We had realy a great time on Ernestos place. Also we three came from a longdistance-trip and felt extremely tired and dirty Ernesto and Toni welcomed us very warm and it was a great start of our Costa Rica Trip. It's definitely a place to recommend and we will try to come back before we leave Costa Rica. Thanks a lot to Ernesto and Toni for taking care about us and helping us for a good start of our journey
My boyfriend and I booked Ernesto's place for a couple of nights at the beginning of our trip to Costa Rica. It was a wonderful introduction to Costa Rica and Ernesto's place is located in the Escazu province of San Jose up in the mountains. We loved it! We had a fantastic view of the city at night, very romantic. Additionally, Ernesto was absolutely amazing! He gave us rides into the city and even helped us book a last minute shuttle to Monteverde, saving us a ton of time during our short visit to Costa Rica.
The only thing that I would point out to anyone looking to book with Ernesto, is make sure your car has 4WD. Going up the mountain in anything else would definitely make for a tough trip. But that shouldn't stop you from staying with Ernesto. He's a wonderful guy and he'll show you a great time in San Jose!
Ernesto's home is very comfortable. The house is hidden in the mountains providing excellent views of San Jose and the surrounding mountains. Since we were there during the rainy season, it was an advantage to watch the clouds roll in and decide which direction to head in the morning to enjoy the sun.
The room was spacious and has a doorless entry to the connecting private bath. The room has a flat screen television which easily connects to a laptop to watch movies on Netflix. As is typical in Costa Rica, if you have trouble sleeping through noise, you will want to bring ear plugs or music as the dogs continually bark through the night and the roosters begin very early in the morning.
Access to downtown San Jose requires planning - give yourself some time. We were fortunate that Ernesto was able to serve as our taxi for the week. He earned a tip to compensate for gas and mileage. In all a nice experience!
Ernesto and Tony were perfect hosts. They were a lot of fun to be with and took care of our needs. They provided us with a very clean room with spectacular views of San Jose in the valley below. The bathroom was clean and fresh towels were always available. We used the washing machine and dryer at the end of our stay so as not to pack dirty cloths.
Breakfasts was always waiting for us each morning. We had coffee and fresh fruit with toast each morning. We declined the offer of eggs. We also kept a few things in the refrigerator for use in the evening with out coffee.
We were offered but declined a ride from the airport but did accept an early morning ride to connect with our Tica Bus.
There is a public bus nearby going to San Jose running about every 30 minutes from 5:30 am to about 10:00 pm. From San Jose, one can connect to everything one might want to find. The ride on the El Llano bus takes a little more than 40 minutes depending on the time of day.
We had an SUV for the first several days. The driveway is very steep and rather rough. I recommend a vehicle with high ground clearance. (An experienced sedan driver with front wheel drive can make it, but needs to be careful to avoid bottoming out. If you are on foot, there is a significant climb up the road to the bus stop. We are in relatively good shape, older but not overweight. We needed to catch our breath on the climb up the hill. Remember that you are up about 5000 feet or more above sea level. The altitude is great for the views and provide cooler, cleaner air, but make hiking a little more of a challenge until one gets used to it.
Wow! Had an amazing time at Ernesto's place. So good we are returning for an extra 2 days in the middle of our Costa Rica vacation. Ernesto made us feel very welcome, it was like being home. Always willing to help out, even served as a hiking expedition guide in the Escazu mountains. He even cooked us a typical Costa Rica meal. Looking forward to returning and spending more time, the view from the house is so amazing. You can just sit out on the balcony, relax and take it all in. I would recommend to everyone. Thanks Ernesto!! A la proxima vez.

Ernesto's home is beautiful. The view is amazing and whole house was very clean. He was a wonderful host, we felt as if we were family. He was generous with his home and fed us so much food, more than we could possibly eat - including his amazing Cuban cooking! Thanks Ernesto, we will definitely let you know the next time we visit Costa Rica :)
