Tsuwano Exploring
Tsuwano, the former thriving castle town, is situated at the foot of Mt. Aonoyama.
It offers many historic scenery including a range of white earthen wall-surrounded old houses standing along the waterways with irises in full bloom, a shrine with a tunnel of small red shrine gates (Taikodani Inari Shrine; one of the Japan’s five greatest Inari shrines),
And a pass (or hill) telling a sad story of Japanese Catholics who perished for religious belief. (Otome Pass).

You pretty get exactly as advertised with this place though there was no breakfast offere. The location is pretty great. It's just a 15 minute walk from the lift & shrine. About a 30 min walk to & from the train station so it'd be best to take a taxi if carrying large or heavy luggage. It can get pretty cold at night which I didn't expect so dress accordingly at night. Also, Satoshi smokes so the first floor smells like cigarettes. There were quite a few nats & flies in my room & bathroom. Speaking of the bathroom it doesn't look like much but the water pressure is great & the water gets pretty hot. All in all, this place is fine for a night, maybe two but that's about how long you'd probably be staying in Tsuwano anyway.

Satoshi was a great host! Our room was very clean and we enjoyed our stay. We were a short walk from the castle ruins which was our main destination and we also walked to/from the town, although it is a bit farther, maybe 1.5 miles. Also, we found "Hero Town" which is about a 5 minute walk, it is a Korean BBQ style restaurant. Great food for a reasonable price. The beds and men's bathroom are traditional Japanese so if this does not suit your taste, you have been warned. There is a normal restroom for women. The shower is also shared. If you have a high maintenance partner - look elsewhere :)

Satoshi san was a very generous and accommodating host. As he is also an excellent cook, I highly recommend the breakfast and dinner. He is also an interesting person to talk to - he knows about a lot of things! Though the minshuku is a little far from the train station if you have luggage, a taxi to there is only ¥750, and the center of the village a short walk. You can even walk from the minshuku to the big shrine and then to the village center in less than an hour.

Satoshis house is about a 30 minute walk from the station, fairly easy to get to (mostly just go straight) All facilities are shared apart from the tv in the room. I only saw him when I checked in, it was though I had the house to myself! Wi-Fi is good.

Nice, simple inn in a beautiful small town nestled in the mountains. We had a big room for us and our two small children. Shared bathroom was very clean (but smelled bad). This place is a bit of a hike (20 min walk) from main station, which is tough several times a day with small kids in the heat, but very doable for adults.
