The Space

Usually, only the use of the first floor of this 1890's Victorian is currently at your disposal. Please keep that in mind when reading below! It is a perfect weekend retreat from NYC or Philadelphia, especially if you enjoy shopping in the mall at Dickson City or going to Elk Mountain to ski in the winter! For the summer of 2014, the entire house is at your disposal, ask me about pricing!

This is a perfect writers or book lovers or chef's retreat to read some of my 1,000+ cookbooks. The library on the first floor has first editions, travel volumes, a large section of African-Americana. The living room has art/photo/design/decor books. The bedroom has cookbooks. The kitchen has cookbooks mostly related to New York City. The dining room has more cookbooks. About 4,000 volumes all together and constantly increasing!

There is a library, which sleeps one on a twin size futon bed, the living room has a single pullout couch which sleeps one person, the bedroom has a full size bed for a couple. On the second floor is a bedroom with a queen size bed, the living room has a 2-person clic clac sofa and the attic has two single beds. There is also a bathroom on the second floor and an outdoor porch on the second floor as well as a full kitchen and living room on the second floor (more photos of the second floor to follow!)
The house is about 5 miles from Fern Hall at Scottish Glen, a 9-hole fabulous golf course, 16 miles from Scranton PA, home of "The Office" and Olde Good Things which has architectural elements for sale, it is about 20 minutes away from the Endless Mountain Snow area.
So, if you want to explore northeastern Pennsylvania, including visiting towns like Honesdale where there is the Dorflinger Museum which has concerts in the summer, Hawley (great place for antiques), Lake Wallenpaupack and Narrowsburg NY, which has the eagle count each January the third weekend of the month. Summertime there are several small lakes nearby and outlet shops on Route 6 in Dickson City, including a Zabar's like grocery, Wegman's, which is incredible...all about 12 minutes away along the Casey Highway (Route 6).

Please come visit northeast PA!

  • We spent a really great time, we stayed 5 nights at Bernadette's apt. Bernadette was amazing, she is a super friendly and wonderful person she has made us feel welcome in her apartment and in NYC as well. It was the first time for me using the airbnb, she was very helpful and responsive, helped us a lot with tips of where to visit in NYC. It's a nice and cozy apartment, and within walking distance from the Central Park. The neighbourhood is safe and quiet. The bed is comfortable, the kicthen is full equipped, we had clean sheets, clean towels.
Bernadette, thank you again for everything, we loved your place and enjoyed the time we spent there.

  • Bernadette has been a great house before and throughout our stay. She let me see the place before renting, accomodated us to the utmost, kindly stayed in touch for any inquiry and kindly made herself available.

The apartment was neat and quite. The furnitures are new and the bed extremely comfortable. Two sets of towels and were put in the bathroom and everything of need was there (e.g., napkins, filters for the coffee machine, toilet paper, ...) We felt at home.

  • The apt was nice. I am very picky when it comes to bathrooms and showers, I would have preffered a newer/cleaner shower head. But non the less I had a nice stay. Just unfortunate the cable/telephone.internet was out of order during my stay.

  • This was my first experience using airbnb. The location and place were clean and comfortable, fine for my purposes. Alas the internet, tv, and phone were all inoperable for my entire three day stay. The whole airbnb process took significantly more time than booking and using a hotel room, but then it was significantly cheaper. Guess its a tradeoff.

  • Bernadette was incredibly communicative and extremely helpful. The key pickup was easy. The apartment was perfect for our needs. It's a great location and we enjoyed a lot of the neighborhood restaurants.

  • can I put these in words.Bernadette was most amazing with a capital A. she was warm, very personable, caring and took great care that I enjoyed my stay, brewed me tea in the morning, I cannot remember when last someone did that for me, she knew all the fun places and had good tips about everything in the city. The apartment is small but cosy and the view of the east river was most beautiful, internet was accessible, I was in New york to sit exams and have some fun, she encouraged me, I really appreciated the moral support, found time in her busy schedule to text me Goodluck...God bless her soul,
My friends were allowed to visit too...
Took me out for a drink at one of New York's famous bars "Sardis" and the last night of my stay, she invited me to share dinner with her at a beautiful cuban restaurant "Victor's cafe"..the meal was delicious and the ambience of the place great.
She really was like family, I know, I am never going to want to stay at a hotel, if her place is available and I am visiting New York
I can not recommend her enough

  • Bernadette was the most wonderful hostess I have ever encountered. She was extremely personable and went to great lengths to ensure our stay was the best it could be. I felt like we were already friends by the end of mine and my boyfriend's weekend stay (and we didn't even meet face to face!). The apartment could not have been better. We awoke every morning to a gorgeous view of the river and light absolutely floods this beautiful abode. She left us some very good French coffee, assorted teas, and sparkling wine and invited us to use her collection of teacups/teapots. We had access to the internet, cable, and, most importantly, a huge collection of cds (the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong provided the perfect background music to our weekend). It was wonderful to have complete privacy in such a wonderful place. The doorman was very friendly and took care of us, including our friends that stopped by for coffee. Bernadette also has some very cool artwork which sets the tone for a fun, lively apartment. The area is beautiful and safe. Everyone was so friendly and there is a beautiful park nearby. It was so nice to have this gem to come home to everyday. Bernadette is just as amazing as her apartment. We can't wait to go back and visit and cannot recommend this enough!

I am a Native New Yorker (yes, I was born and raised here!) and have lived in Boston, Paris and Los Angeles and speak a bit of French and Spanish and about two words of Italian. I work in the legal field. I went to culinary school to study pastry many years ago and now I just bake cookies at Christmas when I have the time! I have traveled to over 60 countries, go away to my house in Pennsylvania on many weekends and like meeting new people. As to the listings on AIRBNB: I have one "Supersize Studio" on the Upper East Side, which is a walk-up and has no doorman and I do not live there. The building is approximately 50 years old. The entire apartment is at your disposal. There is a queen sized bed, a table and chairs and it is perfect for a sole occupant needing a home-away-from-home. It is in Yorkville, home of the old Austrian and Hungarian and German bakeries, long gone. On Saturdays, at Saint Stephen's, which is opposite the apartment, there is a market which is wonderful. Otherwise, you have more than enough small cute places to eat and hang out and if you are a couple of young single people, all the bars and restaurants you might want to go to until closing are on Second Avenue, one block over. This apartment is a very large studio with high ceilings and faces north to a garden, which is quiet. It comes with linens and dishes and has a small kitchen. There is a $50 cleaning fee and a $100 security deposit required. AIRBNB collects the security and I ask you leave the cleaning fee there in cash. So as to avoid confusion, the second listing, "Paris in New York" location is my home and about which I speak below and this is the apartment which has been reviewed most. My art-filled flat is TINY but as central as you can get in Manhatttan. I am a neat freak since I have lots of little things around the flat and everything has to be put back in the right place. I don't like sloppiness, my home is my refuge. I traveled to Europe the first time on my own via SERVAS many years ago and have not forgotten the kindness of the people I met then. I hope to reciprocate and make new friends! Please contact me if you are interested in staying in Paris in New York! You MUST be a non-smoker but smoking is allowed in front of the building outside if you are desperate. Please have your profile here. It is easier if I know something about who you are, where you live and what you do. If I don't know something about you, it's hard for me to answer a request to stay quickly, since I like to have a level of comfort having someone in my home. I've known one person who lives in Paris and whom I met via SERVAS for over 30 years now. I expect to know my AirBNB guests just as long! After hosting several people, I've realized that it's easiest if my guests sleep on the sofabed in the living room as all my alarms for work are in the bedroom. Thanks for your interest! As to the other listings: the apartment in Paris (Chatelet) is not available again until 1 June 2014. It is rented a minimum of six months. The apartment in Hossegor, in the Southwest of France, is available off-season each year from October until May. The Victorian house in northeast Pennsylvania is available on select weeks if you are interested in skiing at Elk Mountain, which is 20 minutes up the hill on Route 106 from Carbondale. Just ask me about these!
