A unique, secluded, rustic cabin nestled on 10 acres of Ponderosa pine forest. Enjoy morning coffee on the sunny, spacious deck, afternoon picnics by the creek, a cozy wood fire in the evening and a sky full of stars at night. Only 12 minutes from great food and cafes in Spearfish; 20 minutes to Deadwood.

The cabin is best for couples, families and groups of close friends. Note limited privacy; there are no bedrooms with doors you can close.

The space
This is not your typical modern vacation home. The naturally weathered cabin was hand built in the 1970's using locally harvested rough lumber, homemade windows and one-of-a-kind walnut flooring. The main house has all the comforts of home. Sleeps 6 with an upstairs loft with queen bed plus a downstairs common-space TV room/bedroom with a queen bed and futon. Larger groups who need more space and/or more privacy can also rent the “bunkhouse,” a small second cabin with a queen-size futon bed downstairs and bunk bed upstairs (try 10-person search for this option. Note Bunkhouse is never rented separately.). The great room in the big house has a super well-equipped corner kitchen and large bay window for wide-angle views of woods and wildlife. Back bedroom has a new 55-inch TV with free access to Netflix, HBO and Amazon Prime. A full size desk in one corner of the great room provides an excellent work space.
The cabin sits on a sunny, south-facing, wooded hillside at the end of a quarter-mile gravel driveway. There's not another house in sight, but you are very likely to see deer, turkey and other wildlife. Coyotes are often heard singing their wild, unforgettable song on the canyon ridge at night.

Because of forest fire risk no outdoor fires allowed.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire main house, the bunkhouse (if reserved) and ten acres of oak, aspen and ponderosa pine woods. Property also includes a large grassy meadow and a picnic table beside the creek.

Other things to note
Maitland canyon has sketchy cell signal on the road, but cell phone service is good in the cabin (we have a signal booster). Wifi calling is excellent. There is also a land-line phone and 55" TV with links to Netflix, HBO, etc.
Please note limited privacy. There are no bedrooms with doors you can close.
The seasonal creek usually (not always) dries up sometime in July.
Because of forest fire risk no outdoor fires allowed.

Neighborhood highlights

Guests, especially kids, love the views from the loft and the deck, the woods, the creek and nearby hiking. Black Hills National Forest boundary is 1/4 mile away. The woods are populated with deer, wild turkey, raccoons, foxes, porcupines, red squirrels, hawks and eagles and, of course, coyotes. The creek is unpredictable, but usually it's a rushing torrent in June, a placid brook in July and dried up in August (although in 2015 and 2019 it ran all summer). Spearfish (5 miles) and Deadwood (8 miles) both feature excellent coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores, shopping and lots of entertainment. Spearfish Canyon, 2 miles away, is often described as the most "breathtakingly beautiful canyon" in the world. Spectacular outings, including the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Devil's Tower in Wyoming, are easy day trips. A nearly endless number of fun outdoor recreational activities - hiking, biking, swimming, golf, fishing, rock climbing, creek tubing, 4-wheeling, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and many more - are nearby. An extensive things-to-do guide is available in the cabin.
