The space

House now available long term only from January 2016. Minimum stay of one month, cheaper rates the longer you stay! (Please contact me to discuss) Bills (electric, internet etc) and cleaning not included, though I can help you arrange these.

Our cozy wooden house in the rice fields has an amazing uninterrupted view to Mount Agung. You can get up early and watch the sunrise over the volcano and the mists in the rice fields from the balcony - magical!

There are 2 bedrooms, each with a double bed and mosquito nets, and 2 living areas, over 2 floors- ideal for up to 4 people with an additional travel cot for a child if required. There is an open-air (covered) kitchen, which is lovely for sitting in and enjoying your breakfast in the rice field breezes. The bathroom is located to the side of the main house across a covered corridor and has hot water and includes a bathtub and separate shower. The toilet is separate from the main bathroom.

We built this home for our own family and we want you to enjoy staying there as if it was your own home. We've included everything you may need during your stay in Ubud. The kitchen is equipped with a gas hob, fridge, toaster oven, rice cooker, plates, cutlery and cooking equipment. In the living room is a TV, dvd player and a selection of books and DVDs.

The gazebo in our walled garden is perfect for relaxing in and there is ample parking space behind a lockable gate (we are located on a road with full car access, unlike many Ubud villas which can only be accessed by motorbike).

There is a lovely walk through the rice fields into Ubud which takes about half an hour. We're located about 2km away from the Yoga Barn so this is ideal if you're planning on taking some yoga classes while in Ubud. I can also supply a yoga mat on request and our upstairs living area is ideal for practicing at the house.

Just down the road is a lovely Indonesian restaurant (Sawah Indah) which is perfect for dinner if you don't feel like going into Ubud. We're also within a few minutes walk of Bebek Tepi Sawah, Bale Udang, Warung Hana, and Janggar Ulam restaurants - search for them online to see how gorgeous they are and how yummy the food looks! If you just feel like a night in, many restaurants in Ubud deliver free of charge and we keep takeaway menus in the house for your use.

We provide bed linens and towels and we also have a filter for making unlimited drinking water.

The neighborhood

Our house is located in a small village on the outskirts of Ubud with lots of families and a community feel. We're blessed with beautiful rice field views but still very close to the centre of Ubud. As this is mainly a local area there are lots of great restaurants around with good local food at reasonable prices.

Getting around

Getting around by motorbike is the easiest option in Ubud and you can rent a motorbike or scooter for around 50k rp per day. It's also possible to catch a local bus "bemo" from the main road into town. Taxis (private cars) are easily available from asking at Sawah indah restaurant or on the main road.

Walking into Ubud is possible either via the rice fields (highly recommended) or the road (busy traffic but a quicker way to reach the yoga barn and south end of Ubud) - it takes about 30-40 minutes to walk in, depending on where you want to be. If you're planning to walk, I'd advise leaving either early morning or late afternoon as it can get very hot during the day.

We also provide a transport service to anywhere you need. Prices are in the house manual or ask me for a specific destination. We offer airport pickup for 350,000rp

The house has full car access and secure car parking.

Other things to note

Please think of our house as a rustic tropical countryside cottage - it's not a 5* luxury villa so if this is what you're looking for, this might not be the place for you. Most of our guests love the peace and quiet, simple lifestyle and closeness to nature.

The house is not completely sealed to allow the breeze to circulate. While this means it stays cool, it also sometimes allows rain to blow in during heavy storms and sometimes insects to get in. We have waterproofed as much as possible and provide mosquito nets but the tradeoff for having a beautiful wooden house means that sometimes we have to deal with a couple of leaks around windows and doors in rainy season!

House Rules
No smoking
No parties or events
Check in is anytime after 2PM

As we built this house as our family home, we expect our guests to treat it with respect as if it was their own. As we live in a quiet residential area and sound travels easily over the rice fields we ask that guests don't play loud music or have wild parties late at night!

Smoking only outside the house please. As the grass roofing material is highly flammable, no cigarettes, candles, incense or mosquito coils are permitted inside the house or on the balcony. The kitchen and gazebo are both lovely breezy places to sit if you wish to smoke. Please make sure cigarettes are extinguished in a suitable ashtray!

Our family had a wonderful experience here. You can't get a more beautiful view than the rice fields in the backyard. Our two daughters made friends with the three kittens and didn't want to leave. We loved the simplicity of this home too. Very basic and perfect for our needs. Great value for your money. Rachel was wonderful and responsive with communication and Made checked us in with no problems. We loved the path through the rice fields into Ubud most! Gorgeous and scenic with every step. Thank you for a wonderful experience, Rachel and Made. Aloha... until next time.

We stayed 4 nights in this house, the garden was really nice however the house was not clean enough. Indeed, both beds had a lot of bed bugs and spiders. Pillows had moisture and blanket was smelly. Each morning we were counting bites from insects. The bathtub was very dirty so we couldn't use it. The kitchen was outside the house so everything was exposed to lezards, spiders and dust. The tour proposed by the host was overpriced compared to what we can find by ourself. We are dispointed and hope the host can make the necessary improvement as it can be a really nice place to stay.

Response from Rachel:
very serious accusation to say we have bed bugs! This is untrue and the house was cleaned and prepared with fresh laundry. Shady tactics to try and get a free stay after checking out!

Rachel and Made's home is exactly as described so read the description carefully. The bathroom and kitchen are separate but close to the house itself, like one step away for both but it means no running water is located INSIDE the house. We didn't feel very secure with that setup as we were a group of females and the compound itself is easily accessible from the outside. I can't comment on the walk through the rice fields as it rained several times during our trip so walking, or riding if you were so inclined, wasn't possible. The guidebook left by the hosts is very helpful and I personally recommend both Warung Hana and Sawah Indah as great restaurants in the area. Overall the place is perfect for a group of 3-4 friends, couples or a family.

We stayed two months in Rachel's villa and it was definitely a great experience! The house is located outside Ubud, next to beautiful rice fields. The walk to Ubud through the rice fields is absolutely stunning but in my opinion, renting a motorbike is a must if you stay more than a few days. The garden is very green and beautiful. Sitting in the gazebo, reading, meditating or eating is a great way to unwind after visiting busy Ubud. Having breakfast on the balcony while watching the sun rising on the rice fields and volcanoes was the best way to start our days, we won't forget these moments. The kitchen is ok for basic cooking (we bought a few accessories to have more cooking possibilities). As it's an open kitchen, it's difficult to use if it's raining and if it's too windy but it happened twice during our stay (we left at the beginning of rain season). The neighborhood is growing and there are several houses being under construction so it's quite noisy during the day. This wasn't a big issue as we don't sleep late, and Rachel had told us about this issue before we booked the house. During the night, you hear a lot of animals (from geckos to dogs) but you're in Bali :-) We had issues with the rain as water started leaking through the walls and roof during two huge storms with heavy wind. The internet connection is a cellular 4G modem, therefore the connexion speed and reliability may vary but in general it's ok to check your emails and social media but if you want to work you should consider one of Ubud's coworking spaces. We really liked our stay at Rachel's villa and recommend it if you want to escape from Ubud's busy center and be close to nature!

Rachel and Made are very friendly, and helpful with local information. The house is really nice with great views and a stunning garden. If anything the pictures do not do the wood house and garden justice

I'm from the UK but have been living in Bali since 2009. My husband is Balinese, we have 2 children and live in a traditional family compound near Ubud.
