ONE-BEDROOM SUITE Up a short flight of stairs from the studio into the main house is a (11' x 25') bedroom suite that is larger than many master bedrooms. It features an en suite full bath, queen bed, 18 foot cathedral ceilings, large loft and a private balcony with ocean and coastline views. It can be rented for an extra $40/night (+ per additional guest fee, up to 8 total for both the studio and spare bedroom). An additional cleaning fee of $50 applies. Note that the spare bedroom cannot be rented separately from the studio.
ENTIRE HOME For certain dates, we offer the option of renting our entire, spectacular, four-bedroom, 3600 sq ft house (including the spaces described in this listing).
Welcome Breakfast: If you choose, you are invited to join us for a complimentary breakfast in our house (above the studio) on your first morning. This is an opportunity to experience the Big Island like a local. We will answer any of your questions, or help you plan your trip, and it's nice not to have to go shopping the first day you get here, especially if you arrive late.
Virtual Tour: The folks who sold us this house produced a very nice virtual tour (but, of course, it shows their furniture). The "pano" shots give you 360 degree views of the studio and spare bedroom. Note that they used the studio as an office, but it gives you a sense of the size and space. Type (website hidden) into your browser and search for tour number 4984.
Natural Air Conditioning: We are at a perfect 1600 ft (500m) elevation. It is not only perfect for the views, but in terms of temperature. Folks who live 300 ft below us are in the lava desert where they need air conditioning many nights; Homes 300 ft above us are in the cloud forest where you don't get direct sunlight some days. Here, the cool nights are a wonderful contrast to the warm sunny days. The temperature is just chilly enough most nights to want a light blanket, but warms into the 70’s by about 9am. Mosquitos are almost never a problem. If you linger at dusk on the "nature path" you will likely get bit; but we eat dinner outside every night and rarely encounter mosquitos. In fact, you may choose to sleep out on the lanai. (We can let you know if we expect a rare buggy evening.)
The Grounds: Our house is situated well off the street at the end of a long driveway in a very private 1.5 acre lot filled with banana, papaya, macadamia nut, coffee and avocado trees. You are welcome to share in the bounty when the fruit (or the vegetables in our organic garden) are in season. Unlike many farm-like settings in Hawaii we have no roosters or coqui frogs to disturb your sleep. There is a gas grill on the back lanai which you are welcome to use. Also in the back of the house, surrounded by a trellis and lush greenery for privacy, is our warm out-door shower. This is a wonderful first stop when you return home from the beach.
Central Location: We are just 10 minutes to Kona town with its restaurants and nightlife, and 5 minutes to Costco, directly above some of the best coastline on the island: Honokohau Harbor and National Park, and the Pine Trees surf break. The airport is 10 minutes. Kua Bay, sporting the best boogie boarding, body surfing, and frolicking on the island, is just 15 minutes away. Our location gives us traffic-free access to all the kick’n Kohala beaches (Kua, Kukio, Beach 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea) as well as Waimea, which is just 35 minutes. The Waipio Valley overlook is 85 minutes. Hilo is less than 2 hours via Saddle Road. Captain Cook and points south (Green Sand Beach, Southpoint, and Volcano) can be accessed, avoiding the Kona traffic, via the picturesque Old Mamalahola Highway. The bus stops only a quarter mile from our house, but we recommend you rent a car as public transportation is infrequent.
Jurassic Park: If you get hot and want a change from the beach, go two miles straight up Kaloko Drive into the Cloud Forest. There you will find some of the best hiking trails on the island, including one which was used for scenes in the movie Jurassic Park.
Equipment: Beach (and bath) towels, all linens, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner, kitchen basics, boogie boards, beach chairs, and coolers are provided for your use. Surfers, paddle surfers, bikers (road or mountain): inquire with us about renting our bikes or boards. You can schedule a shuttle (with up to 5 bikes) to our favorite single track or down to the race start. We can also arrange a surfing lesson with a top professional, provide a less formal (and inexpensive) surfing lesson ourselves, or just point you to where the waves are breaking.
Fresh Air: We are situated on a hill so the front side of the studio is 10 feet off the ground and has an ocean view, but the mauka (mountain) side is below ground level. If mildew is a major concern, the back alcove of the studio may not be the best place for you to sleep if we have had a lot of rain recently. I mention this because I am very sensitive to mildew, and this is the only part of the house where I ever detect anything.
We Live Upstairs: Our living room is directly above the studio and we do our best to keep it quiet when the studio is rented, but the construction of the house is such that every footstep in our living room can be heard below. We guarantee quiet between 8pm-6:45am, but there will be some traffic weekdays during the school year from 6:45am-7:30am (getting the kids ready for school), and from 4pm-8pm (when they come home, eat dinner, and go to bed). We are happy to provide a high quality, mechanical white noise machine for anyone who is bothered by the sounds of footsteps in the morning. One advantage of renting the spare bedroom is that there is nobody above or below, so it is very quiet. Some people may choose to rent the spare bedroom even if they don’t need the extra space, just so they can be assured of sleeping in.
Adventure: There is no place on earth like the Big Island of Hawaii, and we chose this house because it is the perfect base for exploring it. You are welcome to borrow from our library of guide books, and we are happy to share our recommendations for the best beaches and hikes (some of the best are not in the guide books!), the best places to snorkel with dolphins in the wild, where to eat and shop in Kona, where you can swim in a lava tube and other little known secrets. Our location makes us a good starting point for day trips to other parts of the Island...to the wild coast near Hawi, the rugged jungle and spectacular waterfalls of the Hamuka coast and Waipio Valley, and, of course, the unparalleled Volcanoes National Park.
My partner and I stayed at the Redwood Retreat for a few blissful days. We opted for the spare room, so we could sleep in if we felt the need but we were up fairly early most days enjoying the beautiful mornings.
Andrei's family is kind and welcoming. The kids are creative and conversational (even the 2-year-old!) -- It seems to run in the family.
They gave us lots of tips about places to go and led us to the Kua Bay beach where Andrei body surfs. It was stunning and we saw whales and dolphins jumping.
