About this listing
An artist-owned green oasis with good connections just fifteen minutes from the city centre. A warm, quiet and comfortable flat with a balcony, that looks out onto trees and blends quirky old furniture with a minimalist design ethic. Kitchen is vegetarian / vegan. **cat**
A calm oasis owned by a musician & just minutes away from the bustling city. Sleep in a comfortable bed and enjoy waking up to birdsong and good coffee on the small balcony. Read, eat, rest, explore, make yourself at home.
NB I have recently taken in a beautiful cat so please be sure that you're happy having a cat around & have advised any other friends who will be coming with you!
NB: Please read note at end before sending a request!
You'll be staying on the top (second) floor of a low-rise, late 1940s block containing just three flats. Double glazing and central heating has been installed in all of the flats. I have also put in laminate flooring & the flat's decorated in pale colours / white.
The flat has two bedrooms, a small kitchen, bathroom, an office / third bedroom (used as storage: not available for rent) and a large and sunlit living room. Due to the fact it's from the 1940s, the flats have a slightly deco feel to them and if you look out along the road from the balcony you'll see that they're set at a gentle curve.
The windows are big & light comes into the bedrooms in the morning and onto the 'living space' and balcony in the afternoon. If you're lucky enough to be here when the sun is shining, at around 3pm the living room is flooded with light!
Remember though, this is Manchester...
The bath is small but there is a shower, plentiful scalding-hot water, bubble bath and fresh towels! ; )
The guest room has a comfortable Natural Bed Company wooden bed frame with memory foam mattress & pillows. There is a locker, a beautiful old chest of drawers & an old school desk. Hooks for coats are behind the door.
Outside, you'll see that there are many green spaces in the immediate vicinity: it's fun to watch the squirrels leaping from tree to tree and there is a community garden two streets down and a community garden centre two minutes' walk away. Should you need to stretch your legs, Hulme park is a hop, skip and jump from here and the Manchester Aquatics Centre and Moss Side Leisure Centre are both within easy walking distance.
You'll find the nearest supermarket, a huge Asda, at 8-10 minutes' walk away and you'll be a minute or so from a small row of shops including a post office, takeaway, chemist, Co op and grocery stores. There's a health food shop & vegetarian cafe about 12-15 mins away on Oxford Road (On the 8th Day) and you'll find a wonderful vegan, sugar-free grocery store called Unicorn in Chorlton, about 10 minutes away by car.
For more up-market vegetarian eating I highly recommend visiting Bistro 1847 , The Allotment in Stockport & Greens in Didsbury & For more basic Indian home-cooking, try the Yadgar in the hip Northern Quarter or the phenomenal Indian Tiffin Room rather than chancing Rusholme, Manchester's 'curry mile'...
If you're after gluten free pizza, Dough in Northern Quarter is excellent. V Revolution sells vegan junk food and punk records...and for a real treat, there's a sit-in chocolatier called Bon Bon near Manchester Craft Centre that sells exquisite hot chocolate.
Whilst you're here, you will probably want to visit museums and buildings around the town: Might I recommend the following:
Castlefield Canal Basin (huge columns, mazes of bridges & canal boats. The pubs can be a bit busy if the sun's out but it's actually a nice place for a stroll at night when all the city lights reflect in the canals.
Museum of Science and Technology (clacking machines and a hall full of old aeroplanes)
John Rylands Library / Portico Library
There are several art galleries in the city, a regular museum and numerous places to see theatre and entertainment of all descriptions...Areas of town to discover include the gay village (Canal Street), Chinatown and the Northern Quarter. From the flat it would take you around 15 minutes to walk into the centre of town. Manchester's a very flat city if you're a cyclist, and you're around 12 minutes' walk from the nearest train station, Oxford Road, where you can get trains to pretty much anywhere including Liverpool and the nearby Manchester airport...The flat is just off the Princess Parkway (5103), A56 and the M602 so very convenient for car drivers too...
Manchester, like any big city, has its fair share of crime, but having lived most of my life here I have to say it's not too bad. The flat is in an area that I consider to be pretty safe and the people that live here tend to be pretty mellow, left-wing & down to earth. There is street parking but only with a guest permit so be advised you'll need to find an off-road place on the street or another place for your car (take out valuables and leave your glove box open to show that it's empty as you would in any big city!..)
I can't promise you a hotel, but I can promise you that you'll be made to feel very welcome! I've done my best to make the flat as nice as I can make it & tried to think of everything to make for a comfortable stay. Having been a touring musician for over a decade & a host for many years on other networks, I believe I know a thing or two about home comforts..but if there's anything you need, do please ask me or the friend who is your contact for the rental, and if we can help, we will.
Unfortunately, as it's on the second floor, without a lift, the flat isn't suitable for people with mobility difficulties. I'd prefer to host quiet people - up to two guests (or up to four when it's rented as a whole flat) as there is only one bathroom/toilet!..
Please don't book the room for a party weekend/night: sorry but that's not going to work for anyone! It's a quiet flat with neighbours & best suited to peaceful plans! The kitchen is vegan / vegetarian (including takeaway) & I'd be very grateful to you if you would respect that. I have deliberately listed the space as a vegan flat so as to avoid having meat or fish in the house. If you have any allergies do let me know in advance!
Vegetarian and vegan guests and fellow musicians and artists of all kinds are, of course, very welcome!...I hope to make you feel at home!
NOTE: please read!
One last thing: I'm unable to accept reservations very far in advance as I'd much prefer to be here to welcome you & often don't know my plans ahead of time. Sorry if this is inconvenient! The upside is that I'm usually happy to welcome guests who are 'caught short' or need a place at short notice! I also much prefer guests to stay a minimum of two nights, especially at weekends.
Sometimes (rarely) the flat will be available as an entire space.
Try me & I'll see what I can do to accommodate you.
Tucked behind the front door of this late 1940s top floor flat, the guest room is newly decorated (August 2015) & you will have access to a small shared bathroom with plenty of hot water for bathing and a shower. Clean towels are provided.
The best wifi signal is in the sitting room where you're welcome to hang out. Network is Ric Wi Fi DC 1 Password is ricwifidc1
The guest room is equipped with an iron, ironing board, hairdryer & kettle.
Access to the kitchen is also available but guests are reminded that the flat is vegan (pure vegetarian). Tea, coffee & breakfast & extra bedding are all available.
Local info is in the top drawer of the wooden chest!
When the flat is rented as a whole, you will also have access to my room (a very comfortable bed!)
Interaction with guests
I'm happy to interact with guests if that's what you'd like and if I'm not too busy working when you're around. When I'm here I'll generally make some kind of breakfast - when I'm not, cereals & soya milk will be available for you as well as pods for the coffee machine (remember to fill up the water behind, empty the water tray underneath each time & empty the old pods!) happy to give you some ideas for places to visit / eat etc.
Other things to note
IMPORTANT: Please note! I am unable to accept booking requests any more than a couple of weeks in advance due to the nature of my touring work & commitments. I need to be there to let you in & also to ensure high standards are kept up! ; ) if you'd like to stay, please do get in touch but be aware that I can't give you a yes very far in advance! I really want to make sure your stay is a happy one!
The kitchen is vegan / vegetarian (which includes bringing in takeaway foods!) & I'd be very grateful to you for your respect of this. The flat is non-smoking but there is a balcony. No parties or heavy drinking allowed - sorry! Please make sure you clean up after yourselves & if you have time, we'd be grateful if you could leave the bedsheets & towels in the basket provided!
