The Neighborhood

The Castro is a neighborhood of economic success that brings in capital all year round with many events catered to the gay community along with everyday business.

The Castro is a “thriving marketplace for all things gay” meaning there are gay cafes, gay theatres, gay shopping malls, and all other possible amenities with the word “gay” placed before it to make it a specialty establishment aimed at gay consumers. These establishments make the Castro an area of high spending and lead to high tourist traffic. Local residents to the area are not the only people who frequent the streets of the Castro. People travel from outside the city to visit the shops and restaurants as well as the events that take place such as the Castro Street Fair. Travelers make the trek from all over to experience this annual event and though it is advertised as LGBT, that does not stop heterosexual people from attending and partaking in the festivities. Events such as the Castro Street Fair drum up business for the community and bring in people from all over the world who visit solely for the atmosphere the Castro offers.

Getting around

MUNI subway is a 5 min walk.

  • The apartment was perfect! The location was great and we walked and walked all over the city! Although the apartment was in a quiet, pretty neighbourhood, restaurants, coffee shops, transit and shopping were all very close by. Jan was a great host and we were provided with absolutely everything we needed!

  • Had a great stay at Jan's place for a long weekend. My flight was 5 hours delayed getting there. I kept her appraised of my delay, and she and Michelle greeted me when I arrived. They couldn't have been better hosts. The apartment is beautiful and looks like it was gut renovated yesterday. It's immaculate. And exactly perfect for a short stay. It's a small space, but totally fantastic for one. I'm sure two people would be fine, but might be potentially slightly cramped. Note that the bed is full-sized and not a queen, so if you're tall like me, it might be slightly short, but it's fine enough for a few days. Jan is a great texter, and it was super easy to get a few minor questions answered during the weekend. I loved having the great little kitchen and it was fun to have a roaring fireplace if it got chilly outside at night. There are amenities galore in the apartment (great, gigantic TV, microwave, full sized oven, quality furnishings, etc.). You'll have a great time, and of course, the location is spectacular and the house quiet. Stay here. Have fun! And thanks again.

  • Very nice place! Great location, but very quiet street. Metro is very close, as well as parks, restaurants and clubs. It was great stay.
Internet was pretty slow, that's probably the only imperfection I can mention.

  • Jan's place was great for my weekend getaway and I'm sure it would be great for a longer stay as well. Amazing location in the heart of Castro and nearby to so many fun bars, restaurants, parks and other awesome neighborhoods.

Jan is a great host if you have a question or need suggestions on what to do/where to go but other than that she completely lets you enjoy your time in San Francisco. I would definitely stay here again!

  • Great place! Perfect for a family visitor. Highly recommend!!!! We will certainly use this property again.

  • Immaculately clean and well-appointed, Jan's studio couldn't be more convenient and quiet. I was there for a week and was constantly surprised by the little touches. The bed is very comfortable with lots of cushy pillows. The private garden is a nice respite from the fast-pace of the city. Ideal for one or possibly two people.

  • Jan's place is in such a fantastic location!!! Awesome, walkable neighbourhood with restaurants and bars REALLY close by. The studio is on a quiet street just tucked behind all the action. We felt really safe walking back after some late dinners. Cable cars and MUNI subway is 5 min away and check out Castro coffee for the best jump start to your day. The studio itself was spotless and really nicely designed. Only drawback I'd say is that the bed is a double and not a queen but we made it work. Fortunately it's really comfortable! Jan was easy to get a hold of and always responded quickly. She also provided some really great tips for transportation and area hot spots. We loved San Francisco and would totally stay here again. Thanks Jan!

  • We had a wonderful stay in the Studio. It provided the cleanliness and luxury of a hotel, with all the comforts of home. I appreciated how environmentally friendly it was (a common theme in San Francisco), with dimmers on the lights, and a fireplace for cold winter nights. The location was ideal, on a quiet street in the Castro, very close to restaurants, bars, and shops. There were maps and information about the city in the Studio, and plenty to see and do in the immediate vicinity. Jan was a lovely host, friendly, attentive to our needs, with speedy communication. I would definitely book the Studio again for our next stay in the city. The experience would not have been better. Highly recommended! Thank you Jan, for contributing to such a great time in San Francisco.

  • Perfect little place in the Castro. Quiet and secluded but close to all shops/bars and muni. I will come again ...

  • I could not have asked for a more perfect stay. I visit SF often, but never stayed in Castro due to the lack of hotels. I finally made it a reality and booked my room with Jan. This studio has everything you can possibly need. There is so much attention to detail and once you stay you realize how thoughtful Jan was while setting this room up for visitors. The room and every part of it was spotless and modern. Jan met us outside and was super welcoming. We entered through the garden and immediately felt submersed in a peaceful environment. Being one block away from the Castro commercial area makes this room perfect for a morning walk for coffee or a night out to the social scene in The Castro. I will most definitely make my way back to Jan's place!!

About
I've lived in the Castro for 26 years and love it! The house is centrally located in the Castro district of San Francisco in the Castro village (flat ground no hills). It has a "walk score" of 100 out of 100! and transportation score of 98 out of 100. Within 1/2 block of fantastic restaurants, shops, clubs and bars! Dolores Park, Duboce Park, Castro movie theater are less than 5 minutes away. Yet, in the middle of all this action, I live on a very quiet tree lined street. I grew up in Honolulu and have traveled extensively to Costa Rica, Puerto Vallarta, British Virgin Islands, St Barths, Berlin, Munich, Braunschweig, Germany, Tuscany Italy, and London. I lived in Sydney Australia for a couple of years. Worked in Braunschweig Germany for two and a half years. I love to travel and meet new people and experience different cultures. I don't offer just a place to sleep but a friendly, quiet, warm environment where you can relax after long hours of sightseeing, sip a glass of wine in the beautiful garden or just soak up the sun.
