Atelier was inspired by painting holidays in France. It is a spacious studio at Hylands providing a base for escape, rest and adventure. It is cosy with a wood burner, uses high quality materials throughout, curated with love and care. Surrounded by beautiful gardens to explore, where you can dine al fresco or just sit and watch the wildlife and the ever changing views.
It is 12 minutes walk to Kendal's many independent shops and restaurants, and 5 minutes to our local pub, the 'Riflemans Arms'
The space
You will arrive at Atelier at Hylands up a wooded driveway, passing a large sculpture of a stag and a dragon. Once parked up at the top of the drive you see and can enter the porch which is filled with plants, a place to shed the wettest of layers before entering the main studio space.
The main space is 5x5m so is generously proportioned with high ceilings. We hope that as you enter, your shoulders will relax and you will know you are somewhere special, designed to help you rest and unwind.
The kitchenette is made from our oak trees, and is a modest space for simple cooking, with a two ring induction hob, a microwave, a Ninja multi cooker and a small silent fridge. There is plenty of cooking equipment if the mood takes you.
The wood burning stove burns very hot. You can help yourself to wood from the woodshed next to the porch.
The dining table is lit from a beautiful amber chandelier. The lighting in the studio is flexible to enable different moods.
The French style king sized bed is luxurious, made up with feather bedding and 100% linen covers and Egyptian cotton sheets.
The hallway space to the shower room doubles as a walk-in wardrobe where there is plenty of hanging space.
The shower room is newly refurbished, so is fresh and clean. A hot towel rail will keep the towels nice and warm and in the shower you will find a stone seat. A detail we’ve been wanting to build in somewhere at Hylands. We hope you will enjoy it.

The Atelier is your private space.
The meadow and wood to the back of the house are shared with us and other guests and can be used for quiet sitting or a rustic BBQ or camp fire. Also shared is our new wild life pond, do sit around it, it gets the best of the evening sunshine. But do take care not to get too close to the water!
We built the pond on a former grass tennis court in 2023.
Other things to note
We also have La'al Yam, Apple House and Tethera Nook here at Hylands. These are also on Airbnb.
If you enjoy your stay do come back with other friends and family.
The gardens are open for charity as part of the Nation Garden Scheme (NGS) on two days each year. We have other gardening groups visit a few times a year.
From time to time to time we run gardening and painting workshops. We would let you know (invite you to join in) if an event was planned during your stay.
