Where you’ll be

Irwin, Idaho, United States

Other than our own house, the area is sparsely populated with scattered occasional-use summer cabins. The closest year-round residents are a couple of miles away. Essentials are available in the town of Alpine, 12 miles southeast (restaurants, supermarket, clinic, pharmacy, banks, sporting goods, hardware, etc.).

In the summer and fall, for those that like hiking, there are numerous hiking trailheads into the national forest within just a few miles - locations are shown on the displayed map if you zoom out a bit.

For winter sports, we are just over an hour from ski areas at Grand Targhee, Jackson Hole and Snow King. Dog sled rides to Granite Falls hot springs is also just over an hour away. Snowmobile rentals are available 14 miles away at Alpine with hundreds of miles of groomed trails accessible in both WY and ID.

I am a retired professor from Empire State College, where I taught management and leadership courses in their MBA program. While with Empire State, I also participated in an International Program where I taught Middle-Eastern students (most were Lebanese, but some were from surrounding countries.) My husband, Larry, is a retired finance manager from Electric Boat Corp. We enjoy snowmobiling, nordic skiing, boating, day hiking (backpacking is somewhat behind us now), and just maintaining our 13 acre piece of the forest. Now that I am retired from teaching, I enjoy painting. Several of my paintings add to the ambience of the cabin.

When we lived in Idaho Falls (in the 1970s and 80s), we spent many weekends backpacking and camping in the Gros Ventre, Teton, Caribou and Snake River ranges. The mountains of the “Greater Yellowstone” area became our “Sacred Space” because of the beauty and memories.

We moved to upstate NY in 1988, but always had a desire to head back west. Every summer from 1994 to 1999, we would book airfare to somewhere in the intermountain west (Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, etc.), rent a car, and head for a national forest with backpacking tent, sleeping bags and some cooking utensils in one suitcase and some clothing in another. Every morning we would break camp, drive into the nearest town, visit a realtor and get a map of potential land that met our criteria, drive to each one and then on to another campground.

In 1999, after a search through Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, we decided to see what might be available in our old hiking grounds back around Palisades. We stopped in at a local realtor, described what we were looking for, and he took us 6 miles up the road to show us two adjacent parcels, both for sale by the same owner. We made an offer to buy both parcels later that afternoon (July 2). It was accepted on July 3rd and we camped there on July 4th for our 17th anniversary.

In 2006, we installed a cabin as our vacation home. In 2013 we built our retirement home on the 2nd parcel. After renting the cabin for the 2015 summer to some new Swan Valley residents, we decided to go with AirBnB as a way of sharing the "Sacred Space" that we have loved for 40 years.
