The Grand Canyon Eco Villa is a stunning and unique private 2 bedroom house. This eco-friendly rental house located in Nyuh Kuning Village is a quiet, modern oasis surrounded by a natural pond and lush greenery. The “green lung” of the Monkey Forest separates the village from the busyness of Ubud.

Housecleaning is provided six days per week. Transportation from the airport and local sightseeing can be arranged.
The property is very much designed for outdoor living to take advantage of the 75-90 degree year round temperatures. There are 2 bedrooms: 1 is under the main roof of the house and the other is a small antique wooden joglo that serves as bedroom number 2; both rooms have KING sized beds & hotel-quality sheets and bedding.
This rents as ONE HOUSE for one or two couples who know each other well because the bathroom is shared.
It's also in the heart of the Nyuh Kuning village, it's not hermetically sealed like a five-star room at the Four Seasons so sometimes it's possible to hear a few things above the murmur of the two fountains, e.g. fish splashing in the pool, frogs croaking at night, birds, chickens and the occasional motorbike.
Note: There are pools on three sides of the living space reminiscent of being on a boat that are filled with many, many fish. Some parents must decide if they feel comfortable in a house with so much water around it and whether it is appropriate for their own.
The house is NON-Smoking.
My cleaning lady will clean every day except Sunday from 9 am - 11/12 unless you make other arrangements because you want morning privacy for meditation/yoga. She speaks English pretty well. Several days before arriving in Ubud please let me know what time you plan to arrive and whether you need transportation. I can give you the email addresses for a couple of drivers if needed. Nyoman charges 250,000 Rp ($22 USD) from airport to Ubud: Nyoman Wi Ono
I live in Seattle and will coordinate the guest's stay with you from a distance via email. I am in constant communication with the cleaning lady. Luhnik is great and is one of the main reasons I have a 5-star rating. If she goes out of the way for you, for example: takes you on her motorbike occasionally, cleans for you on a Sunday (her day off), takes you to a temple, goes to the market for you, watches your children, arranges a bicycle tour, helps you rent a third bicycle, or basically does anything special for you please consider giving her a tip of 50,000 Rp. or $4/week, or 20,000 Rp. for petrol for motorbike ride to Ubud or Sukawati market. Many guests did not give her anything for all of these extra things which is not fair.
Also note that my house is FOR SALE. If you are staying there my realtor and housekeeper may ask if they can bring a potential buyer to the house with advance notice. To give you an idea, 2 people have looked at it in the last 2 months. THANKS for your understanding!
In 2013 Nyuh Kuning was named the safest, cleanest village in INDONESIA by the Jakarta government. The rain channels (subak) on the streets are empty and clean of debris and lined with frangipani (jepun) flowering trees. These Balinese residents were voted as having the highest sanitary standards.
It’s possible to walk on the flat, village lane from the house through the small village of Nyuh Kuning to central Ubud on a road that has very little traffic.
Even though Nyuh Kuning village is about 600 meters on the other side of central Ubud there is no road for cars to connect the two only a walking/bicycle/motorbike path. As a result, Nyuh Kuning is the quietest and closest place to Central Ubud.
My house is a 15-25 minute walk through this safe quiet road (or 5-10 minute bike ride...there are 2 bicycles) away for dining, shopping, etc. Note that walking involves going through the Ubud Monkey Forest which is safe but not well lit at night so you need a flashlight/torch if walking (I ride my bicycle with a headlamp...the monkeys are sleeping at night :-)).
From my house to Yoga Barn is an 8 minute bike ride there for me and it is roughly 1 km. (6/10 of a mile) between the epicenter of central Ubud to my house.
FOOD: There are no meals included, this is a single family house. The cleaning lady has not been trained on how to cook western style breakfasts, etc. which are very good and available at nearby Cafe Coffee & Copper or in Ubud at several places like Kafe at the Yoga Barn, Clear cafe, Down To Earth or Bali Buddha for less than $5.
There are many places to eat in Ubud, i tend to favorite ones that offer local, organic and healthy choices but not all visitors like that style. In Nyuh Kuning i eat often at a basic Cafe Coffee & Copper in Nyuh Kuning village at the entrance to the actual monkey forest that separates Ubud and Nyuh Kuning. On Jalan Nyuh Kuning there is a japanese nasi campur called Warung Sopa that's like red rice and picking 5 buffet items like curried banana flower, fern tips, tofu, beet salad. Down to Earth in Ubud is all vegetarian and super healthy/fresh. The Ubud working coop center with hyper fast email for expats who work in ubud called Hubud near the monkey forest also has a salad bar and vegan food. Healthy comfort food can be found at Little K cafe inside the Yoga Barn or Kafe or Clear Cafe or Bali Buddha. Taco Casa has awesome tex mex food. Jalan Monkey forest road has the majority of tourist/western food choices. Higher end is Mozaic...for a 6 course meal with the best service in bali is $75 per person where the chef trained at the French Laundry in Napa Valley, CA and it's awesome. Indonesian/western blend food at Janet deNeff's Casa Luna is a nice place as is Terrazzo for Italian. There is an awesome new Indian restaurant a few doors down from the main Palace.
There are more touristy foods with western food like Nomads or for pretty good and definitely reasonably priced French food i like Cafe Des Artistes.

Michael is very responsive and helpful in giving me the directions and driver's recommendations even though he was not based in Ubud.
The villa is clean and well-maintained though it was a little out of the way from Ubud town. It is really rustic and good for those who want to break away from their hectic busy lifestyle in the city. The people are warm and friendly at the village, and not forgetting there are some great food places at cheap prices.
Just a reminder though that this villa has a open-concept common shower area, so it will be quite awkward & slightly inconvenient for those who value their privacy during shower time. For those who are used to living in the city, remember to bring a torchlight if you have to travel to and fro in the evening, as there aren't many street lights around and it can get quite dark around evening time.
Overall a great and unique experience for a city gal like me!
Staying at the bamboo house was a 'relief' from the overload of images and feelings in Ubud. It feels nice, safe and friendly as beautiful fish are the pets of the house always there waiting for you. The house has interesting design and attention to detail. The village is pretty beautiful with friendly neighbors and is located very close to central Ubud. Michael immediately responded despite the time difference and arranged everything to be ready for us very quickly. He is a very good host although from distance and the house a pleasant and convenient experience. Thank you Michael!
From the first point of contact right through to assisting with a small emergency at the end of my stay Michael was an excellent Host. The property presents even better than the images with interesting bamboo structured architecture located in a peaceful southern part of town. From bikes to clean sheets to mosquito coils... all the right stuff included.
This was my first airbnb experience and it was great! Michael was very helpful with the booking and information about Bali and Ubud. The house was perfect. We were able to relax and enjoyed staying in and reading and cooking as much as we did getting out and exploring. It was really nice to be able to walk to the city center (at least during the day, more of a challenge at night) but to stay in an area that was clean, quiet, and away from the crowds.
We had 4 lovely days in Ubud and such a great house to spend your relaxing time. The wooden house is very special and gave you so many impressions. You have all you need in the house even if we never cooked. The cleaning lady were verry helpful from the beginning and gave all information about the house at the arrival. Don't miss this house if you are going to Ubud!!
Michael's house was awesome. It was really in a great location and very quiet. There was a very nice housekeeper and she cleaned the house daily. The fish were also really fun! The air conditioning was wonderful. We would love highly recommend the modern eco villa to everyone!
Stayed in Michael's eco villa for 1 month over xmas / new year and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Perfectly positioned (for me) in the quiet, pretty, yet central village of Nyuh Kuning. Situated right behind Monkey Forest, it took just 20 mins to walk to the Yoga Barn, giving me the opportunity to get to know the monkey families who congregated around the perimeter path of the forest.
Lunhick, a lovely gentle woman, meticulously cleaned the villa everyday (except Sunday) and I was kept company by the many Koi carp, large and small which swam in the encircling moat pond.
I also really appreciated the large tapped filtered water bottle and the two pushbikes.
Michael responded extremely promptly to all my questions and I really appreciated his advice and overall helpfulness.
I found the monthly rate for such great accommodation extremely competitive.....well worth it!
Thanks Michael, I'll be returning...if you'll have me!
My heart literally leapt when I arrived at Michael's house straight off a 15 hour flight from Europe. With the garden all light up and the fish swirling around the pond and the fountain twinkling - it simply took my breath away.
The house is perfect for just about any kind of visit. If you like you can spend whole days holed up in your own private oasis, reading and tossing food to the fish. The air conditioned bedroom is a blessing to those who struggle with Bali's humidity at night, and the open air kitchen, living room and bathroom are serene and well thought out - a real person's home rather than the usual cookie-cutter bungalow you find in Bali.
The immediate village of Nyuh Kuning has lots going for it - restaurants, cafes, laundry and an amazing ayurvedic centre where you can have an amazing massage and a nice vegetarian dinner. And best of all if you can't be bothered with renting a scooter - central Ubud is a very pleasant 25 minute walk through the shady Monkey Forest away.
Even though Michael was many time zones away - he was very prompt with answering any questions I had. You can just tell he is a good person who wants to ensure you'll enjoy your stay in his house.
All in all a great base for a holiday in Ubud and great value for such a unique and special home.
Staying in Micheal's place was amazing! The open and green concept makes it even more worthwhile. Everything was organic, and the water from the shower and sink flows into a beautiful koi pond that gives the place such a serene feel. However out of 2 rooms, only one is air conditioned and it can get very hot at night in the room without air conditioning. The road is also not known to many (our hiking trip driver got absolutely lost when he had to pick us up). Micheal was very accommodating and provided me with all the information I needed before reaching. The cleaner was there to greet my dad and I when we arrived, and she was extremely helpful in making sure we have everything sorted. This trip was definitely one of the best I've had, and Michael's place definitely contributed to a beautiful experience in Bali. I highly recommend this place to people who appreciates nature.
We loved staying at Michael's apartment in Ubud! The place is in a neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle, which is great, but still close enough to all the action. We rented a moped for the entirety of our stay which was great and helped us get around to all the sites, no issues. Michael's place looks exactly like in the photos and it amazing! He was very communicative leading up to the stay and checked in with us while we were there, even providing us with some references to his local favorite haunts. Very useful! We felt very safe in the area and comfortable in the house. It is true that there are dogs barking a lot at night, but just bring some earplugs and this won't bother you. Great stay, highly recommend!
