About this listing
The converted garage has salvaged gym floor (fromPCC) that add color and light. There are 3 skylights so an abundance of natural light fill the place. There is a loft to sleep in and another small couch that pulls out as a single bed. There is a full kitchen but the only oven is a toaster oven. The bathroom is large and has a stackable washer dryer in it. There are chickens in the backyard so always fresh eggs to eat and I will leave basic necessities (such as coffee and cream) out there.
You'll enter through a set of carriage doors to my backyard. The entrance is separate but the backyard is shared with me and my 2 girls. There is a garden you're welcome to eat from and a nice sitting spot. The neighborhood is very nice and convenient. There is a Whole Foods and New Seasons within walking distance. I am between the Mississippi, Alberta and Williams neighborhoods. I'm 2 miles from downtown and the bus is very close. There are functioning bikes you can use although they are not in tip top shape.
The place is made from mostly salvaged material. There are many crazy neat light fixtures and a curved church window from a church that was demolished. There is lots of privacy but you might hear chickens or a far away train.
The Hen House and the backyard
Fun and quiet neighborhood but you can walk to a bar or a really good restaurant within minutes.
Please park on the street there ate plenty of spots.
Other Things to Note
Check-out at 11 and check-in at 2. I'm flexible unless its back to back bookings. Feel free to ask!
Smokers can smoke outside. I'll leave breakfast stuff in unit but you need to cook it! Be respectful and nice.
We LOVED staying at The Hen House. Norah is a very welcoming host, always offering us anything we might need and checking in with us about how our stay was going. She is very easygoing and helpful. The neighborhood is quiet and great for walks with our dog. This was the perfect place to stay for eight nights on the first half of our trip to find a place to live in Portland. I wish we could have stayed longer! We'll definitely be back and recommend the place to visiting family and friends.
Another great visit to the Hen House and Portland. Norah once again made us feel very welcome, and our daughter had a great time playing with Norah's daughters (and the tortoise!)
As people who prefer to get around on our bikes, the location is even more convenient than last year with the improved bike lanes on Williams and elsewhere - we only got into our car to for day-trips out of town.
Norah accommodated us on very short notice. The place is cool and private and even has ac, which was great in the hot weather. Norah made sure we have everything we need and even shared some oysters with us. The neighbourhood is quite but not far from fun.
The Hen House was a cozy, private place that was clean and easily accessible. The parking was really easy and the neighborhood was nice. Norah did a great job communicating with us and answering all of our questions. Great place to stay and perfect for first timers like us.
This is a great place to stay in Portland and Norah was a wonderful host. We stayed here for a month while we were looking for an apartment as we had just moved from California. Norah was so cool and friendly to talk to we ran into her a few times in passing. The place is relatively private, all the windows have shades and you are not bothered (unless trains and chicken noises bother you, they are quite charming to me).
Location was great, a short under 10 minute walk to a Whole Foods, a nice vintage store on Fremont and lots of good places on Alberta St. I work downtown and it was a very simple bus ride for me every morning.
The place is small but comfortable.. we had three there and 2 of us slept in the loft bed and the other one slept on the pull out couch, all comfortably. The kitchen had everything we needed and we loved having a washer and dryer. Norah was quick to respond to any questions or any additional items we needed while we were there.
All in all I will definitely be recommending Norah's place to stay for my friends and family that come to visit me!
Great place! The Hen House is in a quiet residential neighborhood. This cozy self-contained building has plenty of privacy and space. The kitchen was well-stocked for breakfast options, including fresh eggs from the chickens right next door (!). We didn't meet Norah until we were about to leave in the morning, but she was incredibly friendly, full of great advice about the Oregon coast (where we were headed next), and seems like she'd be fun to hang out with. Tortoise and cat also fun and friendly. The Hen House would be a great introduction to the city for anyone who's never been before.
Norah was a great host - very friendly, communicative, and welcoming, but also respectful of my privacy.
The Hen House was a great home base for a few days while my pup and I explored Portland. It was a good-sized place for 1-3 people who are comfortable with each other. The place was clean and smelled good and Norah provided fruit, yogurt, eggs, bread, coffee and tea. The couch was comfy for reading and having air conditioning and a ceiling fan were bonuses! It was also nice to have a washer and dryer in the unit and I liked waking up to the sounds of the chickens clucking in the backyard. Be aware that the main bed is a loft and the stairs to it are rather steep in the event a guest has any mobility issues.
The location was good, quiet and residential, but only about a 15 minute walk from Alberta Street, parks, and an easy drive to many other great neighborhoods.
I enjoyed my time at the Hen House and would definitely stay here again!
