About this listing
Come and stay in my unique London townhouse. A piece of history in trendy Bermondsey, the house dates back to the 1790s. It is ideally situated for the City, West End and Canary Wharf so makes a great base for sight-seeing, holidays and week-end breaks, or as a pied-à-terre for those visiting or working in London’s business districts.
This is a wonderfully light, large and luxurious studio flat (40m2/430sq. ft) on the first floor with a view over the garden. You just share the front door to the house and the stairs, so are totally independent. It should feel a bit like staying in a large suite in a boutique aparthotel! Completely refurbished, but at the same time retaining the original period features, the studio accommodates two people comfortably. Original wooden floorboards and the large bay window give a cosy but light and spacious feel.
The comfy beds from the famous furniture store, Heal's, can be made up as one super-king size double or as twins, as required, and should give you a fantastic night's sleep.
The huge bathroom is equipped with a brand new extra-large shower and a beautiful freestanding bath. Soaps, shampoo and towels are provided.
You have your own fully equipped kitchenette with kettle, toaster, microwave oven (please note that there is no hob) and full-sized fridge There is a new TV and DVD player and you also have free wifi access.
I am usually around, a floor or two below, to give advice on places to eat and shop, and to answer any questions you might have. At the same time, you are totally independent and can make yourself completely at home, have a meal, watch TV or just chill with a book or magazine.
In addition to the above, the studio has a hair dryer, iron and ironing board. There is no washing machine in the studio, however, for guests staying longer than 1 week, it is possible to use my washing machine which can be found on the lower ground floor. There is no tumble dryer but I can provide airers for hanging your washing on. Just ask!
EATING AND DRINKING
You have lots of choice when it comes to places to eat nearby, from “Manze’s”, London’s oldest surviving eel and pie shop, to the famous “Pont de la Tour” with its amazing views of the river and Tower Bridge. You’ll find the award winning Italian restaurant, “Zucca”, and acclaimed tapas bars, “Jose” and "Pizarro", on fashionable Bermondsey Street as well as some other great restaurants, cafes and pubs.
For one of the most exciting views in London, why not go for cocktails in the Atrium Bar on the 31st floor of The Shard? On the other hand, if you prefer to stay at home but are too tired to cook, there’s a fish and chip shop opposite the house. The portions are huge! Or if you like your food a bit spicier, there’s an excellent Indian takeaway just along the street.
If you feel like catering for yourself, Borough Market, known as “London’s larder”, is in walking distance and comes to life from Thursday to Saturday. Here you can find everything from the most delicious British cheeses to fresh fish and game. Other great places to shop for food nearby include the markets on Maltby Street, Spa Terminus and Bermondsey Square which are held on Saturday mornings, all three of which are just a 5 minute walk away. If all that shopping has made you thirsty, you can stop off for a glass or two of natural wine at “40 Maltby Street” and enjoy some delicious seasonal food at the same time. They also sell very reasonably priced bottles to take away.
SEE THE SIGHTS
Take a stroll along the banks of the Thames to Tate Modern and Shakepeare’s Globe Theatre, or visit White Cube on Bermondsey Street, the biggest private contemporary art space in Europe. Find out how it feels to look down on London from the tallest building in Europe, The Shard, which has recently opened to the public and is a short walk away at London Bridge.
If you are after some traditional sight-seeing, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London are close by, or take a boat trip down the Thames to historic Greenwich or upstream to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.
Buses stop every few minutes just in front of the house
The Number 1 takes you to the West End and its theatres and shops in 20 - 30 minutes. It also runs every 30 minutes throughout the night.
The 78 goes to trendy Shoreditch and the City, London's main business quarter, via Tower Bridge (10 minutes) and Liverpool Street station (20 minutes).

My friend and I stayed at this flat for 3 nights and found it to be perfect for our first time in London! It was surprisingly spacious, very clean, and comfortable. Upon our arrival, Sarah kindly helped us to get oriented with transportation options and such. She was the perfect balance of a host; available and helpful but gave us plenty of space, as we had the second floor all to ourselves. The location was great! The bus stops just outside the flat and the Tube stop is a short walk. We never felt far from all the important sights and central London in general. Would happily stay here again and couldn't recommend it more!
This experience was beyond fantastic! Sarah was an excellent host and her space was perfect for our stay in the city. She told us a number of excellent ideas for exploring and really went the extra mile to make our time lovely. Public transportation was easy to utilize and the nearby restaurants and pubs were all great. I would definitely recommend staying here to anyone looking to spend some time in London.
Fantastic. Thank you to Sarah for making our stay so comfortable. Nothing was a bother and she went above and beyond to make our stay as lovely as it was. Sarah even offered to do our washing.
We were greeted with a very happy smile and a cold bottle of champagne in the fridge. What a great start to our London adventure. The buses were directly out the front of the house that took you wherever you needed to go. Easy to get home to after a late night west end theatre evening. The bed was comfortable and the appartment was large enough for 2 people. Then bathroom was a real treat with a huge bath and all toileteries. Thank you to Sarah we will highly recommend her apartment and only hope we will be able to return to London and stay with her again. Kind regards, Vicki and Peter
This was our first experience with Airbnb and we were very pleased. Two bus stops were right out the door, a pub two doors down the street, plus a small convenience store nearby.
Our flat was very clean with a large bay window overlooking a backyard garden. The bathroom was large with a claw foot tub and a separate shower enclosure.
Sarah, our hostess, was outstanding and we can't wait to return.
Sarah's place was a very nice home away from home for our visit to London.
Sarah was an excellent host and she was very helpful with transport directions and lots of local recommendations.
The apartment was very tidy and was well located, close to the bus aand the tube.
Thanks Sarah for a great stay.
Sarah was a great host! The apartment was so clean and beautiful we were sad to leave! The bus system was easy and right out the front!
Sarah was incredibly welcoming and the apartment was amazing - charming architectural details and decor, and a great location - we felt so at home here! Sarah gave us all of the relevant details we needed for our stay when we checked in, then left us to it - could not have asked for a better host. The bed was super comfortable and I could honestly live in that bathroom - great natural light, good water pressure in the shower, and the bath is the perfect remedy for aching feet after a day of sightseeing around London! The location was quiet, even though we had the window open at night. The bus is super convenient, right out front! The apartment was stocked with everything we needed. Would stay again without question.

About the Host, Sarah
“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”, so said the 18th century Londoner, Samuel Johnson. I love London and its history and traditions, but it is also constantly changing which is what makes it such an exciting place to live. There is always something new to experience whether it’s the highest building in Europe blocking out the skyline (aka The Shard) or some delicious natural wines to taste at the wonderful “40 Maltby St” under the railway arches just a few streets away. Although I love to travel, and I even spent six years living in France where I return regularly, I’m always happy to come back to my home city. I’m looking forward to passing on some local knowledge as well as tapping into the Airbnb network on my next holidays.
