About This Listing
This newly renovated apartment is on the third floor of a victorian house on a quiet street in Harvard Sq. It's close to shops, restaurants and public transportation. It has 2 bedrooms, an eat in kitchen and a lovely back deck for relaxing.
It's a great two bedroom apartment right in Harvard Sq (**limited parking**— please see details below)! One bedroom has a queen bed (tempurpedic), dresser, TV and closet. The other bedroom has a queen bed (tempurpedic), a couch that folds out, a dresser and closet. There is a full bathroom and fully equipped kitchen for cooking. There is also a great private deck for your use!
The apartment is private and there are 3 bikes (with locks and helmets) that you can borrow.
Harvard Square is a great neighborhood- lots of cafes, shops, restaurant and night life. Luckily my house is just outside of Harvard Square on a quiet street in Cambridge. The apartment is very close to the Charles River, which is a great place to jog or bike ride. Cambridge is a wonderful place to visit, I'm sure you'll have an amazing time!
**Parking: Please note that parking in this area is VERY LIMITED, unfortunately!
RESIDENT/GUEST PARKING: We have only one visitor parking pass for all 6 apartments, available at a first-ask, first-receive basis. If you want a pass you **must** confirm that one is available for you (you may park for up to 3 days at a time; the zone in which you can park is on the back of the pass which you should put on your dashboard, face up). METERS: There is *2 hour* metered parking at the end of the street (Mt. Auburn St.), and several garages in the Harvard Square area if you have a car (for example, the (Charles Square Garage at One Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA 02138, (email hidden), (phone number hidden), (website hidden)). PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: We strongly urge you to use the Boston Area's public transportation (the subway is called the "T" :-) ) and the Harvard Square Station is a 7 minute walk away (address: 1400 Chester Square, Cambridge, MA 02138). CAR RENTALS (ZIPCAR): An alternative to having a car full-time during your stay is to rent a car hourly, daily, etc. through (website hidden). Please check their website for details (there are 2 locations for Zipcars at both ends of Banks Street! Please check with them for their availability). Again, please, please, please plan in advance if you have a car. If you do not have a pass and park on the street without a meter it is very likely that you will be ticketed and/or towed shortly after you park there (ticketing in Cambridge is aggressive!)

The room was nice and I liked the rooftop. It's great that you can use the fridge and kitchen if you want to cook (I didn't though). Marco is super friendly and nice to talk to. However, due to the distance from Boston and the size of the room, I found it a bit overpriced compared to other rooms. Overall: 4/5.
Am glad that you liked the space! Yes, although we are close to Boston, most folks are here to be in the City of Cambridge (oftentimes they are at Harvard & we are right smack in the middle of the University's campus!) so usually our location is our strongest point! :) Warm Wishes, Marco
Monica and Marco were a joy to rent from, we booked at the last minute and they were helpful from beginning to end. The location is within walking distance of Cambridge and close to many shops. The rooms and bathroom were spacious and comfortable. I would highly recommend renting from Monica and Marco for my next trip to Boston.
It was my first time Airbnb and experience is great. Macro is a nice host, she explained everything about house and even about Boston. We can find nearly everything we need in this house and make us feel like home. Location is good as well, which is very near to Harvard Square and in a quiet safe neighborhood.
Both rooms in the flat were great. I stayed here as just me, but agree with the previous reviewers about total space. The kitchen and bathrooms have been recently renovated making this a great bnb. The location is very convenient and Marco was a very accommodating host. I'd definitely recommend staying here, it felt really homely, but you may want to split the cost with another person or 2

About the Host, Monica (& Marco)
Welcome to the Cambridge Karma house!
We wanted a name that embodies our feelings and philosophy around hosting, and essentially it is about karma- the notion that our actions and intentions will come back to us and influence our future, whether they be positive or negative. Karma is similar to the golden rule of “treat others the way you want to be treated." We believe that this is a good way to go through the world and attempt to always practice this with our guests. We will treat you with love, kindness and respect, and we expect the same from our guests--that they treat the hosts, other guests in the house, and the space itself, with respect and kindness.
Hosting is an absolute pleasure for us and we look forward to meeting you! Please let us know if you need anything or have questions. Mónica is starting a farm-to-table bilingual Spanish English cafe in East Boston called La Sanghita (check us (email hidden)!) and Marco is taking time off from zir's (ze doesn't believe in the gender-binary system and stopped identifying completely as female several years ago and prefers the pronoun "ze" as opposed to "she" as ze currently identifies as gender-queer) doctoral program in medical anthropology to, among other things (like managing the Karma House!), meet zir's athletic goals, be an effective transgender and overall social justice activist. Marco is in process of taking over Monica's managerial position at the Karma House; thus, please direct your (un-google-able, please as ze is swamped with maintaining and improving the house! ;) :) ) questions and/or concerns toward Marco (and secondarily to Monica); feel free to write to us in English or Spanish as we are both 1/2 Colombian and bilingual).
You will likely meet either Tom, our wonderful contractor or Jim our fantastic plummer! Their work is essential to the house as it was built over 100 years ago in 1887, and is in need of constant repairs.
We try to always be friendly and caring to our guests so plea do let us know if there's anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable. ¡Welcome to the Karma House, Bienvenid@s a la Casa de Karma!
*!*!*PARKING*!*!* : Due to the limited availability of parking in Cambridge, we suggest you not bring a car. If you do, we have 1 visitors parking pass available; however, **please** check with Marco to see if it is free (it is highly prized and often unavailable!)
****TIDINESS & CLEANLINESS of your Living Space When Checking Out***
There is a short window period between checking in and checking out and oftentimes we are booked back to back with multiple apartments to prepare. If your apartment takes more than about an hour to clean it is likely we will draw from your deposit for this extra service of your apartment requiring a deep cleaning after you check out. Crumbs and food all over the tables and counters (or food in the trash; see below under "Compost"!), spilled products on the bathroom sink, this is not what we expect to encounter to turn around the apartment to the next guest. The apartments are large and wiping all the surfaces down, cleaning the floors and changing the bedding and towels in the most basic way usually takes about an hour. In a way we're trying to clean invisible things (germs, finger prints, dust, etc.) form one guest to the next; when we clean and prepare apartments we do not expect to have to pick-up-after-you. If we do, again, we may keep part, or all, of your deposit money (around $40/hr of extra cleaning).
***COMPOSTING + RECYCLING*** : We take how much trash we produce seriously (as our Earth is under seriously strained circumstances in terms of how much toxic matter we are exposing it to). Please try to recycle or compost everything before putting it into the trash. We have small recycling containers in the apartments and have zip-lock plastic bags in the refrigerator where you can store compost material (having a container with compost material, unfortunately, will attract pests like ants to the house so we ask our guests to freeze their compost material until it can go out to the black compost wheel in the garden.
>>> In Your Apartment please compost your food and other organic material and recycle anything that you can
What? : organic material (think all of your left over food! Also egg shells, coffee grinds, etc.
Where? : in the freezer (we don't want to have compost bins in the apartments as these can attract pests. Please freeze them in zip lock bags until you put these outside in the black compost wheel in the garden.
What? : Paper (ex. receipts, newspaper, tissues), Glass (ex. bottles), Aluminum (ex. cans), Plastic (ex. packaging material; note: if you can, put soft plastics to the side as these have to go to a special recycling place. NEVER put any styrofoam, food or severely food-soiled materials here (clean it, please! for the Earth's sake!) or styrofoam; ever!!)
Where? : Recycling bins are in the kitchen close to the trash can.
anything that is NOT compostable (food) or recyclable (paper, glass, aluminum, plastic) and that cannot be re-used. Examples: styrofoam, dirt and hair (though this can be put into the dirt in the garden)....most things can be recycled! :)
Outside of the Apartment>>> :
If you are living here long term or want and/or need to take out your waste you'll find compost, recycling and trash receptacles on the left hand side of the building, when facing it:
COMPOST WHEEL: BLACK WHEEL with a latch on it located in the garden (put all your organic waste here; think "food")
RECYCLING BINS: these are LARGE NAVY BLUE BINS (larger than the trash bins!). Put all your clean recycling material here.
TRASH CANS: these are either BLACK OR GREY bins (smaller than the recycling bins).
Note: Please SEAL YOUR TRASH BAGS COMPLETELY. Cambridge will reject trash if it is not disposed of properly; moreover we feel that it is disrespectful of folks collecting the trash to midway have a bag full of trash fall all over the place because it was not tied up. We are serious about respecting the place and those around you, as well as yourself, with regards to leaving the apartments clean and tidy when you check out and mirroring this in how you dispose of any waste that you produce. Compost and Recycle everything that you can and put the rest (if any; many guests produce recycling and compost) in tightly sealed bags in the trash bins,
Think: "PAPER, GLASS, ALUMINUM & PLASTIC…recycling even these makes the world even more FANTASTIC [than it already is :-) ]!"
(but to help even more, let's all go about our lives first REDUCING the amount of waste we produce, then REUSING things if we can, and if not, then try to RECYCLE! ...... Only together can we improve our Earth's poor state of "health" of being highly polluted with toxic matter).
Cuteness aside, even if you do not (and we hope that you do, or will start to), we do take disposing of waste properly and being respectful of people who prepare the apartments for other guest and those who help us dispose of our waste SERIOUSLY. The Cambridge Karma House intends to keep its waste at a minimum. Thus, if extra services are required by us due to how you leave the apartment (including your waste) ex. checking out with the apartment inappropriately dirty or disorderly, AND/OR putting a great deal of recyclable material in the trash can WE MAY WITHHOLD SOME OR ALL OF YOUR DEPOSIT MONEY to intensively clean and/or organize the apartment and/or DISPOSE OF YOUR WASTE PROPERLY (ex. separating out plastic gallon jugs, bottles and newspapers from the trash and put it in the recycling bin). The earth cannot afford to hold any more of our waste and turning a cold shoulder to Nature's need for care and help is not something the Karma House wants to do. WE RECYCLE AND COMPOST AND EXPECT OUR GUESTS TO AS WELL. Note: If you have a medical, or some other very good reason as to why you cannot either maintain the living space clean and tidy (ex. your back is injured and you cannot pick up the remote control that dropped onto the floor) or recycle and compost please do let us know and we will not charge you for extra cleaning and/or our separating trash from recycling material when preparing the apartment for the next guests.
