About this listing

The space

Looking for the quintessential Australian beach holiday within easy reach of Sydney? Kangaroos, possums and parrots galore? Depot Beach (2 hours drive from Canberra and 3.5 hours from Sydney) is the place!
The original 3 bedroom renovated cottage provides a lifestyle time capsule of 60's Summer holidays, with all the comforts of the 21st century.
Located on the fringe of Murramarang National Park, the verandah takes in the ocean views through the bush only interrupted by the multitude of birdlife and kangaroos.
THE COTTAGE is warm and cozy: there are two bedrooms with queen beds (one with a single also). The 3rd bedroom has a double bunk. Doonas and pillows are supplied. Linen can also be supplied upon request.
In addition to the front verandah, the is an outdoor dining area at the rear of the house.
Depot is Depot Beach is wonderful at all times of year. The winters are mild and usually clear and sunny -- great for bushwalking through the forrest or exploring the beaches to the north such as the famous Pebbly Beach. Nights can be cold but you will be snug as the cottage has a wood stove and is well insulated.
There is a large stock of books, movies & board games. There is also an ipod dock.
The kitchen is well equipped and there is an easy to use gas barbeque.
The bathroom is completely renovated and includes washing machine and dryer.
LOCAL AREA
Depot Beach is a small village approximately 15 kms north of Batemans Bay.
Depot is a great surfing beach but is also safe for younger or inexperienced swimmers. North Durras Beach is another renowned surfing beach that is a short walk across the headland, or around the rock platform at low tide. The rock platform is home to vast numbers of rock pools with diverse marine life.
The South Coast is renowned for excellent fishing and Depot Beach is no exception. There are great spots for beach fishing, lake fishing and also rock platforms. Depending upon the time of year you can catch snapper, redfish, leatherjacket and flathead.
Durras Lake, one of the most pristine coastal lakes in NSW, is perfect for canoeing, prawning and boating.
MURRAMARANG NATIONAL PARK is a sanctuary for a multitude of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, echidna, possums, goanna and spectacularly colourful parrots and other birds.
The park is home to over 207 species of birds and 39 native mammals as well as over 400 species of flora.
Look for lyrebirds, parrots, gliders, sea eagles and the endangered sooty oyster catcher.
Marine life is also abundant. Dolphins are regulars and whales frequently visit on their seasonal migration (heading north in April/May and south in October/November).
SUPPLIES
There are no shops at Depot, one of its many charms -- essentials such as bread and milk (and icecreams) can be purchased at the North Durras Convenience Store.
There is a Woolworths, Coles and Aldi in Batemans Bay, as well as a good butcher (at Stocklands) and terrific oysters and fish at the Pearly Oyster Bar. For excellent fresh fruit and vegies try the hydroponic farm on the South Durras Rd – about 500m from the turn off on the Princes Highway. You can also purchase marvellous family pies (an Australian specialty) of many different types (sweet and savoury) at East Lynne.

Barbeque: Please clean the bbq after use, ensure the gas is off and replace the cover to slow down the inevitable rusting near the sea. Please let me know if it runs out of gas while you are staying so that we can replace the gas bottle.
Cleaning: we have a cleaner who does the floors and bathroom as well as a general tidy. He does not do the washing up so please ensure you do it before you leave, and that you leave the benches clean.
Please pack away board games after use.

The cottage is in a great location with an abundance of wildlife on the doorstep! Unfortunately the weekend we visited was very wet, and this may have contributed to the rather damp smell throughout the cottage- and more noticeably in the outer bunk room (which we didn't need to utilise on this trip, fortunately). There are plenty of games and books to keep you occupied, and the beach is only a short walk away.

It was a lovely stay. It would be more helpful if we get floor plan before we book.

Depot Beach Shack is set in an amazing setting close to the beach and in a national park. Views of the sea from the house and a lovely balcony to sit and watch and listen from. We had lots of visits from local wildlife - kangaroos goannas and possums - and the birdlife was abundant. My young grandson loved the wildlife and my adult son loved the (very successful) beach fishing. Suzanne was a very accommodating host and responded quickly to all emails and requests. I thoroughly recommend this for a peaceful and relaxing getaway.

I live in Canberra where I work for the Australian Government. My son and I love travelling. We are incredibly lucky to have a beach house only 2 hours away.
I am an avid reader and gardener.
