The space

Retreat by the Feale is 3 bed bungalow situated in Finuge with 2 private rooms available, double and/or twin room. It is situated a short distance from the famous River Feale, which is an excellent salmon fishing river. Salmon Fishing Licences can be acquired locally if you wish to partake in the activity of angling.

It is situated 2 miles from the famous literary & heritage town of Listowel. Listowel is famous for its Writers Week and Listowel Races & ideal touring base for Kerry. The property has been recently renovated to provide spacious and comfortable accommodation for your stay. The nearest beach is Ballybunion which has 2 blue flags, is about 9 miles away, or if you prefer a golden long sandy beach, why not take a spin to Banna Beach, also a blue flag holder, well worth a visit here if you want to take in a spectacular sunset on your visit.

The property is 17 miles from Tralee which is about 25 min drive and Killarney is about a 50 min drive. Kerry Airport is located about 40 mins away, which is served by Ryanair for UK & European destinations and Aer Lingus Regional for Dublin for onward travel, so ideal for making a connection via Dublin Airport if you are travelling from any US destination. Car Hire is available also at Kerry airport from various companies including Hertz, Avis etc. Shannon Airport is located approx 1 hour and 15 mins from the property.

The Village where the property is located is Finuge which is a traditional Irish crossroads village with a pub, Teach Siamsa and a G.A.A. pitch. Sheehan's Thatched House located at Finuge Cross is regarded as one of the oldest surviving authentic thatched houses in Ireland. Conservation experts estimate it at least 300 years old. In the summer months (weather permitting) traditional cross roads dancing takes place outdoors at the Anglers Rest Pub, this is well worth a visit as its a once in a lifetime experience!!

Numerous festivals take place in Kerry local to the property during the year, notably Listowel Writers Week, Listowel Races, Sean Mc Carthy Memorial Weekend to name but a few. There is numerous restaurants in Listowel to cater for every taste. Traditional Irish Music takes place in some local pubs, details of which can be given to guests on their arrival, these are well worth a visit for a bit of Ceoil & Craic! Also worth a visit in Listowel is Seanchai, the Kerry Writers Museum, here you can learn all about Listowel's Literary Greats like J.B. Keane, Bryan McMahon, George Fitzmaurice to name a few. Further a field in Tralee you will find the Aqua Dome, a great place to take the kids on a rainy afternoon! Dingle is a mear 50 min drive which can be got to via scenic route of the Connor Pass, well worth a visit and of course the town itself with its most famous resident, Fungi the Dolphin, perhaps if you are lucky when you take this boat trip he will pop up and say smile in his own unique way! The town of Killarney is one hour away approx and also worth a days visit with all it has to offer with the Lakes, Ross Castle, Muckross House and may more attractions.

Excellent room, quiet but central location, clean, cosy at night, very comfortable bed, plenty extra towels and toiletries available, close to the local pub, and to top it all off a great host who doesn't mind getting up early and putting the coffee on!!!

We had a lovely stay at Dee's house. The room was nicely decorated, there were towels, a tv, everything we needed was arranged. The house is in the country side, so it takes a 10 min drive to get to a town like Listowel. A car is recommended because the bus doesn't pass the house often. Since we don't have a car while traveling trough Ireland, we got a taxi which was fine too. It costs about €10,-. When we arrived Dee welcomed us and stayed up to have a nice chat. The next morning, after a good night sleep, breakfast was ready for us to enjoy. Above all that, Dee suggested she could bring us to Listowel to catch a bus there for our journey to the next town. We would highly recommend staying with Dee, but do realise you will be in a village in the country side!

We didn't stay at Dee's place. The communication before our stay was good and accurate. Getting the key was easy. But when we arrived in the house we didn't feel comfortable. The house looks not like the pictures (and not all the pictures on airbnb are from the house). The house looks neglected from the outside. Inside we had the same experience although it seemed Dee tried to make it homy. Once you entered the hiuse you get distracted by the amount of empty bottles, cardboxes, random stuff everywhere, dead plants etc. It smelled moldy, the floor was dirty. The sleeping room looked oke. We didn't wanna spent our holiday here, so we left the place, told Dee about our experience and found another place to stay.

Response from Dee:
All the interior pictures of the house acurate as to how it looks and there is pictures of Kerry to show visitors as to what it looks like, as I stated the house is not a modern house and was built in the 1970 so wear and tear is natural, as you had requested I gave you a refund when you did not stay. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip in ireland.

Dee was a great host and made us feel really welcome on arrival. We didn't spend a lot of time in the house as we where out and about at matches, but the room was great and the bed comfortable. We had a lovely breakfast each morning that set us up for the day ahead. Dee was great at giving us directions to all our match locations. Unfortunately we didn't get to see Dee play at any of the pubs. A great location for site seeing the south west of Ireland. Maybe next time.

If you looking for a base for touring Kerry or the Kingdom as its referred to locally, well look no more, being from Kerry myself I cannot recommend the county enough for any kind of break, be it adventure, family or just a get away from it all! I am an avid follower of the national sport GAA especially Gaelic football and travel regular to games in the county and beyond! I love to get back when I can and take in walks on the beach or play a few tunes at a local trad session in the beautiful seaside town of Ballybunion famous for its links golf courses, well worth a visit! Go on send me a mail, you know you want to! :)
