- We use our courtyard to hangout with friends, BBQ and sometimes have movie nights mostly in summer times.

A Little Bit About「Hutong」

The word 'hutong' came from the Mongolian language about 700 years ago. It originates from the word 'hottog' in Mongolian meaning 'water well'. Where there was a spring or well, there were residents. The word 'hottog' became 'hutong' after it was introduced into Beijing.

In the rich and historical culture of Beijing, the hutong has a very special and important position. It is not only a kind of architecture, but also serves as a window into Beijing folk life and an embodiment of the history and culture of Beijing.

Centrally located on the dragon tail which is 5 mins away from Nanluoguxiang subway. It is within walking distance of many cafes, boutiques and historical sites, such as the Forbidden City, JiangShan park, Beihai park, Houhai Lake, the Drum and Bell Tower and Lama Temple. Wandering around the Hutong to is a great way to unfold the history in the Jing.

  • We were very happy with our stay in Nick and Angelas Beijing hutong. The location is amazing and the place has a good atmosphere and is clean etc.
No one were home the first two days we were there, but we got all the information we needed for the house. Nick came back the third day, took us out to a great Chinese restaurant (with their nice neigbour Kelsey) and answered all of our questions about Beijing and gave us some good tips.

  • I had a fantastic time staying at Nick and Angela's place. They were on vacation, but Crystal was a fantastic host. The house was clean and orderly and the room suited my needs perfectly. Having access to a bike was a big plus in such a bike friendly city, and the local phone and subway cards were great extras as well. Crystal provided me with great recommendations for nearby bars and restaurants and had a wealth of information about local history and culture. My only regret is that my stay was so short!

    Hi Roberto,
I just want to touch base and say that I'm thrilled that you had such a great time at our place. It was a real shame that we didn't get to meet you! Fortunately Crystal is a star. I'm glad everything worked out.

    Warm regards,
    Nick and Angela

  • Even though we didn't meet Nick and Angela during our trip to Beijing, we had an amazing time at their apartment in the Hutongs area of the city. Their friend Crystal, who speaks Chinese helped us a great deal: she made sure our bags that were left in Shanghai made it to us quickly, and set us up with a driver to take us to the great wall. The apartment was very nice as well, clean and just as described. Even though there was a heat wave in Beijing, we were very comfortable in the air-conditioned bedroom we had. Nick and Angela also left us a mobile phone and 2 subway cards to use during our stay, which were also great help to us. I can only recommend them and their apartment highly!

    Response from Nick&Angela:

    Hi Julie,
While we were sad that we weren't able to meet you and help you out, it's fantastic that Crystal was there able to help. There's a good reason we asked her to help out while we were gone, she's wonderful!

Safe travels and let us know if you're ever coming back this way.

    Warm regards,
    Nick and Angela

  • We had a great time in the Jingyang hutong courtyard house! It is a veritable oasis in the very center of Beijing city. The livingroom is friendly, the kitchen contains everything you could possibly need, the sleeping room is cosy, as is the bed and the bathroom clean, with plenty of hot water. In addition the guest has the chance to get to know everyday life in a real Beijing siheyuan, sitting outside in the shade of a tree, sipping coffee. We even got to know the neighbors next door.
Nick and Angela are the perfect hosts. We enjoyed a nice evening with Nick in the beergarden of a small brewery in a nearby hutong courtyard. If we have the chance we will surely come back there!

  • Thanks Angela @ Nick for our great stay in Beijing!
Unfortunately we didn`t meet our hosts because they were on holiday, too, but her friend Crystal also took good care of us :). We already received some nice tips and help from Angela before going there and Crystal then managed to get a driver to the Great Wall etc.
We enjoyed our days in Beijing in this central but quiet, very clean, traditional and comfortable appartement. Couldn`t imagine a better place to stay in Beijing! Hope we`re coming back one day ;)...

The place is also really cool. Is super central and is located in a traditional hutong.

  • Beijing is a mysterious and wondrous city - but boy can it be a bit tricky to navigate...without a little help. Nick and Angela made us feel not only welcome, but part of their inner circle from the moment we arrived.
We were whisked to performances, rode together on bicycles, shown great restaurants and given great tips on how to find a legit massage parlour for example.
The location is absolutely perfect in terms of getting to the major sites (Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Houhai Lake, etc. but also close to subway, eateries, breweries and more.
Simon and I couldn't have been happier with our stay and our only hope is that we catch up with this crazy pair again soon.

    Take care,
