Our basement studio is located a couple of blocks off Alberta street, in the heart of the Alberta Arts District, within walking distance to North Williams area, 2.5 miles from downtown, and surrounded by some of Portland’s finest restaurants & bars.
Our studio is constructed with reclaimed materials and has many handmade accents. It has a private kitchen and bathroom with:
* Hot plate
* Electric kettle
* Coffee maker
* French press
* Green Tea and Coffee
* Toaster, and all the other kitchen essentials
The bathroom comes well equipped with:
* Hair dryer
* Iron and ironing board upon request
There is a very comfortable queen size bed (reviews will lead you to believe it may be the best thing about the Zen Den) that will put you right to sleep. The leather euro lounger also folds out into a full size futon bed with a pillow top. The 48-inch plasma, our sweet selection of DVD's, basic cable, and a Roku player with a streaming Netflix account and many Roku stations, will keep you entertained (not that you will ever run out of things to do in Portland).
If that is not enough our beautiful back yard with blueberries, figs, apples, and tomatoes, sprinkled between bamboo and Japanese Maples is a zen retreat in it's own right.
We do have 2 cats that live in the main house and backyard. * They will never be in your private studio. If you do like cats, they would be more than happy to get a belly rub from you, if you are so inclined.
Because we believe in being as sustainable as possible we took great care to use as many reclaimed and green materials as possible. We also kept the original structural accents. We believe in clean air and used no VOC paint throughout, as well as water based sealers for the wood accents. To top it off we also use only Salmon friendly green power from wind, solar, and geothermal.
Guests can spend time in our Japanese style backyard with fire pit; use the washer and dryer; and enjoy plenty of street parking with no time limits.
Interaction with Guests
Feel free to hang out with us in the back yard anytime! We are also happy to give you directions or recommendations to local restaurants, bars and attractions.
If you are looking to stay in the Alberta Arts District, you probably already know we are a hub for creativity. We have some of the best food, coffee, beer, spirits, and handmade artisan goods made right here in our neighborhood. We also have much history, being one of the oldest neighborhoods in Portland. Our neighborhood has gone through many transitions, but has withstood the test of time. Houses were originally built here in the early 1900's and most houses here were built before 1910.
Located 2 blocks off Alberta and the same distance from the 6 bus line to downtown, the river and the Pearl District, our remodeled basement studio is the perfect zen-base for your Portland visit. A five minute drive to New Seasons market (a local, organic grocery store), and a 10 minute walk to the Alberta Street Co-op grocery (another local, organic grocery store). We are only 15 minutes to the airport, and downtown Portland. And even if you want to spend time outdoors Forest Park is a 20-minute drive and Multnomah Falls is 45-minutes drive. Basically you will be so close to everything, no time will be wasted on this trip!
Visit on the last Thursday evening of any summer month to experience the street-party atmosphere of the neighborhood’s art gallery walk. This is a circus of art, music, performance, and great street food!
If you are coming to Portland to eat and drink, our home puts you within walking distance of some of Portland’s finest restaurants, including: Beast, Pine State, Aviary, Podnahs, Bernie's, Branch Whiskey Bar, Yakuza, Autentica, Tasty and Sons, Kenny and Zukes, La Bonita, Natural Selection, Grilled Cheese Grill and more; coffee houses including: Barista, Ristretto Roasters, Caffe Vita, Extracto, Case Study; bakeries: Tula (gluten free) Dovetail, Random Order, Le Petit Provence, Back to Eden, and the Sugar Cube; bars including Alberta Street Public House, The Box Social, Radio Room, and The Bye and Bye; and one of Portland's famous farmers markets just 2-bocks away. Oh, and don't forget Salt & Straw Ice Cream! You will want to go back everyday :-)
Our studio is also within easy walking distance to the up and coming North Williams area with restaurants like Kenny and Zukes, Box Social, Tasty and Sons, Lompoc, Ristretto Coffee, and Lincoln.
We are within 15-minutes of the airport for a cost of $25. Trimet transit will take you East, West, North or South and is within 2 blocks of the studio. There are also Zipcar locations on 6th and Alberta, and 21st and Alberta with plenty of cars to choose from; Car2Go is also available. Seriously, we do have a couple things that we ask of you. Due to insurance considerations we do not allow guests to bring friends over during their stay. We are sorry for this but due to insurance, and safety issues we can not allow you to have guests during your stay. Please do your best to respect both us and our neighbors by trying to observe a quiet time after midnight. What we mean by this is being respectful of the noise you make both inside and outside our home after midnight. Just think would my neighbors be okay with what I am doing after midnight? If the answer is yes then all is well.
Hosts were great! They gave us complete privacy during our stay. We ran into them on our way out a couple times, super friendly people. The room was cozy and perfect for the 3 of us who stayed. The futon is comfy, but the bed is more comfy for you light sleepers :) They're cat(s) are so cute and friendly! They might meow at your door for a hello, which we were okay with since we're animal lovers.
We has everything we needed and more. The neighborhood was VERY quiet and just a couple blocks away from Alberta St, which has a bunch of great spots for shopping, food, drinks, etc.
Our hosts were friendly and very accommodating for us. Both for our late arrival and a switch out of guests mid stay. The Zen Den was quiet, private, and warm. Lots of local info and help when needed.
Walking distance to everything fun on Alberta street and really easy to get around by bicycle as well. Would definitely recommend them for anyone coming into Portland!
The room was spacious and quiet. Located close to town with great bicycle access. Our hosts were great! Definitely recommend this place.
Erika & Spencer were great hosts, made the Studio very easily accessible and had all the amenities ready for us upon our arrival. They were extremely accommodating with the odd hours that we arrived and departed. The space was very nice and well kept, really comfortable for the three of us. Would definitely love to stay here again for a future trip to Portland.
Fantastic accommodation, this was a great spot to stay. Comfortable and very clean with everything you needed to stay in or explore the local area.
Instructions were clear with excellent host communication. This was great considering a late arrival to the property. Even two beers in the fridge were much appreciated after a long drive!
Erika and Spencer'a place was great, and they were extremely accommodating. My friend arrived in Portland a little earlier than me so they let her leave her bags there before the check in time, and we spent two nights in this cozy apartment. It was easy to get places on public transportation. Also, they have the cutest cats!
Hello! We are a husband and wife team who very much enjoy making our studio available to people visiting Portland. We love to travel and love nothing more than staying with a great Airbnb host. We like the way it makes you feel right at home in a new location. Plus, it is a really fun way to meet new people.
We have been quite a few places, such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Spain, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Hungary, Croatia, Belgium, Germany and of course Canada.
Living in Portland, we love all types of food, and great local beer. Spencer likes IPA's, and I love Sour Beers. We also both love live music, and enjoy going to festivals such as Music Fest NW in the Fall, and Bumbershoot in Seattle.
We enjoy being around positive, fun people, and simply doing the things that makes us happy :-)
