The Space

Enter our garden through our beautiful locked gate (code will be provided) and step back in time to a period when life in California was more relaxed, but do it while enjoying modern comforts. This private three-room suite is on the ground floor of our 4-bedroom 3-bath tri-level home. The rest of the house is up one level, giving you the entire floor to yourself. The suite has a living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom.

The suite's bedroom features a double bed with pillowtop mattress, luxurious linens, a matelasse bedspread and duponi silk comforter. There are a 1940s "waterfall" style vanity, dresser, and nightstand. You can put your suitcase on the wooden luggage rack, but there is no need to live out of it. The closet and dresser drawers are available for you to put away your things. A chest of drawers at the foot of your bed holds extra pillows and blankets.

The former half-bath referenced in some of the reviews was completely gutted and remodeled in fall/winter 2015 to add a shower with both handheld and rainfall shower heads. The bathroom features a water-saving dual-flush toilet, a granite counter with raised basin, and a heated tile floor too keep your toes warm. Fluffy towels and bathrobes are provided, as are basic toiletries.

The suite is named for the art in the living room that features scenes of California. Living room furnishings include a small couch, a comfortable arm chair, and a large credenza (which is my sewing cabinet when there are no guests). If you are here on business, the top of the credenza can be opened out to make a very large worktable. There is also a work chair. I am crafty--at the end of the room is a cabinet of dolls that I have made. A stained glass window I made hangs in the window, and quilts that I made are on a rack behind the bedroom door.

You are welcome to bring in your own food for lunch or dinner. The living room has a microwave and a mini-refrigerator for your exclusive use. There is a coffee bar with a coffee maker and an electric tea kettle. The cabinet under the coffee maker has dishes and bowls, glasses, flatware, and a blender. There is a small foldup "bistro set" that you can set up in the room to provide table space for two people. Or, in temperate weather, you may prefer to enjoy your meals on the covered patio outside your suite, which has a gas barbeque with a side burner, a deep utility sink (cold water only), a table and chairs, and a ceiling fan and spray misters for the summer.

The suite has central air conditioning and heat, though the controlling thermostat is in the master bedroom of the house on the upper floor. For more individual climate control, we provide a small space heater and an oscillating floor fan for your use.

The suite has hardwood floors in the living and bedrooms and tile floors in the bathroom. The small (1") step from the yard to the living room make the suite accessible for those with mobility issues. The bathroom shower is a walk in with a very small curb. However, the doorways are standard width, and the narrow spaces in both the bath and bedroom would make it difficult to get a wheelchair into the bath or near the bed.

The bedroom accommodates 2 guests, but the living room can be set up with a queen-sized aerobed which can accommodate two more. Upon request, we will set up the aerobed and make it up with regular linens.

Other Amenities:
-Two televisions: a flat screen TV with Dish satellite (250 stations), Roku, and a DVD player in the bedroom of your suite and a small TV with a DVD player in the living room of the suite. The TV in the living room is not connected to cable, satellite, or the antenna. As a result, you can only watch DVDs on that one. We have a large collection of classic DVDs that you can borrow.
-Hi-speed wireless internet access throughout the house
-USB wall outlet for charging your devices
-Clock radio with IPOD dock in your bedroom.
-Stereo in the living room of your suite (music CDs available).
-Ironing board and iron in your suite.
-Toiletries provided.
-Coffee-maker in your suite. Freshly ground coffee and tea.
-Complimentary continental breakfast featuring home-baked goods, fruit, yogurt, cereal and juice.
-Solar heated pool with waterfall (summer only)
-Garden with fruit trees (your breakfast may feature fruit from our trees in season), pond, gazebo, and deck.
-New smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your rooms.

The suite has two entrances: in addition to the private keyed entrance from the garden, there is also an entrance from the the upstairs main entry hall of the house via a stairway, making it convenient to access the main rooms of the house upstairs. The keyed door at the top of the stairway, can be locked to ensure your privacy. There may be other guests in our home during your stay; we have two additional guest rooms upstairs (The Hakuna Matata Room and the Wisteria Room), both also listed on AirBnB.

Guest Access

Guests have access to all the common areas of the house and garden. You are welcome to use the common areas (kitchen, living room, dining room, family room) on the main floor of the house, but the main floor is not wheelchair accessible and not easily accessible to guests with mobility issues due to the stairs.

Our garden and pool are right out your sliding door. You can nap on the daybed in the gazebo, swim in the pool in the summer, and relax in the chaise lounge or in the hammock under the redwood trees. The patio, deck, gazebo, pool and yard have lights for evening and nighttime use.

Continental breakfast is included in the price of your stay. You may have it upstairs or, upon request, we will put it out in your room the evening before. With 48 hours advanced notice, special diets or dietary preferences can be accommodated. Also with advanced notice, weekend guests can enjoy a full breakfast for a small additional charge. You also may arrange for kitchen privileges. The main kitchen upstairs is fully-equipped with a gas range, microwave/convection oven, and double electric ovens. Just ask if you need pots or pans or anything else. If you would like to eat in, but don't want to cook, several restaurants in the area offer delivery service for lunch and dinner. Please see our blog for more information on selection and prices for full breakfast and lunch delivery options.

Although the suite is a perfect for a couple, we also welcome well-behaved children in the suite. We have a portable crib, high chair, and booster chair you can borrow if you need them.

We want you to feel secure and safe. We own our home outright, so there is no risk of your reservation being cancelled due to foreclosure or landlord issues. We have a fire extinguisher and fire hydrant on the premises. We are both trained in CPR and first aid. Our pool is fenced separately from the rest of the yard with a 4' safety fence with a locked gate.

Interaction with Guests

We travel and understand what other travelers require. Our goal is to provide all that and more. We have lots of tourist info for Sacramento and other parts of California as well as personal knowledge of much of the state. We can help you plan your day or the rest of your trip. Or if you prefer, you can just sit back and relax in privacy.

The Neighborhood

We live in a tree-lined suburban neighborhood near the junction of I-80 and Business 80, about 9 miles to the northeast of downtown Sacramento, and 20 minutes by car from the Sacramento Airport. The houses in our neighborhood are custom built and the lots vary from a quarter-acre to a few acres. Some properties in the neighborhood have horses. If you want to take a walk, we can tell you where they are. Auburn Boulevard (half a mile away) was the main highway before the interstate was built, and is lined with a variety of businesses, unfortunately, none of the close ones are restaurants.

Getting Around

There are two parks and a nature trail nearby. We are a short drive from recreational opportunities on the American River and the American River greenbelt. There is free street parking in front and along the side of our home. Please do not park in the driveway as we garage our own cars and will likely need to get them out of the garage during your stay.

If you are taking public transportation, we are less than 2 miles from the Watt and I-80 light rail station, where you can catch the #1 bus to a stop about that is 1/2 mile from our home. It takes about 45 minutes to get to our house without a car from downtown using public transportation. The new Megabus stop at the Q Street Light Rail station is an easy 45 bus ride (get on the #82 Regional Transit bus at the station and get off a short 4 minute walk from our house).

If you need to rent a car, there is also an Enterprise Rental Car agency open 7 am - 6 pm M-F and Saturday mornings that is an easy 1 mile walk from our house (and they will pick you up from here).

This is a suburban neighborhood and best for those with a car. If you don't have a car, the closest restaurants within walking distance are a sandwich shop (0.8 mile), a pizza place (0.9 mile), an "American" restaurant (1.2 miles), a Denny's coffee shop (1.2 miles), a Mexican Restaurant (1.4 miles), and an excellent vegetarian restaurant (1.5 miles). Some of these restaurants, as well as other local restaurants, will deliver.

Please see our guidebook for this listing for restaurant and other recommendations.

Other Things to Note

IMPORTANT: We have two very friendly medium sized dogs. The pets live in our house, but do not go into the suite. They have their own fenced yard separate from the main garden/pool area. However, we do sometimes let them into the main yard when we are outside. Please keep the gate to the yard and the front door of the house closed at all times so the dog don't get out into the street. Our animals are friendly and well behaved in the house once they get over their initial excitement of meeting new people.

Because we have three listings, including this one, on Airbnb at this location, there may be other guests present during your stay. In the summer, they may be using the pool or yard during your stay.

We don't wear shoes in the house, but you can wear yours if you want.

Laundry privileges can be arranged for a small charge to cover our costs (instituted after a guest visiting her parents in Sacramento asked if she could do 10 loads of laundry here--we practice and encourage water conservation). See our blog under "Useful Information."

Please note that there is an extra charge per guest for more than two guests that Airbnb will assess when you make your reservation. If you incur additional charges as a result of laundry or meals, we happily accept cash, Paypal, or credit cards.

If you have any concerns or suggestions that would make your stay more enjoyable, please let us know. We do make changes based on suggestions from our guests.

House Rules
No smoking
Not suitable for pets
No parties or events
Check-in time is 3PM - 6PM.

No smoking in the house. You may smoke on the deck, on the covered patio, or in the backyard. We don't smoke, but we have ashtrays for your cigarette butts.

Normal check-in time is from 3 pm to 6 pm. Normal check-out is 11 am. Earlier check-in and later check-out may be available depending on whether there are other guests staying in your room the morning of your arrival and evening of your departure, respectively. If you need to check in or out at times other than our normal times, please ask before you arrive. In any event, we would be happy to store your luggage for you until your room is ready the morning of your arrival or afternoon of your departure, and you are welcome to use the common areas of our home.

Please do not leave wet items on the wood floors, furniture or bed covers. It ruins them. Please put hot and cold drinks on the coasters that are provided. If you have dirty dishes during your stay, please let us know so that we can run them through the dishwasher upstairs.

No need to make the bed when you leave. We will wash and change the bedding. Because we care about the environment and we live in a dry state, we try to conserve water. We do not routinely replace linens for stays of less than a week, but if you need fresh bed linens at any time, please let us know.

Please remember to leave your room keys! There is a $25 for keys that are not returned.

I believe life is short, and we should all try to be kind to one another and leave the world better (or at least no worse) than we found it. I'm a wife, a mom, a sister, a licensed civil engineer, a retired manager, a community volunteer (ccurrently a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate for foster children and formerly a Girl Scout Leader and volunteer for nine years), a mentor, and a friend. My hobbies include making things (quilts, stained glass windows, dolls, and I tried blowing glass once), being outdoors (kayaking, camping, white water rafting), photography, baking, and reading. I like theater, music, and movies. I'm a native Californian and have lived here my entire life.

My husband of thirty plus years and your cohost, Ken, is one of the nicest people I know. He is also an engineer (environmental) and all around handy person. He is a retired Assistant Executive Officer for the Sacramento Regional Water Quality Control Board. He knows something about almost everything. He likes music, reading (science fiction, mostly), and building stuff.

We're empty nesters. We have two wonderful kids, of whom we are very proud. With our professional interest in environmental issues, it may come as no surprise that we recycle, upcycle, compost, and use minimal pesticides. We try to practice water conservation, and we reuse our greywater (your shower water irrigates our flower beds). We also have a solar heater for our pool and photovoltaic array on our roof to reduce our dependence on the "grid."

We love to travel. Most memorable adventures include seeing sea turtles hatching on the beach in Mexico; having humpback whales surround our boat for about an hour in Hawaii; watching a lion hunt a gazelle in Botswana; rappelling into a cave in New Zealand to zip line through a pitch black cavern (and then free-climbing up two small waterfalls to get back out); having a police escort on about 12 miles of closed freeway to the closing ceremonies of a conference at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China; and taking a series of gondolas over Mt. Blanc to get from France to Italy (with our young kids in tow). I've traveled most of the US and parts of western Europe. I'd like to sail around the Greek Islands.

We enjoy hosting people and learning about other places. In Ireland, it seems that most people have a bnb in their homes. When I heard about Airbnb, I thought "What a great idea!"
