Montalto Castle lies in one of the loveliest and most unspoiled parts of the Chianti area of Tuscany. It has a rich past dating back over one thousand years. Much of the castle is from medieval times, with restorations of the 16th and 19th centuries.
Our guests share the use of swimming pool and other facilities (like tennis court and raquets, bicycles, a playground, bocce ball and ping pong, Parlour games, books, guides, a common laundry,...)
There are three 1-bedroom villas for rent, each suitable for 1 or 2 people: Scuola, Voliera and San Martino.
SCUOLA was the old school house of the village. All children, regardless of age, studied together in these two rooms. The cottage is just outside the gate, close to the swimming pool. The rear terrace is nestled in the trees and provides a quiet area for reading, dining or relaxing. It is composed by: sitting/dining room with fireplace, small sofa and kitchenette; bedroom with queen-size bed (separable into two singles); bathroom with stall shower.
VOLIERA is our easiest accessed cottage, as it is right off the road and has no steps throughout. It is just outside the walls of the castle, and has a small fenced garden for outdoor eating or relaxing. It is composed by: sitting room with kitchen corner and small sofa; bedroom with queen-size bed; bathroom with shower over tub.
SAN MARTINO is a small tower over the gate to the main castle courtyard -- the perfect nest for honeymooners. Downstairs there is a sitting room with fireplace and a mini-kitchenette (cooking facilities are minimal since there's very little space in that romantic little tower). A spiral wooden staircase leads upstairs where you can find a bedroom with queen-size bed and a bathroom with stall shower (no tub). There's a stone table under spreading linden tree in upper courtyard for outdoor eating or relaxing.
The estate has a swimming pool, tennis court, bocce ball court, laundry facilities and private garden areas. Enjoy the independence of a self-catering villa with all the advantages of a concierge's assistance.
There are many activities you can do right here at Montalto. Included in every villa rental:
•Maps of the many trails through fields and woods around the castle
Our swimming pool is 6x12 meters (20x40 ft) and has a deep end. We also have a bocce court for sand bowling and a covered ping-pong table. You are welcome to play tennis on our (old) court, which has a surface of synthetic grass and sand, and if you prefer asphalt or clay there are tennis clubs in Siena that accept temporary guests.
For health and wellness, we have miles of trails and dirt roads for walking and jogging, on and around our 700-acre estate, and a small work-out bench with weights for exercising.
Right on the border of the Montalto estate is an excellent horse-back riding school and equestrian center, where lessons in English mount and jumping are available, and interesting guided tours on horse-back through the countryside are organized daily. They also have a summer camp for children in June.
Interaction with Guests
We try to invite every guest for tea in the great hall. This gives you the opportunity to see the frescoed hall of arms, hear about the history of Montalto, and meet other guests that are staying with us.
We can also arrange for cooking lessons or italian language lessons upon request; contact us a few days ahead of time to book these.
The area of Tuscany around Montalto Castle is beautiful and peaceful but also very rich in history, art, good food and good wine. With its rich past dating back over one thousand years, the castle provides a truly unique setting for a vacation in Tuscany.
Montalto castle is the ideal home base for interspersing quiet days of rest and relaxation with interesting local excursions, because there is so much within reach: Siena, Florence, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Cortona,... This is a great way to get to know a country in depth, and far more relaxing than an exhausting whirlwind tour of Italy.
Whether you are interested in art and culture or want to sample the local food and world-famous Chianti and Brunello wine, or to relax and rejuvenate with a day at a spa, you will find it all in the area surrounding the castle.
There is too much to list in a single page, so we’ve gathered some information and we always try to keep up to date on the many thingsto do in the surroundings, such as concerts, special events, etc.
Simply ask and we will be happy to provide the assistance you may need in planning your vacation.
You will need a car. There is no convenient public transportation to the Castle. If you wish, we can arrange an auto rental with pick up at the airport, at the train station or even directly at the castle.
Though located in one of the loveliest and most unspoiled parts of the Chianti area of Tuscany, Montalto is very accessible:
The major Italian highway (A1, the "Autostrada del Sole") is 30 km / 19 miles away: exits Valdarno to the north and Valdichiana to the south (see Driving directions).
The Florence airport is less than 1½ hours away. The Pisa airport is about two hours away, while the drive from the Rome airport takes three hours.
There are train stations at 12 km / 7 miles (Rapolano, for trains to the south) and at 18 km / 11 miles (Bucine, for trains to the north).
The nearest town, Castelnuovo Berardenga, is 10 km / 6 miles away, but there is a restaurant less than 3 km / 2 miles from Montalto and a village at 5 km / 3 miles.

Stay here and you could give this host their first review!
Montalto Castle has long been family owned, first by the Berardenga family, then Palmieri, and finally by Giovanni and Diana Coda-Nunziante who acquired it from relatives in 1970. Since Giovanni’s death in January of 2014, Diana carries on with my assistance. I look after our guests’ needs and can give a wealth of information about local opportunities. Like Diana I speak English and Italian, fairly fluent French, some German and a little Spanish.
Some of you may remember me from several years ago, when I used to work as receptionist at Montalto before my two children were born. Now I am very happy to be back, as I truly love this place and enjoy meeting the interesting people who come here. Diana is happy, too!
