The room is decorated with souvenirs from our travels worldwide, and the decor was inspired by our trip to Botswana.

The Space

The Hakuna Matata Room is the most basic of our three listings. In-room amenities include a clock radio, and a small TV connected to our aerial antenna. The TV has a built in DVD player (you can borrow DVDs from our large DVD collection) and a Roku box with access to other stations and a subscription movie service. Internet connection is through wi-fi or ethernet. Your room has a dresser with empty drawers and closet space with hangers. There is also a luggage rack and a rocking chair. The room has central heat and air as well as a ceiling fan.

If you'd like a bigger bed, please see our listing for the Wisteria Room, which has a queen sized bed. If you'd like a private half-bath or private separate entry, please see our listing for the 3-room suite with private bath & entry. Both the Wisteria Room and the 3-room suite have small refrigerators and microwave ovens. This room does not.

Guest Access

We have a keypad lock on our front door. You will receive your own code, so you won't need a key. Codes are deleted when guests check-out. You are free to come and go as you wish.

Guests staying in the Hakuna Matata Room will share (if other guests are staying) the adjacent hall bath with guests staying in our Wisteria Room. Often you will have the bathroom to yourself. Toiletries, a robe, fluffy cotton towels and a hair dryer are provided.

A continental breakfast of home-made muffins, breads or other pastries; juice, coffee and tea is included. Hot or cold cereal and yogurt and milk may also be served, if we have it. With advanced notice, special diets can be accommodated.

You may use our kitchen. Laundry facilities are available for a small fee to cover our costs. An iron and ironing board are available (just ask).

The room overlooks our garden, which has a gazebo, pool, and pond. You are welcome to sit on the deck or take a swim in the pool under the redwood trees. For cooler days and nights, we have an outdoor propane heater. Indoors, you can relax in the living room, where we have tourist information for the entire state and a binder of menus for local restaurants. You can play board games or watch movies on the big flatscreen hdtv in the family room. The shared space has a large screen TV with Dish satellite (with 250 channels), Roku, Netflix, and a surround sound home theater system. If you play, you are welcome to play our piano or guitars.

Interaction with Guests

How much interaction you have with us is up to you. We are happy to chat with you. If you want privacy, that's fine too.

The Neighborhood

We live in a safe suburban neighborhood near American River College. We are located 9 miles, from downtown Sacramento. We are easy to get to from all Sacramento area freeways. We are 2 minutes from the junction of Interstate 80 and the Capitol City Freeway. We are a short drive (20 minutes) from the Sacramento Airport via Interstate 5. We are five miles north of Highway 50.

Our neighborhood has established trees. We are near a creek and within walking distance of a riparian park with a bridal/hiking trail and (in the other direction) a suburban park with a community center, playground, and huge grass area with picnic tables.

Sacramento is California's state capitol. Old Sacramento, a state historic park, includes one of the nation's best railroad museums. In nearby downtown, you will find the California's History and Women's museum, and the Crocker Art Museum. Sacramento has a small zoo that specializes in wild cats. They also have red pandas. There are several municipal golf courses, including two near our home. Outdoor recreation enthusiasts can also take advantage of hiking, equestrian and biking trails in the nearby Sierra foothills and along the American River parkway; whitewater raft or kayak the Sacramento or American Rivers; or enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe, two hours to the east. To the west, is the beautiful and world-famous Napa Valley (1 hr 10 minutes), San Francisco (2 hours), and the spectacular Marin and Sonoma coastlines.

Sacramento is in the middle of the state in all directions, making it an ideal stopping place for those traveling from southern California to Oregon and Washington. We are happy to point out great places to eat nearby, or provide tourist advice for other parts of California. My husbands and I are both native Californians. We've traveled to the US, Europe, the Pacific Islands, China and South Africa. We know what travelers need and we try our best to provide it.

Getting around

If you are taking public transportation, we are less than 2 miles from the Watt and I-80 light rail station, where you can catch the #1 bus to a stop about that is 1/2 mile from our home. It takes about 45 minutes to get to our house without a car from downtown using public transportation. However, I work downtown. Depending on my work schedule, I am happy to pick up travelers from downtown (the Amtrack and Greyhound stops are all a short distance from my office) or from the Watt and I-80 light rail station near my house. The Megabus stop has moved from downtown. The new stop at the Q Street light rail station is a 45-minute easy bus ride (get on at the station and get off at the stop that is a 4 minute walk from our house).

If you need to rent a car, there is also an Enterprise Rental Car agency open 7 am - 6 pm M-F and Saturday mornings that is an easy 1 mile walk from our house (and they will pick you up from here).

If you don't have a car, the closest restaurants within walking distance are a sandwich shop (0.8 mile), a pizza place (0.9 mile), an "American" restaurant (1.2 miles), a Denny's coffee shop (1.2 miles), a Mexican Restaurant (1.4 miles), and an excellent vegetarian restaurant (1.5 miles). Some of these restaurants, as well as other local restaurants, will deliver.

The closest large grocery store and shopping center is about 2 miles from our house. There are three different small markets 0.8 - 0.9 miles from our house.

Other Things to Note

We want you to feel secure. We (not the bank) own our home so there is no risk your reservation will be canceled due to foreclosure or landlord issues. For your safety, every room in our home has a new, functioning carbon monoxide and smoke detector. Your room comes with a guest book that contains emergency information, including an evacuation plan. We have working fire extinguishers and a fire hydrant on our property. We are both trained in CPR and first aid. Our pool and pond are separately fenced, and there is an outside phone with emergency instructions.

Check-in time is normally 6 pm. If you need an earlier check in, please ask. We most likely can accommodate you, though your room may not be ready for you until 6 on week days if we've had guests the night before. Check out is flexible. You just need to be out in time for us to clean the room and change the linens if we have another guest arriving. In any case, you are welcome to leave your bags before or after your check in.

We have two very friendly medium sized dogs and a cat that are part of our family and live In our house. The dogs have a dog door out to their separate run, through our laundry room,so you don't need to worry about dog mess if you use our yard. We have a nice wooden pet gate in our entry hall to keep the dogs or cat from getting out or under foot while you are moving your luggage in and out. We also have pet gates (as well as the normal doors) on the bedroom doors upstairs to keep the pets (aka the cat) out of your room and off the beds if you want to leave your bedroom door open. We leave the doors open when there are no guests staying in the room for ventilation and light in the hall. You can walk through the gate (you don't have to take them off the door or step over them). There is a photo of the gates on our blog under our pets section if you would like to see what they look like.

Continental breakfast is complementary. I set it out at night (milk and other perishables are in the refrigerator). Help yourself to breakfast anytime in the morning. If you take out perishables, please return them to the refrigerator. If you would like to prepare your own meal, our kitchen is available for your use.

If you would like a full breakfast on the weekends, I am happy to prepare it for you. We normally can also prepare a bag lunch for you with advance notice. Please see our blog site at (website hidden) for selections and pricing for full breakfast and lunch. Airbnb may block the URL to the blogsite until you have made a confirmed reservation, so if you can't see it and have questions before you book, let me know. I can also make a family style prix fixe dinner or dessert for you and your group. Cost depends on what you would like to eat. Full breakfast, box lunch or dinner require 48 hrs additional notice and may not be available if I have a conflict, so please make sure and ask.

We accept cash or Paypal for any additional charges. If you use Paypal, please designate the payment for friends and family rather than goods and services so that I am not charged a fee that I will have to recover from you.

  • Victoria and Ken were great hosts, they had everything ready for us upon arrival, room was impeccable, water was hot and the breakfast was delicious. All homemade ingredients that would give restaurants a run for their money! honeybutter=heaven! Their pets are very friendly and sweet with strangers, we were welcomed by them in the morning. Parking was easy and the stay was a true pleasure. 5* for this cozy room and sweet hosts!

  • Nice house, quiet neighborhood, lovely hosts, best behaved pets, homemade continental breakfast, reasonably priced. It exceeded our expectations. Certainly would recommend it to others.

  • Very hospitable and very nice accommodations. Our host even made us vegan cupcakes for breakfast when she found out I was vegan! The bed was extremely comfortable, one of the best sleeps I've had all year. Would definitely stay again if we go back to Sacramento.

  • Victoria and her husband are excellent hosts and were quick to respond to my short-notice request for a room. The Hakuna Matata room is cheery and comfortable, and the bathroom has all the nice amenities. The location is very quiet and makes for a peaceful stay. Victoria had a lovely breakfast spread of muffins, granola, yogurt, fruit, coffee, and juice. Of course, the four-legged hosts are the very best part -- two super sweet, calm, playful dogs and a friendly cat. I would highly recommend the Hakuna Matata Room experience!

  • The description and followup information was EXACTLY on point and accurate. I am actually VERY impressed with the effort that Victoria has made to make sure that all of her guests are comfortable and that there are no surprises. This was by far the BEST experience one could hope for.

  • Enjoyed meeting and staying at Victoria's house (for the one night) in Sacramento, CA
Was nice to share some wine and talk about all our travels and experiences.
The breakfast was above what anyone would expect. (yogurt, muffins, toast, melon, homemade jam, French Press coffee, etc:)
Can't wait to find a way back to Sacramento soon.

  • What a lovely stay! Vicky took us in very last minute late in the evening. We didn't think we would find a place that late but Vicky responded within 10mins, We were very grateful. Our room was cozy and I loved the Hakuna Matata theme, reminded me of home. There were snacks and drinks in our room with a great breakfast waiting for us all laid out in the morning. Felt like we were right at home with family. Thank you to both Ken and Vicky.

  • I was in Sacramento for a conference, and I had the joy to stay in this house. I had an absolutely amazing time. It is one of the nicest, homeliest houses I have ever had the chance to live in.

Vicky and her husband were great, attentive to any need I may have. They had the room thoroughly cleaned and organized, the bathroom stocked up with clean towels and a lot of toiletries, and they even laid out breakfast for me in the morning (yummm persimmon muffins!)

If you love pets, this IS the place for you!!! the family has 2 awesome dogs and a super cool cat. They can also keep them in their room if that suits the guests better- In my case, I was all too happy to pet them, they are so cute!

Overall, stellar stay, lovely hosts, and very very nice house. Loved every minute of it.

  • This was my second stay here and again, it was a short but sweet stay. The room was clean and pleasant. I only saw Victoria briefly but felt very welcomed. And I love her two dogs! Next time I need a place to stay in Sacramento I will not hesitate to stay here.

I believe life is short, and we should all try to be kind to one another and leave the world better (or at least no worse) than we found it. I'm a wife, a mom, a sister, a former Girl Scout leader (9 years), a civil engineer, a manager, a mentor, and a friend. My hobbies include making things (quilts, stained glass windows, dolls, and I tried blowing glass once), being outdoors (kayaking, camping, white water rafting), photography, baking, and reading. I like theater, music, and movies. I'm a native Californian and have lived here my entire life. My husband, Ken, is one of the nicest people I know. He is also an engineer and all around handy person. He knows something about almost everything, except French literature. He likes music, reading (science fiction, mostly), and building stuff. We're empty nesters. We have two wonderful kids, of whom we are very proud. We recycle, compost, and have a photovoltaic array on our roof to reduce our dependence on the "grid." I love to travel. My most memorable adventures include seeing sea turtles hatching on the beach in Mexico; having humpback whales surround our boat for about an hour in Hawaii; watching a lion hunt a gazelle in Botswana; rappelling into a cave in New Zealand to zip line through a pitch black cavern (and then free-climbing up two small waterfalls to get back out); having a police escort on about 12 miles of closed freeway to the closing ceremonies of a conference at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China; and taking a series of gondolas over Mt. Blanc to get from France to Italy (with my kids in tow). I've traveled most of the US and parts of western Europe. I'd like to sail around the Greek Islands. I also love to entertain and host guests! I like staying in BnBs and I've always wanted to run one, mostly to meet interesting people and make sure that they have a good experience. In Ireland, it seems that most people have a bnb in their homes. When I heard about airbnb, I thought "What a great idea!" PS: Our animals are friendly and well behaved in the house once they get over their initial excitement of meeting new people. My border collie mix (Sophie) will protect you from wolves (she's very good at it -- we've never seen one around the house), and my bassett hound mix (Colin) will sit in your lap if you let him (but don't because he is too long to fit). Our kitty (Mulan) does what she wants, mostly. She might strike up a conversation with you if she likes you.
