What a perfect retreat. The photos do not do the place justice for the incredible beauty of the area and also for how close the river is to your front door. Our place was immaculately clean, and the kitchen had everything we needed to be fully self sufficient. The town which was a pleasant walk away has 3 grocery stores several fruit stands and many restaurants and bars. But our highlight was Karl's place and the amazing wildlife and beautiful natural surroundings. We did not meet Karl however his assistant Joaquin was the perfect balance between helpful and affording us privacy a real example of Tico warmth and hospitality. My girlfriend and I stayed here for just over 3 weeks and would have loved to have stayed for months! Thankyou karl for this wonderful space to relax and enjoy the most perfect climate I've ever enjoyed.

This is an amazing property above La Suiza next to the Rio Armado. It's like your own private section of a national park--secluded with miles of hiking opportunities and the river almost at your door. It's easy to spend hours (or the day) watching the birds and insects or exploring the river. Many days had amazing thunderstorms and it was fun to try to predict how the rain would affect the river's flow. Joaquin and Flora (Karl's local hosts) truly made my stay comfortable and special. “Professor” Joaquin made a point of pointing out local wildlife and teaching me as much Spanish as he could. He visited most days to maintain the finca and see if I needed anything, and we often enjoyed coffee on the back porch. Flora came less frequently but it was always fun to see her and get a different approach to Spanish lessons! The property (with two houses listed) is about a 30 minute walk from La Suiza, most of which seems like it's straight uphill. It's definitely walkable although you may have second thoughts about lugging your groceries up from town. If you're driving you definitely need 4WD to make it down the driveway from the road. Note that walking the driveway between the house and the road takes about 7 minutes of the 30 minute total. A “normal” car can make it up the road as far as the driveway although it may be hard to find a taxi driver willing to try. One driver we asked went to get us a 4WD taxi instead. Drivers charge Colones for the ride up. Due to a change in my plans I stayed in the larger house on the property (see Finca Pura Vida – Unspoilt Nature) but I imagine the style and quality are similar. The house is Tico typico and comfortable with a covered back porch that is nearly as big as the house. Other than sleeping and cooking we didn't spend much time indoors. The kitchen has a refrigerator with freezer, propane stove and access to a clothes washer. Mostly due to geography, mobile internet service is SLOW and calls drop occasionally. I was never able to make VOIP calls that lasted more than a minute or two. At the top of the driveway the signal and speed improve dramatically. If you're looking for tranquility and isolation this is the place for you! It would also make a great base if you have a 4WD and want to explore the central valley, tour the volcanoes or go white water rafting. Karl was helpful and accommodating at all times and he is truly lucky to have Joaquin and Flora providing hospitality locally. This is definitely a place I'd like to visit again.

This place was a very nice home for us. It's a bit hard to get there - you really need a 4x4 car - but once you've conquered a small mountain the reward is this wonderful cabin in beautiful surroundings. We brought our 9 months old son there and he loved it. We would take walks in the big garden, play by the river, look at the abundance of birds, humming birds and flowers. The hosts Joaqín and Flora were so nice and helpful. Joaqín took us for a small hike and told us about the nature. We also harvested juca root which he helped us cook. Even though he only speaks Spanish he was easy to communicate with and great company. We regretted only having booked to days at this beautiful place.
