The Space

The Grand Canyon Eco Villa is a stunning and unique private 2 bedroom house. This eco-friendly rental house located in Nyuh Kuning Village is a quiet, modern oasis surrounded by a natural pond and lush greenery. The “green lung” of the Monkey Forest separates the village from the busyness of Ubud.
Relax in this fully furnished, spacious-feeling home. Amenities include:
•Free WIFI
•Open living room and dining room
•Entertainment-focused kitchen
•Air-conditioners in BOTH BEDROOMS
•Both bedrooms SHARE ONE bath
•Antique teak wood joglo guest room (shares bath with master bedroom) with fan
•Small desk area in master bedroom
•Two bicycles
•Drinking water provided

Built by local artisans from Nyuh Kuning Village and features natural, local bamboo, ironwood bridges, teak furnishings and stone with modern terrazzo architectural finishes.

It’s minimal footprint living with:
•Sustainable 'rammed earth' walls reminiscent of the Grand Canyon
•Grey water filtered through a tropical sand bed and returned to the pond
•Rain water harvested to the pond

If you're interested in more of the green details:

Housecleaning is provided six days per week. Transportation from the airport and local sightseeing can be arranged.

The property is very much designed for outdoor living to take advantage of the 75-90 degree year round temperatures. There are 2 bedrooms: 1 is under the main roof of the house and the other is a small antique wooden joglo that serves as bedroom number 2; both rooms have KING sized beds & hotel-quality sheets and bedding.

This rents as ONE HOUSE for one or two couples who know each other well because the bathroom is shared.

It's also in the heart of the Nyuh Kuning village, it's not hermetically sealed like a five-star room at the Four Seasons so sometimes it's possible to hear a few things above the murmur of the two fountains, e.g. fish splashing in the pool, frogs croaking at night, birds, chickens and the occasional motorbike.
Note: There are pools on three sides of the living space reminiscent of being on a boat that are filled with many, many fish. Some parents must decide if they feel comfortable in a house with so much water around it and whether it is appropriate for their own.

The house is NON-Smoking.

Guest Access

My cleaning lady will clean every day except Sunday from 9 am - 11/12 unless you make other arrangements because you want morning privacy for meditation/yoga. She speaks English pretty well. Several days before arriving in Ubud please let me know what time you plan to arrive and whether you need transportation. I can give you the email addresses for a driver it's about 300,000 Rp. ($28)

Interaction with Guests

I live in Seattle and will coordinate the guest's stay with you from a distance via email. I am in constant communication with the cleaning lady. Luhnik is great and is one of the main reasons I have a 5-star rating. If she goes out of the way for you, for example: takes you on her motorbike occasionally, cleans for you on a Sunday (her day off), takes you to a temple, goes to the market for you, watches your children, arranges a bicycle tour, helps you rent a third bicycle, or basically does anything special for you please consider giving her a tip of 50,000 Rp. or $4/week, or 20,000 Rp. for petrol for motorbike ride to Ubud or Sukawati market. Many guests did not give her anything for all of these extra things which is not fair.
Also note that my house is FOR SALE. If you are staying there my realtor and housekeeper may ask if they can bring a potential buyer to the house with advance notice. To give you an idea, 2 people have looked at it in the last 2 months. THANKS for your understanding!

The Neighborhood

In 2013 Nyuh Kuning was named the safest, cleanest village in INDONESIA by the Jakarta government. The rain channels (subak) on the streets are empty and clean of debris and lined with frangipani (jepun) flowering trees. These Balinese residents were voted as having the highest sanitary standards.

It’s possible to walk on the flat, village lane from the house through the small village of Nyuh Kuning to central Ubud on a road that has very little traffic.
Even though Nyuh Kuning village is about 600 meters on the other side of central Ubud there is no road for cars to connect the two only a walking/bicycle/motorbike path. As a result, Nyuh Kuning is the quietest and closest place to Central Ubud.

Getting around

My house is a 15-25 minute walk through this safe quiet road (or 5-10 minute bike ride...there are 2 bicycles) away for dining, shopping, etc. Note that walking involves going through the Ubud Monkey Forest which is safe but not well lit at night so you need a flashlight/torch if walking (I ride my bicycle with a headlamp...the monkeys are sleeping at night :-)).
From my house to Yoga Barn is an 8 minute bike ride there for me and it is roughly 1 km. (6/10 of a mile) between the epicenter of central Ubud to my house.

Other Things to Note

Bali VISA ON ARRIVAL: Effective July 3, 2014 fee increase from $25 USD to $35 USD. If you are coming to Bali as a visitor to Bali for less than 30 days (and don't already have a visa for Indonesia in your passport obtaineed from your home country), you are required to buy one on arrival before getting into the Passport Control queue.
FOOD: There are no meals included, this is a single family house. The cleaning lady has not been trained on how to cook western style breakfasts, etc. which are very good and available at nearby Cafe Coffee & Copper or in Ubud at several places like Kafe at the Yoga Barn, Clear cafe, Down To Earth or Bali Buddha for less than $5.
There are many places to eat in Ubud, i tend to favorite ones that offer local, organic and healthy choices but not all visitors like that style. In Nyuh Kuning i eat often at basic Cafe Coffee & Copper in Nyuh Kuning village at the entrance to the actual monkey forest that separates Ubud and Nyuh Kuning. On Jalan Nyuh Kuning there is a japanese-style nasi campur called Warung Sopa where you can select local rice and pick 5 buffet items like curried banana flower, fern tips, tofu, beet salad. Down to Earth in Ubud is all vegetarian and super healthy/fresh. The Ubud working coop center with hyper fast email for expats who work in ubud called Hubud near the monkey forest also (email hidden) and vegan food. Healthy comfort food can be found at Little K cafe inside the Yoga Barn or Kafe or Clear Cafe or Bali Buddha. Taco Casa has awesome tex mex food. Jalan Monkey forest road has the majority of tourist/western food choices. Higher end is Mozaic...for a 6 course meal with the best service in bali is $75 per person where the chef trained at the French Laundry in Napa Valley, CA and it's awesome. Indonesian/western blend food at Janet deNeff's Casa Luna is a nice place as is Terrazzo for Italian. There is an awesome new Indian restaurant a few doors down from the main Palace.
There are more touristy foods with western food like Nomads or for pretty good and definitely reasonably priced French food i like Cafe Des Artistes.

  • MIchael was a great host to me before and during my stay at his beautiful villa. He was very attentive and prompt with assistance when requested. The villa is very unique, bringing the outdoors inside, which gave me a sense of adventure. The village where the villa is located, is very neat and comfortable and not at all far from the main tourist spots in Monkey Forest Road, Ubud. You can walk or use the bicycles provided by Michael. His housekeeper is excellent and goes out of her way to help. She is a very pleasant lady and is a great source of information on where to go and what to do. She can also help arrange transports and tours around the island. If you want a unique setting, this villa fits the bill. Highly recommended. I will definitely return.

  • What an amazing stay we had at Michaels Eco-villa. It was perfect for two couples. Walking distance to everything including Ubud's performances which Luhnik set up for us. She also set up a ride to Sanur for the next part of our journey. We did not cook in the house but it is definitely set up for that. We ate at many restaurants which were all within walking distance. Hot water was a plus and we enjoyed the outdoor space. A plus was having to bicycles at the house. Thank you for a great stay can't wait to visit again.

  • Michael was a great host. He communicated well and was very prompt with responses. He was extremely helpful in providing recommendations and contact information for transportation to get to and from the residence, which was helpful since it's a bit hard to communicate the location to other taxis. The villa was a bit off the beaten path in more of a residential area of Ubud, but my friend and I enjoyed that about the residence - staying in downtown Ubud would have been a bit chaotic, I think (very busy streets). We used the bikes provided to commute to and from the town which we enjoyed very much. The villa itself was very nice. My friend and I were split between the two different rooms so I can speak for both of the rooms when I say they are comfortable and cool down quickly with the AC units in each of them. It's really a unique place to stay and we enjoyed to outdoorsy aspect of the villa. The housekeeper and her family were also helpful to us in answering questions and helping arrange transportation for us. Additionally, Michael provided great recommendations for places to eat, which we referenced a lot of the time. Overall it was a great stay and we would definitely recommend staying in this Eco villa. We certainly felt like it was extremely valuable for what we paid!

    Response from Michael:

Thanks Jennifer, we enjoyed having you. We listened to your idea and this week upgraded the electric wattage at the house so that the new air conditioner in the second bed room can be on at the same time as the one in the main bedroom. I've also given the bicycle combination number to the housekeeper so she has that available for other conscientious guests like you wanting to lock up the bicycle. I will replace the lightbulb on one of the bicycles. Thanks for the tips.

  • I found the space for my mom and aunties on AirBnb. Michael was prompt and super helpful- which was important since it is the first time the three womenare traveling by themselves. They loved the stay and told me the helper was great at helping them out and making sure they are going to the right places. They also love how the place is quiet and their daily scooter rides into the city.

We loved hosting your mother and aunties. Thanks for communicating so many times in advance so it all went smoothly for your family while they were here. I'm glad the housekeeper easily arranged motorbikes for the three of them.

  • Michael's place was perfect!!! Me and 2 friends stayed here in May and we loved everything about our stay. Michael was always in contact with us and before we arrived he informed us we were going to be there during Galungan, which was an amazing experience. He had arranged for us to go to the temple with Luhnik (the housekeeper). I would recommend everyone to stay here it will make your stay that much better. Also the walk to Ubud centre is not very far and very entertaining walking through Monkey Forest everyday!

  • The villa is amazing and the surrounding as well. Perfect place for an enjoyable stay and for trips through central Bali and to the northern part of the island.
The house is really beautiful and very special, the housekeeper (and their whole family) were very friendly and helpful.
Everything was perfect for us, great thanks to Michael, who was very helpful already prior the trip with recommendations for drivers. We enjoyed ur stay very much!

  • My wife and me spent one week in Michael's house, in Bali, May 2014, our first days in Bali ever. It's located amid a neat balinese village, directly bordering Ubud, all amenities present. We like to say thanks to Michael who has a caring and responsible attitude, to Luhnik who was very helpful, any question and problem concerning the house, and to Nyoman Wiono for the transport services and his explanations of Hindu religion and culture on Bali. Btw we learned a lot about rice cropping and harvesting. Michael's house is a unique one, visually and by the architectural concept, It's worth paying a visit and we hope it finds its visitors.

  • I couldn't be happier about my stay at the Eco -villa. It has been awhile since I have stayed at a place that was actually nicer than the pictures showed. I almost didn't want to leave the room to go out and do things. But, when I did head out, I was happy to find town was great and very safe. Plenty of restaurants and things to do within walking distance. Coffee Copper was our favorite restaurant, not just because of the great food, but also because of the great staff working there. They were extremely helpful. Michael was very helpful from start to finish. I was always able to get a hold of him. He gave me great advice about the area and provided a top notch experience. All of the people he has taking care of the villa are also great and we had a great time just talking with them and getting to know them. Our time there has already convinced us to come back. Hopefully sooner than later. Thank you.
