Our house is an old farmers house restored following the original design, located in a rural environment. We are just 1 km from the center of Penafiel (and 5 min. from highway A4 Oporto-Penafiel), a small but beautiful town with over 250 years of existence. Although very close to the city, the house is in a very quiet place, ideal to relax with the sounds of nature.
We offer you room (2 beds) with private bathroom and separate entrance if you prefer. We provide a sofa bed or cot for children. Dining room, living room and kitchen shared with the family in familiar ambient.
We will be happy to show you the old water mill, the prehistoric monuments, our production of flowers and mushrooms where we work, ...
A 30 km from the sea, the beaches and the city of Porto, with excellent train connections, 50 km from the heart of the Douro River where is produces the famous Port wine, 30 km from Guimarães, the birthtown of Portugal. These are some of the main attractions that we have around us...
What a great stay! We could not have had a better stay in Douro/Porto region! The location is wonderful if you want to see both the city and the Valley, but don't want to move every two days (30 min drive to Porto and 1-2hr scenic drive to the valley and then on for as long as you wish).
The house itself is picture-perfect. Every detail is thought through, nothing is too much and you will find everything you need for a pleasant stay. Martha Steward can take home decoration tips from Ana.
The hosts are caring, hospitable, accommodating and generous. We had greatest time at their house and we would love to return again.
Our stay at Casa Da Levada with Virgilio, Ana and their two boys was beautiful! Myself, my wife and our 9 month old son stayed there for 6 nigjts. There rural home is stunning and they were extremely hospitable and welcoming. We especially enjoyed their cooking from time to time and the lovely home made 'vino verde' that Virgilio makes!! The house is made of granite rock which has been fully restored displaying all it's country charm and character. They farm flowers on their property and Virgilio happily took time out to show us around his wonderful green houses explaining to us the process involved and what life entails for them. It is a great location to explore northen Portugal and the stunning Meho region but a car is essential as it is quite remote. We would love to come back some day and we highly recommend any persons wanting to stay in this region of Portugal to go and stay with Virgilio and Ana you will love it!!!!
Thank you again Virgilio and Ana
airbnb.com is awash with raving reviews of hosts, and sometimes i wonder whether all these people are so wonderful. i can however, attest that these two people, alex and anna, really deserve that credit. they are genuine and kind, hardworking and heartwarming in their care. i'd adopt m if i could.
Très bon accueil, des hôtes adorables, une maison charmante. Parfait pour une nuit en transit entre porto et le minho !
Virgilio and Ana shared their beautiful home with us, treating us as honored guests. Their home is a renovated farm house a little bit outside of Penafiel. There is a stream running behind their house and you are in the peaceful countryside. Virgilio picked us up and dropped us off at the train station. They offered to take us places even though they both are working and have two young boys. The room was en suite and they welcomed us to use the kitchen and living room. We enjoyed walking into Penafiel and around the area, but be warned, it is hilly. We cannot overstate how warm and friendly Virgilio and Ana are. Staying with Virgilio and Ana is like staying with family.
It was an amazing experience for us to live in this 300 year old stone house. Every part of this house is so beautifully decorated right up to the little details.
Our room was spacious and very comfortable. In fact, throughout our entire trip, we slept the best here. There was an attached bath.
Alex and Ana were very nice hosts. They have a cute son and a little baby boy. They have 2 greenhouses for mushrooms and flowers. Alex brought us to both. We were excited to see how the mushrooms were grown. We plucked them and Alex cook them for dinner. They were very kind to invite us to join them for dinner. He also let us taste his home made wine. We chatted over dinner but we could see they were very tired working all day and dealing with the kids to entertain us so we appreciate them for spending time with us.
We're happy we had this experience with Alex and Ana.
Words cannot describe how much we loved our time at the Rural House in Oporto. Everything about our experience there, from the beautiful surrounding area to the hosts and their gorgeous home was perfect.
Virgílio was extremely helpful and flexible throughout the booking process (even when I was struggling to communicate due to a poor internet connection in the days leading up to our arrival). He met us in the center of town in order that we may find his home more easily. He mentioned a few times that we should get back to the house for lunch, but I would never have guessed that his wife had in fact gone into the trouble of cooking lunch not just for her husband, but for us! We were met at the house with a delicious and warm meal and even warmer smiles. Virgílio shared a bottle (or two, or three) of wine us, as well as stories about the home and how him and his wife had worked so hard to restore it. He also gave us many tips about beautiful places to see and things to do in Portugal, even pulling out his own map to try and guide us to the “hidden gems” he was describing.
We slept so peacefully within the cool stone walls of their ancient home. The beds were comfortable and the blankets were plenty. Virgílio even went into the trouble of accommodating an extra friend that decided to accompany us after we had completed our initial booking.
The next morning Virgílio’s wife prepared an amazing breakfast spread for us – breads, cheeses and homemade pumpkin jam were all laid in front of us as we photographed every angle of her tastefully decorated antique kitchen. I wish that she would make and sell that pumpkin jam in the Netherlands (where I live) – I would buy a jar for every day of the week!
Virgílio and his wife are some of the kindest, most gracious and loveliest hosts we have ever stayed with. The fact that their home is straight out of a glossy travel magazine is the cherry on top. I would love to visit again, and as Virgílio has said, stay for much, much longer.
WOW!! Like a slice of heaven. With it's gorgeous dabbing creek & unique historic building. What an amazing loving family. They are welcoming & generous. A rare find indeed in this life. You will feel relaxed & at home. We slept like babies!! Eat the freshest homegrown mushrooms ever. Drank local wine & liquor. If you need a double dose of "chill out" then don't wait ... bOOk it nOw! You won't be disappointed.
Our experience at the rural house in Penafiel was incredible! A must for anyone looking to enjoy the company of a lovely family in a gorgeous home! The room was quaint with two comfortable beds and a bathroom of our own. We had access to the kitchen, dining and living area as well. The weather was chilli so we got to enjoy the use of the beautiful fire place. It is very clear that Ana and Virgillio take great pride in their home - every square foot is immaculately clean and welcoming.
The best part of our stay at the rural house was getting to know Virgillio and his family. We enjoyed dinners with the family while swapping stories of our different cultures and experiences. Their eldest son Tomas is sweet, energetic and sure to entertain with his enthusiastic personality - although quite shy with his English.
Penafiel is a charming town about 30 minutes east of Porto. We took day trips to the Duoro Valley, Guimaraes, Braga and Porto by train.
Thank you Ana and Virgillio for welcoming us in your home.
