A FEW WISE AND USEFUL ADVICES HERE FOR ALL OUR GUESTS:
[apologies for caps!]
GETTING HERE: FROM & TO THE AIRPORT (OR from-to ANY PLACE IN BALI…)
allows you a smooth arrival; he HAS THE KEYS! — He has our PRIVATE NR — he knows all the short cuts -
We ADVISE to book with him, whether you arrive in the DAY TIME or SPECIALLY if you ARRIVE LATER than 4PM (our Staff is then OFF) —
— AirBNB Hosting does NOT offer services like a regular Hotel: NO RECEPTION OPEN 24/7! -- Our staff have a Schedule and days OFF to be respected and honoured! --
— PLEASE NOTE:
1/ BALI does NOT have STREET NAMES at every junction! —
2/ HOUSES SELDOM HAVE CLEAR & VISIBLE NUMBERS! —
3/ EVEN & ODD NUMBERS (LIKE IN WESTERN COUNTRIES) ARE NOT A CONCERN HERE! SOME STREETS SHOW TWICE THE SAME NUMBER! OR Nr 24 will be followed by Nr 103 ! —
4/ LATE ARRIVALS MIGHT FIND NO STREET LAMPS WORKING PROPERLY & A DESERTED AREA WITH NO-ONE TO HELP -- OR PEOPLE WHO NEVER HEARD ABOUT THE PLACE! —
5/ CELL PHONE SIGNAL AND INTERNET CAN BE 'PATCHY' AND UNRELIABLE (this is Bali!) - WE APOLOGISE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO GUARANTY AN ANSWER TO SMS, CALLS OR EMAILS PAST 8PM —
6/ A DRIVER found in Denpasar, Kuta or Seminyak - MIGHT BE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE PLACE, TAKING YOU UP AND DOWN THE ROAD IN VAIN (experienced by one Guest who said: “Cheap deal with a Driver found in Kuta turned out to be a "cheat deal” ! It was well past 11Pm and he proved to be unable to locate the house and drop us safely!"
-- 7/ OWNER & Employees DO NOT LIVE ON-SITE — therefore, for OBVIOUS SAFETY REASONS, WILL NOT give to an unknown driver INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE KEYS..
—) FOR ALL THESE REASONS WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND OUR DEAR GUESTS to rather travel with OUR OWN DRIVER. A SAFE, RELIABLE & SMOOTH WAY TO ARRIVE. HE KNOWS THE ADDRESS! HE HAS THE KEYS! HE HAS OUR PRIVATE NUMBER. HIS FEE is THE SAME as ANY OTHER DRIVER (29USD = 350,000RP from Airport to Ubud, paid directly to him). -- PLEASE contact us AHEAD OF TIME to ARRANGE YOUR TRANSFER --
OUR ADDRESS = JALAN SUWETA, KM 2 - Rumah Pak KARTA - Banjar SHAKTI-BENTUYUNG – UBUD - 80571 GIANYAR REGENCY - BALI -- INDONESIA --
— DIRECTIONS, Distances, LANDMARKS (given with CARDINAL DIRECTIONS as used by ALL BALINESE PEOPLE):
— Our LANE is marked by a LARGE VISIBLE SIGN with our LOGO: a BIRD & a HEART (Black & White) on the RIGHT side (East) of SUWETA Street —
— LANDMARKS & DISTANCES = EXACTLY TWO KM from the UBUD ROYAL PALACE - AT KILOMETRE 2: You will reach "WAPA DI UME RESORT" Large place on your LEFT HAND side, YELLOW WALLS, WELL MARKED and known by all locals — keep going 200 Meters more North, past "KUDOS HOMESTAY”: OUR LOGO is quite visible on the OPPOSITE SIDE of Jalan Suweta ( another landmark is "PAULA'S CAFE”, opposite side of street, 800M North, so you’ll know you went too far!) --
Enter the cemented LANE marked by the LOGO BIRD AND HEART -- WALK UNTIL THE VERY END, TO THE LAST HOUSE =
''SHAKTI" is marked by a SIGN POINTING AT IT —

Our main and only rule is...... "MINDFULNESS IS HAPPINESS"......
Yet, experience being a teacher … we have to set up a few points here, PLEASE READ carefully ….:
— COMPULSORY UPON ARRIVAL: Police declaration for ALL foreigners requires a HARD COPY of your passport
- SPRING MINERAL WATER, 20L JUG: 25.000RP (2USD) — or bring your own Bottle (yet, more plastic to dispose of, and 1Liter costs about 4.000Rp in any shop!) —
— LOST KEYS are charged 20USD
MINDFULNESS - is about RESPECT and CONSIDERATION of OTHERS and of the ENVIRONMENT --
Please share our ECO-FRIENDLY approach:
— Switch OFF LIGHTS AND FANS before going out !
— Be conservative with your use of WATER, a very precious resource here. --
— SMOKING allowed OUTSIDE only. Please dispose your cigarettes in an ashtray, thank you--
KEEP YOUR VALUABLES inside the CABINET, rather than in plain sight - (we feel this goes without saying, but would like to mention it anyway).
— Bring a FLASH LIGHT with you if you will be coming or going after dark. --
— BABIES and children: MUST be fitted with nappies at all times. Besides: we request PARENTS to bring a RUBBER SHEET to protect the mattress - This is meant to prevent any annoying issues due to the risk of soiling the bedding.
— OUR BEDDINGS are in very good state. STAINED Mattress, Pillows or cushions will be charged accordingly.
— sorry, NO EXTRA GUESTS are allowed in the House UNLESS requested by you IN WRITTEN, ahead of time.
— "MINI BAR” : SNACKS and DRINKS (provided in your fridge) pls leave yr payment in the Kitchen (for our House Keeper) Thank you.
— BREAKFAST: Provided by us consists of : Two varieties of TEAS, Bali grown Coffee, Creamer, Sugar, Cereal Mix portions, “Welcome Fruit Basket” - For any other EXTRA FOOD (Bread, butter, eggs, milk, ham, yogurt, etc) Kindly please ASK US before arrival date. Our House Keeper will do the shopping, charged at local price.
— PETS: We LOVE them. Yet We reserve the right to ALLOW them on the property. TALK to us first, TKS --
— SAFETY: OPEN FLAMES (candles, incense, oil burners..) : make sure to put them on a metal/glass plate. NEVER leave them unattended for obvious safety reasons, for yourself as well as others - also valid for the GAS COOKER.
- ELECTRICITY, Water, and Internet service: while these are all currently active in the listing, from time to time there can be a lapse in their accessibility due to the more primitive infrastructure of services on the island (remember, this is Bali!); there is nothing that can be done about a lapse in service and does NOT constitute a valid reason for cancelling with the expectation of a refund. We appreciate your understanding regarding this.
— SCOOTER RENTAL --
We recommend MR NYOMAN, a reputable company. Consider $5USD/day - UPON REQUEST, ahead of time, please, it will be delivered upon arrival, with Helmet and raincoat; payment and contract settled directly with Mr Nyoman upon delivery. BRINGING with you ALL DATA RE your HEALTH INSURANCE is obviously IMPORTANT.
— FOR ANY TRANSPORT REQUIREMENTS please let us know AHEAD OF TIME, we can help you get organised with our safe reliable local drivers (Car or “Ojek” Taxi Moto).
— Please be considerate and avoid "last Minute'' requests, Bali is on a SLOW pace, and not up to Western criteria!
— Thank you very much for caring ! -
Master's Room upstairs. Own design bedcover with local silk. Windows on three sides: East (Sunrise over the Jungle), West side (Rice paddies), North on the Jungle. High quality spring mattress resting on a teak wood platform, a most comfortable nest
Our experience was fantastic in Colonial House. It is out of town and right in he middle of the rice paddies with jungle right behind. We even heard a coconut fall which we collected and ate! I recommend that if you are going to Bali, to stay here, the experience is priceless.
A couple of things, make sure you hire a scooter, as the walk into town is fairly long, about 2 kms. Plus the experience of riding a scooter in Bali is amazing.
Also make sure you bring some DEET. There are not that many mosquitoes actually, but just around dusk you will find 2 or 3 floating around the house.
If you are looking for air conditioned comfort, this is not the house for you, but if you are looking to hear the jungle sounds during the night, and see the gekkos running through the house during the day, then this house is for you.
We had a problem with the water while we were there, and Marie the owner was right onto it and had it fixed right away.
The service by Tini the housekeeper was great, and she even bought some supplies for us like milk, bacon and yogurt, just to get us started when we arrived. (Just be sure you organise this in advance)
A great stay.
Thank you ROB for your appreciation, and fr acknowledging our efforts to give best possible service and immdiate response to any maintenance problem.
YES, our house is located between jungle and rice fields, -- and of course, one can expect nature to come inside, some visitors, ants, lizards and else, as this is not DisneyLand but Bali, a tropical country and very alive...
nice, simple & peaceful house. it felt like staying in the middle of the jungle. we enjoyed our stay a lot.
Stefan, his wife and their two lovely daughters were a pleasure to serve.
respectful and considerate people, we were happy to help you find a meal near by for the little family.
After you left, we have refurbished the house: painted / white washed the walls, repaired the damages caused by the rain, installed a OPTIC FIBER Internet system that works GREAT, added more items to the kitchen equipment and an extra fan, etc....
Come back soon ! ;- )
Felt disappointed with the Overal experience! ( Host and place! ) I've travelled trough Asia before and I know things don't always work the same in different countries but I didn't enjoy our stay! Place felt unclean and we had a lot of resident insects, lizards and frogs living inside the villa!!
And host made communication hard as we would contact through air bnb and they would reply via email or text ect so if we didn't check all possie ways of communication we assumed they didn't reply (our phone was broken)
Wouldn't recommend / stay here again which is sad! First bad review!
Mr Scott staid 3 nights at our House in Ubud, Bali - with friends, all together FIVE people.
Upon their leaving the House-Keeper found the place so messy that she called for a 2nd cleaner to help and they both spent twice more time cleaning than usual.
Besides, Mr Scott requested a pick-up service from the Airport, we organised this with our Driver, a Professional Balinese gentleman who has been working with us for over seven years, excellent communicator who CONFIRMED the service, received a positive response from Mr Scott but waited for the group for over 2 hours, in vain. They had simply taken another taxi.
The reason being that Mr Scott did not have with him the ITINERARY and HOUSE RULES sent by AIRBNB, giving our FULL DETAILS: Driver waiting for them with a large visible sign showing our logo (described), address, directions, landmarks, distances etc-
We were awakened at midnight by their call but DID nevertheless answer. We had quite a few exchanges via SMS, from our Cell to their AUSTRALIAN Nr, never heard a mere 'Sorry' . Yet the Taxi driver (probably from Denpasar and having no knowledge of UBUD) failed finding our place, yet well MARKED by a large sign on the Street.
Mr Scott and friends NEVER offered to compensate our own driver (we had to ask on his behalf) who had blocked his schedule for them, refusing other clients: a loss for a small local family business.
Last but not least, upon checked out, they took the KEYS with them... therefore creating an other issue for us and for the next Guests... We had to change the locks as the keys didnt get back to us on time.
All in all ? our first "Do not recommend" Review..... :\
We had a great stay in "Shakti". There is plenty of space, it's a beautiful open space and the perfect place to absorb the sights and sounds of Bali. You can look out over the rice paddies and jungle while you hear the faint sound of gamelan from a distant temple.
Everything was in order, the wifi worked perfectly, we had plenty of clean towels and drinking water.
The driver, Made, was very friendly and reliable. So he also comes recommended!
The house is a 30 minute walk out of Ubud, it's quite a nice (and downhill!!) walk into the village. But we definitely recommend you get a taxi back. Which is easy enough, it usually cost us about 40,000 rupiah.
When we met Marie, she was very kind and wanted to make sure that we had everything we needed.
Thank you for a great stay.
HAPPY that SHAKTI made you happy, a great space where to relax, and very close to UBUD center.
Between rice fields and Jungle, closeness to nature brings a soothing feeling, and although of course some little frogs, geckos lizards, dragonflies etc live out there and at times venture inside, thats is also what people like...
It is our pleasure to give you all infos you need to enjoy your stay and we hope to host you again, Isabel!
Shakti Villa looked exactly like it did on the pictures here.
A beautiful and uniquely decorated space where you can recharge in peace and quiet.
Of course, as Marie always say.."it's a real jungle, not jungle a la disney"
so there's always the odd insects, tiny frogs, and such.
but nothing to worry about.
bathroom is clean and spacious.
hot water runs perfectly.
wifi is quite stable (enough for radio streaming and web browsing simultaneously)
nyoman & tini were wonderful.
friendly, communicative, and very helpful.
also did the spirit journey with Marie and had a wonderful time.
THANK YOU Fransiska for your positive comments about our COLONIAL HOUSE SHAKTI -
You have actually yourself done two wonderful jobs that we much appreciated:
- A report answering our questions about the house, WIFI, etc
- a magic way of connecting with the neighbors Labrador dog, Sissi, taking her for walks and your 'dog-whispering' talents have brought a wonderful change in her life!
We highly recommend you to any future hosts...
Safe travels to your next project, Fransiska --
