The Space

Your spacious room overlooks a redwood forest with a meadow & wooded hills beyond. You may think you want to visit Sonoma County vineyards, beaches, or the Russian River, but once you're here, you may not want to leave. The room is quiet & private. You have your own bathroom called "The Mexi" because of Mexican tiles & mementos of travels in that country. There is safe, off street parking. You are within walking distance of the picturesque village of Occidental where there are good restaurants, gift shops, & tennis courts. People also love to ride bicycles around here even tho the roads are narrow, curvy, & steep. We are early risers & will have coffee ready by 7:00 with a gourmet continental breakfast including home pressed organic apple juice, homegrown organic seasonal fruits, homemade jam & special sweets. If you're staying more than one night, I can cook breakfast for you one of the later dates. We can talk menu. We are well situated as a stopover, but we could also be a destination. We have lawn Bocce ball, Badminton, volleyball, ping pong, & horse shoes. For rest after those exertions, there is a hammock in the redwoods. There is such good bird watching here that the local Audubon stops here during their Xmas bird count. When the weather isn't conducive to outside time, there is a fireplace in the living room. We love to share this beautiful place. Come on over!

  • Mary was delightful and served excellent coffee and a continental breakfast. The room and the whole house was charming, full of her vast collection of art and tile-work, with a strong central American theme. The setting lived up to it's namesake in everyday, including the sweet blackberries - easy pickings at the end of the driveway. Secluded but only a 2 minute drive from the town of Occidental.

  • I absolutely enjoyed my two nights at Shangrila. Mary is the perfect host. My bed was firm and the pastries fresh and tasty. I liked her vegetable garden, bee hive, and hammocks in her redwood grove. I have found my retreat in Sonoma County.

  • Mary's house was very clean, comfortable and in a very neat locations. At her house we saw lots of birds, stars, got a good night's sleep, got to visit with Mary, and enjoy her homemade breakfasts. She even made us Huevos rancheros from scratch, farm fresh eggs and all. We would definitely stay with her again and recommend her as a fabulous hostess.

  • Great experience, Mary was easy to work with and had a very nice breakfast for us prepared. We had to run in and out, so didn't spend a lot of time there, but great location.

  • The Shangrila was perfect. Lovely home in a gorgeous setting just minutes from the wedding we were in town to attend. We woke to coffee and delicious scones and fresh fruit prepared for us. We ate out on the deck with a view of stunning redwoods and lounged in hammocks in the back yard. Mary was gracious and generous and very helpful.

  • Mary is a very friendly host. We loved staying at her place. Amazing place with redwood trees, birds and wonderful Occidental within walking distance.

  • We enjoyed staying in this lovely home in the redwoods, built by the hosts 38 years ago. Warm greeting by Mary, who made us a hot breakfast one day and laid out a nice continental breakfast the other day. Her home has a quiet, easy atmosphere with a big garden and deck with redwood trees growing through it. In the photos, I didn't note that the beds were 2 twin beds in the bedroom, but they were quite comfortable.

  • We were thrilled to find tiny Occidental and Mary's very comfortable and welcoming environment. If you don't want the intense wine tourism of Napa and Sonoma, try this slightly off the grid location. Mary's home was perfectly central for a day-trip loop to pristine beaches, sea cliff walks, the best bakery west of Chigago, wineries, ranches and many other hidden gems. Thanks for the great breakfast, and the art and literature-clad spaces! S & K (ps.. Loved those fresh air-dried towels!)

  • We would enjoy staying with Mary again in her Shangrila in the Rewoods. We wanted a place to get away from the crowds and we found it. Mary's home is way back in the woods at the end of a little one lane road. It is surrounded by redwoods and orchids. Our room was clean and comfortable. The skylights were wonderful.

My husband, Gene, & I retired in 2011 & spent that year building a house on the Pacific Ocean in Panama. (on airbnb as "Casa Naranja y Azule on the beach). Both our California & Panama places are in beautiful settings which we try to enhance through gardening & bird feeding. We've always loved traveling, especially in Latin America, & these travels are reflected in our art collection & furnishings, which people seems to enjoy. We've hosted many a house party of family & friends, so hosting for airbnb feels comfortable & enjoyable. Ya'll come!
