About This Listing
A great place for larger groups who want to visit the area. I include up to 4 tickets to Monterey Bay Aquarium. Close to Highway 1, my home is spacious and comfortable. Pool table, ping pong, Xbox, movies...plenty to keep your group entertained.
Affordable Home, Centrally Located for Visitors
My house is ideally suited for larger groups and includes up to 4 tickets to the Aquarium (at $40 each, that can save you $160). Plenty of things to do at the house, bbq, pool table, ping pong, Xbox Kinect. Great location for visiting Monterey and more. Well-behaved pets are welcome. As an owner, I’m pretty easy-going and flexible. If you’re interested, please keep reading.
THE LONGER STORY…
My house accommodates up to 8 comfortably (I've had a few groups even larger than that with some people sleeping on air beds. Keep in mind there is only one bathroom). Your house-broken pet is welcome to stay. I respond to most inquiries very quickly.
With the Aquarium tickets, if you stay one weeknight, I include two tickets (with two more available at $25 each). If you stay more than one weeknight or one Fri or Sat night, I inlcude 4 tickets.
Located in Castroville, a small working-class town of about 10,000 people, my home is just 3 miles from Moss Landing beach, and about 15 minutes from beautiful Monterey.
Located very close to Highway 1 (but not so close you hear any noise), this is a great jumping off point to get away for quick trips to Monterey, Salinas, Big Sur, and Santa Cruz. (Personally, I love to kayak and hike at Elkhorn Slough, which is only 3 miles away).
There are plenty of fun activities in the house including a pool table, ping pong, Xbox 360 with Kinect and games, dartboard, large flat-screen TV with a supply of DVDs you’re welcome to watch. There is a small yard and a driveway that kids can use for play. Speaking of kids, there’s a GREAT library one block away and a park/skate park/recreation center one block away. Just steps from the house, there is a mini-market, meat market, and a Mexican restaurant across the street if you don’t feel like cooking. If you do feel like cooking, I have all of the standards pots, pans, cooking machines, and utensils. If you want to cook, I can provide you a detailed list of everything I have that you can use. I have a new bbq and you're welcome to borrow my small cooler to take to the beach.
The house enjoys plenty of semi-private parking (shared with my neighbor who doesn’t really use it) and, while it’s in a residential neighborhood, it is recessed from the street and other houses so it feels a bit more secluded. There are three bedrooms in the house. If you need it, two guests could sleep in the living room on an Aerobed (which I can lend you at no extra charge).
Full use of the house includes:
x Kitchen with gas stove, microwave and refrigerator. Cooks welcome!
x Living/dining room
x New laminate floor throughout kitchen/dining area, hallway and new carpet in bedrooms (finally got this done!)
x Outdoor garden area with deck chairs
x Bathroom: All linens and towels included
x Garage with washer and dryer and room for your bicycle, golf clubs, surfboard or extra stuff.
x Television in the living room (it’s not currently hooked up to cable, but it has a DVD player). I have an HDMI cable which I can lend you for connecting your device to the TV.
x Massage chair and foot massager!
x Keyboard, if you have any pianists who want to entertain
Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman’s Wharf, surfing, scuba diving, kayaking, bike riding, whale watching. Big Sur, Point Lobos hiking, Esalen, Wine tasting in Carmel Valley. Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay, Carmel, 17 Mile Drive, Santa Cruz (including the famous Beach Boardwalk).
Summer is moderately warm and sunny (although we’re only one mile from the ocean, so sea breezes keep things temperate)
Fall is our Indian Summer – our best weather.
Note: check in/out times can be flexible, depending on other rentals and my schedule. Please ask if you need alternate check in/out times.
Interaction with Guests
I tend not to be here to greet you because I'm usually at work or away. I leave the key and instructions so you can arrive whenever it's most convenient for you. If you’re staying longer and want me to swing by, I’m happy to do that and offer my suggestions on anything local you want to know about.
It's a working-class neighborhood in an agricultural town (Castroville - Artichoke Capital of the World). It's safe but don't expect Beverly Hills! Many guests have liked the "authentic" feeling to it. There are lots of Mexican markets within a few blocks walking distance. Personally, I like that.
There are buses, but this isn't the greatest place for using public transit. You should have a car.
You are welcome to smoke outside. House-trained pets are not a problem, and there's a small lawn for them. Please just treat my home as you would treat your own (which is treating it well, right?). :-)
It was a fun place. Small town but big heart. That's why it is wrapped with artichokes.
Paul was the perfect host. We had a great time as a family. His house was just right for the six of us and he made sure that we felt welcome. If you ever find yourself in the Santa Cruz - Monterrey area, I would highly recommend seeing if this place was available. We would love to come back when we have more time to spend.
I appreciate Paul's quick response and warm welcome! He was very descriptive about the place and very informative with his details of the house. Location is a little interesting... look for the red fence! WiFi was really slow and didn't work that well even in the back room but I guess it was a good thing because it forced us to talk to each other instead of going on our phones.
Paul was very friendly and welcoming. The house was not too hard to find and was pretty clean. The house could use some renovating and is not in the best of areas but its good for the location being within 15 mins to Monterey. Wifi only works in the back so hopefully he will get that fixed. Overall, I would stay here again. We left a half bottle of scotch in the freezer. Enjoy paul!
Although we did not get to meet Paul, we had a wonderful stay at his house. His description was right on the money. We had plenty of room and the kids played Xbox while we cooked dinner. After the kids fell asleep we played pool and darts in the garage which was great to
Have available after walking nearly 6 miles on the beach. The kitchen was equipped with all the kitchen gadgets and small appliances we needed and more. Paul let us know the Internet only worked in the back room but we had no problem using the Internet on our phones throughout the house and in the yard.
Overall we had a great time in the house and visiting all the beaches that were less than 20 minutes from address some even closer!! Big thanks to Paul for sharing his house and we hope we can return soon!
I had a great experience at Paul's house! Before our stay, Paul was really helpful in giving me suggestions for where to go. It was easy to check into the home and check out. His house is large and great for big groups because of the large living room and kitchen. It is a drive to Santa Cruz or Carmel, but it is in a nice and quiet neighborhood. Thank you Paul for your great communication and quick replies!

About the Host, Paul
I am a local businessperson who works and travels frequently and would like someone to enjoy my home when I’m not there. Maybe that’s you and your family/friends?
Personally, I love studying languages (fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and I fake my way through a few others) travelling (Brazil!), reading. Someone asked me recently what my hobbies were and I included "work." Isn't that a sign of a twisted mind? :-)
