About this listing

Your private guest house is a sweet home away from home. It is light & airy, and just a walk or bike to the great food, shopping & conveniences of Ubud Center. The rains have come and the garden is lush and full of birds butterflies.

The space

This private guest house is surrounded by trees and has lots of light and air. Set away from the street, you will feel a part of the Balinese community- which includes roosters, neighboring cows, & birds. If you like the sounds of frogs, crickets, Balinese lizards, occasional gamelan and dance rehearsals, then this is the place for you.
Also, you will have wireless internet.

The ground floor has simple cooking facilities as well as a quiet sitting area. Upstairs the bedroom has one queen bed, dresser armory and a three sided veranda. Your private bathroom located on the ground floor includes a shower with warm water. The facility is clean with basic housekeeping support. However, we seek self-sufficient guests who can manage your own daily activities and who respect the lives of the Balinese families that surround this cottage. Breakfast is not included.

Our village of Pengosekan is directly south of Ubud (walking distance of 15 minutes to the south edge of Ubud). An abundance of restaurants (local and for tourist) are readily available.
PLEASE NOTE: At times there are music rehearsals happening at our neighbor's house.
Rehearsals are scheduled as follows: Feb - May 2016, no rehearsals are anticipated.

Guest access

You will have your private bedroom and bathroom, as well as an open downstairs area that is all your own. There is a large "bale bengong" which is where you may see some dance rehearsals. The main house is our private home.

Interaction with guests

Emiko and Ida can help you get set up and of course, if you have any urgent situations. Emiko is usually working on various projects during the day and in the afternoons can be found at rehearsals nearby (which you can drop in and see if you'd like). We are happy to give you as much privacy as you like.

Other things to note

We love our home and would love to have kind, open hearted people there. Our garden is full of big big trees, ferns, birds, butterflies. When you walk off the street into the compound, the cool air from the shade of the trees always makes me think "I'm so glad this is my home." This is not a hermetically sealed 5 star hotel, it's a real home. If you want the Four Seasons, this isn't the place for you. But if you want to feel what it's like to be in Bali, you're in the right place.
We don't do daily housekeeping, but if you are here for a longer stay we'll give you fresh sheets and towels as needed.

We seek guests who will feel comfortable living in BALI. This is not a party house, and are we are not tourist business. The house is great for a couple seeking a place to be together or single person who is visiting Bali to write, do yoga, or to get to know this beautiful island. This guest house is very safe and if you'd like someone to come in and clean every week, we can arrange that for an extra fee. Cudamani has supported the gamelan and dance education of hundreds of youth in Pengosekan village.

Emiko and Dewa's guesthouse is situated at the end of a private driveway near the intersection of Pengosekan and Nyuh Kuning. I found the setting to be peaceful and quiet with a beautifully landscaped garden and field separating the home from the busy street. This became my home away from home when I stayed for 2 months in Spring. The only thing to note is that since Bali is a tropical and verdant habitat, you will encounter many species of insects (especially ants and mosquitos), geckos, frogs, butterflies and spiders. I didn't find this too bothersome or unmanageable, but it is something you should be aware of and prepared for when traveling here. Since Emiko and Dewa weren’t in residence during the time I stayed, it was Ida and her husband Nyoman who helped take care of the guesthouse and any requests I had. They were both very friendly, kind and helpful during my stay. I even got an unexpected chance to witness a local Balinese dance practice session in the patio of the main house for some of the younger members of Cudamani organization when I first arrived. Later, Ida graciously invited me to join her and her family for a local performance at MAS Temple for the anniversary of Gianyar village. I truly had a comfortable and memorable time and I miss Bali already! I would definitely consider returning to stay at Emiko and Dewa’s place (and visiting Ida) the next time I return to Bali.

We stayed at Dewa's place for two months. We loved the place in the local neibourhood, surrouned by trees and the nature sounds. Its true that when it's busy you can hear the traffic from far away, but it didnt really bother us. Dewa and Emiko were not in Bali, but we had contact and they were ready to help and give us information. Ida took good care of us always with a big smile indeed! Thank you all!

We spent an amazing time at Dewa's place. The room is very well located, away from the street noise but also reasonably close to Ubud. The house is well equipped, cosy and peaceful. It's surrounded by luxuriant vegetation and by the enchanting sounds of nature. Dewa and Emiko were away during our stay but Ida took very good care of us. She was always ready to help us with a big smile on her face. We strongly recommend this beautiful house! We absolutely loved it. Jeremy & Erica

Dewa and Emiko are the best hosts I could imagine. We had some good talks, got lots of hints and felt so very welcome, I could not have imagined. Additionally we were also invited to a Gamelan rehersal at the house of Dewas parents, which we enjoyed very much. The guesthouse itself is absolutely marvelous equipped with it's own little kitchen, bathroom and a balcony. If you are looking for the best homestay at Bali, I think you found it now.

Thank you so much for the best Bali experience! I loved the room and the area, it was pleasant and quiet- tucked away from the bustle of Ubud. I loved watching morning sunrises from the balcony. The bed was very comfortable and clean. The shower is a little touchy, going from hot to cold constantly- but it really wasn't a concern. Thanks for much for the tea and coffee, and the welcoming environment. I hope to one day stay here again!

Thank you Dustin! We were so happy to have you here! I'm glad that you had a pleasant visit. We look forward to you coming back again some day. Emiko (and Dewa) p.s. I have someone coming in to check on the water heater, thanks for the note!

I had a very pleasant stay at Dewa’s and the hosts made me feel very welcome :) When I arrived, there was an “information package” waiting for me, with info about local whereabouts, WiFi etc and that was very useful. When there was a celebration at a local temple, the hosts lent me a sarong and a sash so that I would be able to attend the event, which was incredible to say the least. The house is as lovely as it looks in the photographs, with an open veranda on the ground floor and a nice bedroom on the first floor. However, you may want to be aware that as the house sits in a garden, then apart from geckos, you will come across lots of other creatures, including frogs, bats, insects and spiders – and with those last guys I did have a problem ;) Moreover, if you don’t plan to use a scooter, you will want to have a light with you as the driveway to the house is rather long and dark. But generally I had a very pleasant stay :)

We are a family of four, Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Teenage Bears 1 & 2. We are all artists...differing degrees of musician-dancer-vocalist. Our home, which sits on a nice spacious plot of land, serves not only the needs of our family of four, it is also sometimes visited by the musicians and dancers of Çudamani, one of the most amazing performing arts groups in world (our completely unbiased opinion!!!). You will have your own space, but if you are lucky, you can peek out and see some amazing beauty happening in the garden pavilion. We spend a lot of time traveling between the SF Bay Area in the US and Bali. We love the arts, travel, family, telling funny stories and admiring the butterflies in the garden. We designed and built this home (well, ok we didn't lay the bricks, but you know what I mean), so it is full of love and great spirit.

You'll see my sister or my nieces bringing in offerings to the shrines in the garden and pavilion. They're lovely, gentle people who will stop by just for few minutes for the offerings and then back down the hill to their home. Welcome to Bali.
