The Space

The Hakuna Matata Room is the most basic of our three listings. In-room amenities include a clock radio, and a small TV connected to our aerial antenna. The TV has a built in DVD player (you can borrow DVDs from our large DVD collection) and a Roku box with access to other stations and a subscription movie service. Internet connection is through wi-fi or ethernet. Your room has a dresser with empty drawers and closet space with hangers. There is also a luggage rack and a rocking chair. The room has central heat and air as well as a ceiling fan.

If you'd like a bigger bed, please see our listing for the Wisteria Room, which has a queen sized bed, which also has a small refrigerator and microwave.

Guest Access

We have a keypad lock on our front door. You will receive your own code, so you won't need a key. Codes are deleted when guests check-out. You are free to come and go as you wish.

Guests staying in the Hakuna Matata Room will share (if other guests are staying) the adjacent hall bath with guests staying in our Wisteria Room. Often you will have the bathroom to yourself. Toiletries, a robe, fluffy cotton towels and a hair dryer are provided.

A continental breakfast of home-made muffins, breads or other pastries; juice, coffee and tea is included. Hot or cold cereal and yogurt and milk may also be served, if we have it. With advanced notice, special diets can be accommodated.

You may use our kitchen. Laundry facilities are available for a small fee to cover our costs. An iron and ironing board are available (just ask).

The room overlooks our garden, which has a gazebo, pool, and pond. You are welcome to sit on the deck or take a swim in the pool under the redwood trees. For cooler days and nights, we have an outdoor propane heater. Indoors, you can relax in the living room, where we have tourist information for the entire state and a binder of menus for local restaurants. You can play board games or watch movies on the big flatscreen hdtv in the family room. The shared space has a large screen TV with Dish satellite (with 250 channels), Roku, Netflix, and a surround sound home theater system. If you play, you are welcome to play our piano or guitars.

Interaction with Guests

How much interaction you have with us is up to you. We are happy to chat with you. If you want privacy, that's fine too.

The Neighborhood

We live in a safe suburban neighborhood near American River College. We are located 9 miles, from downtown Sacramento. We are easy to get to from all Sacramento area freeways. We are 2 minutes from the junction of Interstate 80 and the Capitol City Freeway. We are a short drive (20 minutes) from the Sacramento Airport via Interstate 5. We are five miles north of Highway 50.

Our neighborhood has established trees. We are near a creek and within walking distance of a riparian park with a bridal/hiking trail and (in the other direction) a suburban park with a community center, playground, and huge grass area with picnic tables.

Sacramento is California's state capitol. Old Sacramento, a state historic park, includes one of the nation's best railroad museums. In nearby downtown, you will find the California's History and Women's museum, and the Crocker Art Museum. Sacramento has a small zoo that specializes in wild cats. They also have red pandas. There are several municipal golf courses, including two near our home. Outdoor recreation enthusiasts can also take advantage of hiking, equestrian and biking trails in the nearby Sierra foothills and along the American River parkway; whitewater raft or kayak the Sacramento or American Rivers; or enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe, two hours to the east. To the west, is the beautiful and world-famous Napa Valley (1 hr 10 minutes), San Francisco (2 hours), and the spectacular Marin and Sonoma coastlines.

Sacramento is in the middle of the state in all directions, making it an ideal stopping place for those traveling from southern California to Oregon and Washington. We are happy to point out great places to eat nearby, or provide tourist advice for other parts of California. My husbands and I are both native Californians. We've traveled to the US, Europe, the Pacific Islands, China and South Africa. We know what travelers need and we try our best to provide it.

Getting Around

Airport Access. Our house is an easy 4 minute drive from the junction of I-80 and Business 80 freeways. We are about a 20 minute drive from Sacramento International Airport (SMF). By public transportation, it is about 90 minutes, with a connection every hour, and the last connection is at 8 pm.

Transportation to/from Downtown Sacramento: By car it is a 15 minute drive to downtown. Using public transportation, we are less than 2 miles from the Watt and I-80 light rail station, where you can catch the #1 bus to the Norris Ave. stop about 1/2 mile from our home. It takes about 45 minutes, including the 10 minute walk from the bus stop to our home. It takes between 50 minutes and an hour to get to our house from the Greyhound Station on Richards Blvd, which is north of downtown. You can also take Uber for between $11-$17. I work downtown. If it fits with my work schedule, I'm happy to pick up travelers from downtown (the Amtrack and Greyhound stops are all a short distance from my office) or from the Watt and I-80 light rail station near my house. The Megabus stop has moved from downtown. The new stop at the Q Street light rail station is a 45-minute easy bus ride (get on at the station and get off at the Pasadena Avenue and Winding Way stop that is a 4 minute walk from our house).

If you need to rent a car, there is also an Enterprise Rental Car agency open 7 am - 6 pm M-F and Saturday mornings that is an easy 1 mile walk from our house (and they will pick you up from here).

If you don't have a car, the closest restaurants within walking distance are a sandwich shop (0.8 mile), a pizza place (0.9 mile), an "American" restaurant (1.2 miles), a Denny's coffee shop (1.2 miles), a Mexican Restaurant (1.4 miles), and an excellent vegetarian restaurant (1.5 miles). Some of these restaurants, as well as other local restaurants, will deliver.

The closest large grocery store and shopping center is about 2 miles from our house. There are three different mini markets 0.8 - 0.9 miles from our house.

Other Things to Note

We want you to feel secure. We (not the bank) own our home so there is no risk your reservation will be canceled due to foreclosure or landlord issues. For your safety, every room in our home has a new, functioning carbon monoxide and smoke detector. Your room also has a keyed lock. Your room comes with a guest book that contains emergency information, including an evacuation plan. We have working fire extinguishers and a fire hydrant on our property. We are both trained in CPR and first aid. Our pool and pond are separately fenced, and there is an outside phone with emergency instructions.

Check-in time is normally 3- 6 pm. If you need an earlier or later check in, please ask. We most likely can accommodate you, though your room may not be ready for you until 6 on week days if we've had guests the night before. Check out is at 11, though if no one will be checking into the room on the day that you leave, you can check out later. You are welcome to leave your bags before or after your check in.

We have two very friendly medium sized dogs and a cat that are part of our family and live In our house. The dogs have a dog door out to their separate run, through our laundry room, so you don't need to worry about dog mess if you use our yard. We have a nice wooden pet gate in our entry hall to keep the dogs or cat from getting out or under foot while you are moving your luggage in and out. We also have pet gates (as well as the normal doors) on the bedroom doors upstairs to keep the pets (aka the cat) out of your room and off the beds if you want to leave your bedroom door open. We leave the doors open when there are no guests staying in the room for ventilation and light in the hall. You can walk through the gate (you don't have to take them off the door or step over them). There is a photo of the gates on our blog under our pets section if you would like to see what they look like. Our animals are friendly and well behaved in the house once they get over their initial excitement of meeting new people. My border collie mix (Sophie) will protect you from wolves (she's very good at it -- we've never seen one around the house), and my bassett hound mix (Colin) will sit in your lap if you let him (but don't because he is too long to fit). Our kitty (Mulan) does what she wants, mostly. She might strike up a conversation with you if she likes you.

Continental breakfast is complementary. I set it out at night (milk and other perishables are in the refrigerator). Help yourself to breakfast anytime in the morning. If you take out perishables, please return them to the refrigerator. If you would like to prepare your own meal, our kitchen is available for your use.

If you would like a full breakfast on the weekends, I am happy to prepare it for you. We normally can also prepare a bag lunch for you with advance notice. Please see our blog site at (website hidden) for selections and pricing for full breakfast and lunch. Airbnb may block the URL to the blogsite until you have made a confirmed reservation, so if you can't see it and have questions before you book, let me know. I can also make a family style prix fixe dinner or dessert for you and your group. Cost depends on what you would like to eat. Full breakfast, box lunch or dinner require 48 hrs additional notice and may not be available if I have a conflict, so please make sure and ask.

We accept cash, credit cards or Paypal for any additional charges. If you use Paypal, please designate the payment for friends and family rather than goods and services so that I am not charged a fee that I will have to recover from you. Credit charges will inclure an additional 3% to cover bank fees.

House Rules

We are here to make your stay as comfortable as possible. If you have any concerns, please let us know so that we can help.

No smoking in the house. You may smoke outside on the deck or patio.

If we have other guests staying with us, we will let you know when you check in. If so, please be respectful of them, particularly if you have a very late arrival or very early departure.

No need to make the bed when you leave. We are going to wash the sheets soon after you depart and it is easier to strip the bed if you don't make it.

If other guests are staying, please be courteous about sharing the bathroom. If you'd like to leave your toiletries in the bathroom, you are welcome to do so in one of the drawers in the bathroom vanity.

Please keep the front door closed at all times (except when you are going through it), so the cat and dogs don't get out to the street--even if they beg. The cat is an indoor only kitty. Please keep the door or screen door to the yard closed to keep the cat in. Please do not feed the dogs or cat table scraps. They don't beg during meals and we want to keep it that way. If you want to give them one treat, there is a jar of dog cookies on top of the file cabinet in the family room. Tell the dogs to sit when you give them a treat. They will. Sophie is always gentle taking treats, but you have to remind Colin to be "Gentle." The cat is finicky and often doesn't like the kitty treats; you can try, but chances are the dogs will end up eating it.

Please do not leave wet items on the wood floors, furniture or bed covers. It ruins them. Coasters are provided for your glasses and there are hooks in your room to hang wet things on. You are also welcome to hang stuff on our laundry line in the side yard.

Please leave your breakfast dishes in the sink or dishwasher. If you cook, please clean up after yourself. If you need pots, pans, or other cooking stuff, please ask. We probably have it (including unusual stuff like a croissant cutter or a spaetzle grate). If you use them, please wash pots, pans, and knives (except table knives) by hand and do not put them in the dishwasher.

Please remember to leave your room key! There is a $25 charge for keys that are not returned.
