a great experience!
Kirsty was a lovely host. Booking was simple, communication easy, and driving directions were precise. Invited warmly into a darling flat in a quiet but conveniently located neighborhood, we felt instantly welcomed by our hostess. Extremely helpful with recommendations for sightseeing in Manchester and the region, our hostess even walked us into town and pointed out many personal favorites and local gems. We had a delightful time in this lovely flat with such a fun and gracious hostess.
Kirsty was an amazing host - really helpful. The flat is suitated near to the city center and it is really clean and nice. We do enjoyed our stay!
