Secondary Historic district apartment with view of historic churches. Has a huge suite bedroom with sitting area, Queen size bed, Beautiful kitchen which is light bright and modern. Tremendous amount of closet space. Even though the apartment is a 15 minute walk to parque calderon, it is on a more quiet side street, but still a half block from endless bus stops which can take you to all the sights in the valley. Apartment comes with the things you need in the kitchen, blender, plates, glasses, etc.
short walk to mercado 3 de noviembre where you can buy fruit, meats, etc. Short walk to the bus line that takes you to Cuenca´s baños hot springs.
Great place at a great rate within easy walking distance (15-20 minutes) to the central bus station and to the downtown core. We especially loved the light kitchen and dining area that is separate from the bedroom/living room. The owner lives next door and was always very concerned about our well-being. We had some communication difficulties with the host (the only reason for the 4 star rating instead of 5 stars) but at the end, everything worked out just fine.
We found Travis to be extremely accommodative, especially after a delayed arrival. We called to let him know of our delay and he had no problem meeting us outside the apartment at 10:30pm. He helped us with our luggage and gave us the quick overview of the apartment and neighborhood. The apartment is much more spacious than the pictures show and exceeded our expectations. The kitchen was huge and well equipped. The bedroom had ample closet space and was spacious as well. The wifi was great by Ecuador standards. The on demand hot water heater gave non stop hot water. The location is a fun 15-20 minute walk to the best parts of Cuenca. The apartment is extremely safe with a high wall and electric fence and 3 deadbolt doors between the street and the apartment. The only small complaint is that the metal fabrication/concrete company across the street starts work early with some banging and the gas man beeps his horn every morning around 7am. However, all of Cuenca is a busy town in the morning and honking/car alarms are impossible to avoid. We would recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Cuenca. Thanks Travis and Zulma for a wonderful stay.
This was my second time staying at this location. Great apartment and great hosts! Thanks for everything!
We had a mixed experience at this apartment. It is a goof price, although you have to take into account that the cost of renting in Cuzco is very low - like a furnished apt. for $350 a month or so. But still, the price was good for us. It was difficult to communicate with the host as it took multiple emails to hear back from him. Initially, we had wanted the one bedroom apt. but it was not available, so I asked for 2 beds in the studio (which I was told yes). When we got there, there was only one bed, and the owner had to scramble to get us another. The owner was initially friendly with beautiful flowers on arrival and she showed us where the market was and gave us a map. She said she would bring us fresh sheets and towels a week into our stay and she did not. We bundled ours up and left them for her to exchange one morning and by afternoon phoned, but still no sheets or towels. We went a night without any because she did not bring them when she said she would. No apologies either. It felt like we were a nuisance when we asked for anything. We also wanted to meet Travis and find out about living in Cuenca but he clearly was not interested in helping (although initially wrote that he would meet with us). The best thing is that you have your own kitchen to cook, which was really helpful. The apartment also is within walking distance to the main square - about 20 min which is great. The apartment has west facing windows in the ceiling of the kitchen which make it unbearably hot during sunny afternoons. Opening the screen-less windows in kitchen or bedroom leads to flies and bees entering. Bathroom also smelled like sewer at times. Also, we were told that if that bigger apt. opened up we would be informed but the people left a week into our stay and the owner did not let us know. So, a mixed bag.
I really felt at home in this little one bedroom apartment in Cuenca! It has a well-appointed kitchen, plenty of hot water and great wi-fi and even though it's in walking distance of everything, it's removed from the exhaust fumes and noise of downtown traffic. The pictures don't do justice to the charm and attention to detail of this location. Both Travis and landlady Zulma, who lives next door, were very nice and made sure that I had everything I needed.
We had an amazing two weeks in Cuenca. Zelma's place (Travis is her friendly English speaking booking agent) had everything we needed and was spotlessly clean. The bedroom overlooks the street so if you are a light sleeper like myself you will quickly discover that the gas man is an early riser. Thankfully he sleeps in a little on the weekends. Everything from markets, laundromats, bakeries and even a great nail salon are located within a 7 minute walk. The Supermaxi (big American orientated supermarket) is a 10 minute bus ride away - all very easy. There is a great park up the street that is used by the local families in the afternoons and weekends. It's a very safe area of town and everyone was happy to help us figure out the changing bus schedules and point out anything else we might need. Plus, Zelma is just next door if there are any questions you might have. She gave us some great advice about our upcoming travels to Colombia - her country of origin. Our only annoyance was the wifi. It dropped out quite a bit while we were there. However, this was our experience throughout Cuenca, in a couple of hotels we stayed in and also at a friends house. We were told there are updates occurring throughout town. Maybe when they are done the speed will also be better.
Huge Bedroom, Kitchen and View, was, and is, a Huge deal! Large it is, lots of light, firm mattress (my kind of bed!), hot water with good pressure, convenient for walking about town. I met Travis at his office, 1 1/2 blocks away from the apt. He showed me around the neighborhood, where to get laundry done, the produce market, even his favorite vendors, one of whom wishes to marry him and move to Chicago!
Cuenca is a lovely town and the Huge Bedroom apt is a great place to stay while in Cuenca. If I were to go there again, I would definitely book this apt again.
Travis was a dream host. I met him at the designated place and he walked me to the apartment about a block away and then showed me around the neighborhood pointing out the ATM, grocery market, and a great little place for dinner.
The apartment was immaculately clean and beautifully furnished. Zulima had even left a vase filled with fresh cut roses from her garden to welcome me. I felt like I was a visiting friend more than a stranger. The bed is comfortable and the I snuggled under the warm comforter on slow mornings enjoying the 100 cable channels. I know! I had to remind myself that I was in a foreign country and couldn't lounge in bed all day watching movies. There is a big well-appointed kitchen with everything you might need to make your own meals.
The neighborhood is great for walking and it was close enough to be convenient and far enough to be nice and quiet at night. I stayed in the upstairs apartment and it had a great view out over the old town.
This was my favorite place to stay in all of my trip to Ecuador and the price was an outrageous bargain. I kept sending this listing to everyone I met that said they were going to Cuenca.
I would gladly stay in this apartment again. The only note of warning, the water takes a little while to warm up so be patient. Once it gets there it is very hot and consistent.
On my last morning I managed to book the last seat on an early morning flight to Quito and Travis was very gracious and understanding about getting an unexpected wake-up call at 6:30am so I could return the keys.
I was in Cuenca for just under 3 weeks, and stayed at this apartment the whole time.
It was a great experience. Of course, Cuenca itself is wonderful - beautiful, calm, historical, lots to do and see. This apartment is about 10 minutes walk from where the old city begins in earnest. The area itself is more or less consistent with that older part, but not so many colonial buildings. There are many small stores with most of what you need, and a big market just about 5 blocks south that has everything, and at very good prices, so if you plan to cook at home, you're all set.
Getting down to restaurants is also very easy, and I found myself taking a different route everyday: one great thing about this location is you begin with a great view over the roofs of the city, to the mountains beyond, inviting you to walk and explore. To reach the Tomebamba river is 15 minutes, and to do that you traverse the old city, allowing you to see anything you want. It's close enough that I rarely took a cab back to the apartment, and never found the walk a chore. There are lots of great little tiendas and restaurants in the area, and while it is not touristy there, that's got real advantages too.
Travis met me at the school he works at/runs just a couple of blocks away, and was great in getting me into the place. After getting in, though, I was introduced to Zulma, who is the actual owner of the place. She lives next door, was incredibly nice and helpful, and made it clear I could call on her as needed. When the internet went down, she got right on it and had it running again. She oriented me when I got in, and directed me to a great restaurant for my first meal in Cuenca; and had suggestions of what to see and do.
The place lacks a comfortable place to bring people over and sit around, and that's about the only criticism I have of it. It was clean, well sorted out, safe and secure, and everything worked well. I'd certainly recommend it to someone who wants a spacious place to crash, at a very reasonable rate.
This apartment was fantastic! The location is perfect: it's in the city center and within walking distance of just about everything, but it's also on a quiet street with no bus traffic. The bedroom is huge and comfortable. The kitchen is delightfully sunny, and it's fully loaded with cookware and utensils. Travis was incredibly helpful and friendly, and he went out of his way to make us feel at home. We lived here for a month and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
