Named in the Top 10 Airbnb U.S. treehouses, featured in a Seattle Times article about unusual places to stay (11/07/18), ranked in the Top 5 treehouses for Washington (Curbed-Seattle) and voted among “Best Northwest Escapes” by Seattle KING5 viewers, this grown-up sanctuary is nestled in the trees high over the sea, bordered by trees, trails and fabulous ocean overlooks. This place is for grown-ups who seek peace and adventure.

The space
A 40-minute ferry ride brings you to Lopez, the “Friendly Isle", part of the beautiful San Juan Islands, famous for its pastoral settings, working farms, fabulous views and active arts community.

Nestled on a cliff in the trees high above Upright Head Channel, this beautiful treehouse is a retreat for those who want to commune with nature in a quiet setting. It faces the ocean, affording stunning sunset views and a front row seat to ferry and ocean vessel traffic. The property is bordered by the Upright Head Preserve, a 26-acre wonderland of trails and mossy, ocean overlooks.

The treehouse itself is brand new, but designed to look and feel like it's been in the trees for a 100 years. Celtic designs in the woodwork, natural edge slabs of trees for counters and the desk, antique boxes for storage and an old, well-loved rocker make this a beautiful, cozy place to relax.

Built with comfort and safety in mind by local designer, Tom Froning of Soundesign, the platform on which the treehouse rests is suspended between two large Douglas Firs and was planned and put in place using specially designed metal beams that allow the treehouse to rock in the wind like a ship at sea. Good for the trees and peaceful as a mother's arms.

Walk to the treehouse from the driveway across the suspended bridge. The treehouse is not recommended for people with mobility issues. From the moment you take over the treehouse until you check out, access to the bridge and treehouse is closed to others. Even the owners will be required to get permission to cross the bridge (unless there is an emergency!) before crossing over.

Step onto the forest-side deck to the porthole door. To the right of the door is an outside shower. Inside is a small bathroom and a galley kitchen leading to a lovely paneled open area with a cathedral ceiling, a chandelier and windows on all sides. A built-in desk, made from a slab of Douglas fir, and comfortable chair beg you to sit and write or work on a project by the window overlooking the ocean. A rocking chair sits in the corner where windows meet, a perfect place to sit and read.

In the loft is a queen sized, memory foam bed with a view to fabulous sunsets across the water and over Shaw Island. Luxury linens and a down quilt make it a cozy retreat.

The treehouse has a strict two night minimum stay requirement. Due to the element of danger inherent in a treehouse, no children under 12 are permitted.

Reservation Heads-Up!
Please be aware that we do not automatically accept reservations as they arrive. It is important to us that people who request a reservation understand the finer points (safety, mostly) of staying in a treehouse. If you make an inquiry about a reservation or request a booking, you will receive a message from us asking you to consider whether you understand certain variables that could effect your stay. We require an affirmative answer to these questions prior to accepting a booking. AirBnB requires that we respond within 24 hours of your initial contact or our host score is lowered. That means you need to respond to our questions quickly. If you should miss the window to respond, it is an easy matter to re-request your dates and we will book you ASAP.

ROAD SAFETY
Most of our island's dirt roads require a 15mph or less speed, even on our little end-of-the-world road, Hilltop Way. Please don't drive faster than that on the local roads. If you can see a dust cloud trailing you, you are traveling too fast!Walking or biking, you will appreciate it as cars pass you and everyone who has children or deals with road dust will bless you. Good karma will follow you!

Guest access
Guest are invited to wander as they wish along the land adjacent to the cliff by the ocean (please think of your safety) and through the adjoining Upright Head Preserve. The treehouse is a guest house adjacent to a large log home. Walk where you wish on our acreage, the Uprighthead Preserve and our road, but do not wander onto private property. We all love the feel of “splendid isolation”.

Even during the warmest days, the sea air and winds coming off the ocean can make for chilly evenings. Please plan to bring a sweatshirt or sweater to stay cozy. Please stay aware of property boundaries.

Other things to note
The treehouse has a microwave and refrigerator (cooking is very restricted - it's a treehouse!), a fully plumbed toilet in a small bathroom inside and an outdoor shower out on the forest side deck.

During your stay
The treehouse is intended to be a place of peace and quiet. You can shut yourself off from the rest of the world with no phones, TV or any contact with the outside world. From the moment you check in until the time you check out, the treehouse, starting at the suspension bridge is yours alone.

If you want to know where to go for a great meal or to pick up a new (or old!) book, Sean and Bob are enthusiastic about the island and all it has to offer. They can tell you about lovely hikes and walks to some of the most beautiful views in the world. They live in the main cabin, which is next to the treehouse and are only a phone call or text away, if needed.
