Interaction with Guests
We are not the spot but we are in regular contact with our guest, have some one to help them there and provide them with useful addresses in Quito.
It is located in one of the most traditional quartiers of the historic center of Quito. The quartier is going thorough a process of renovation and revitalisation and artists and creatives are starting to move there.
Walking distance to historic center sights. It is only a few blocks from the Presidential Palace, near small supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, museums, Sucre theatre, and Quito beautiful churches. If you want to go to other parts of the city, you can take a taxi anywhere; they are very cheap.
Other Things to Note
Our doorman Segundo will be on the spot to help you
- Take good care of the flat
- Respect common spaces
- Respect the neighbours
- Do not smoke in the flat
- Use the cutting board on the kitchen, dont cut food directly on the kitchen furniture
- If possible, try not to walk with high heels on the wooden floor
Great experience. Met 100% of all expectations as described by host.
Segundo met me at the apartment very early in the morning, gave me the keys, and explained everything to me in Spanish.
At departure, he arranged for a taxi to the airport, again, at a very early time (5am).
The location is fantastic, with the Historic District all within walking distance. I must have walked every single street of the city. I will have to say that the least 200 meters up to the apartment is quite an exercise up the steep Cotopaxi Street hill. However, once you get to the patio and see what you covered, it was a very gratifying feeling. Highly recommended.
Muchas gracias Marco y Segundo. Lo disfrute todo.
My entire experience with Marco and his apartment was exceptional. Having done almost no "solo" international travel, I admit that in the days leading up to my trip I was rather anxious about all kinds of things. His 3-level apartment is in and of itself a work of art. The decor is modern, tasteful, and minimalistic (as Marco says); the art is beautiful; and the kitchen met my needs perfectly. The overall place is so aesthetically pleasing that it would be very easy to pass the entire day lounging in this place because it's very open and all the windows bring the outside in. The view from the balcony and even from the inside is spectacular.
The Historic Center and Plaza Grande are only a few minutes (and a few blocks) away. Beautiful churches abound in the near vicinity. The huge Basilica is a must-see. Not only is it majestic from both the inside and the outside, but you can also actually walk through the skeleton of the church, ascending one ladder after the next until you reach the pinnacle. You'll be rewarded with a breath-taking 360-degree view of the city. If views are your thing, then it's only a short distance south of Plaza Grande to the hill where the Virgin Mary looms over the city. (You can see it pretty well from Marco's apartment.)
Most Americans and Europeans prefer to board and eat in La Mariscal to the north, I'm sure, but I feel that you'd miss the genuine Quito experience if you stayed there. Yes, there are more good restaurants, but it lacks the atmosphere of Plaza Grande, where you can observe people singing, hear guitars playing, and see the real Quito teeming with life. Good eating options are located just inside the building where all the shoe shiners are stationed between columns.
I did go to La Mariscal twice. I grew up in the sticks of Georgia and haven't forgotten my roots, so I had no problem riding the cable bus (or regular bus) located right next to Plaza Grande. They are clean and efficient. Hell, the entertainers who get on and off the bus are worth the experience. Cost: 25 cents! I enjoyed taking the hour or so bus ride to Mitad del Mundo as well (Cost 40 cents.) I did take a couple of taxis, which are inexpensive, but if it's rush hour, the bus is a better option, I think.
The courtyard of Marco's apartment complex is wonderful - very peaceful! Segundo was one of the hallmarks of my experience there. My Spanish is in its infancy, and his English is in its first trimester, but we were still able to communicate. He was very attentive, and I was very grateful to have him around. Thank you, Segundo.
Thank you, Marco, for communicating so well with me from the beginning. Folks, if you book this place, you'll immediately, receive great info from Marco, and you'll love the place.
Dear David, BIG THANKS for your great review and all your insights that will be very useful for future guests. We see you really got to know the "real" Quito. We will definititely add your suggestion about the Basilica to our list of "not to miss" places.:-). It is always a pleasure to host people like you that can appreciate and enjoy things Quito has to offer. Regards.
This apartment was perfect for our stay in Quito. Marco provided thorough instructions, and his doorman Segundo was friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
The view from the apartment is really as incredible as it appears in the pictures, and its location is ideal for touring around the Centro Historico.
The only think to note is that the apartment is up a short, steep hill, and at 9000+ ft elevation, you may be a bit winded as you walk back home from exploring. This was no problem for us, but would be good for other guests to know.
Stunning appartment - everything it says on the listing and more.
Segundo, the caretaker was really helpful and even though we dont speak great spanish he managed to help us arrange taxis and all the basic things we needed on arrival and before departure.
Marco is really attentive - although he's not normally resident in the flat he was in regular contact at all times by email and we incredibly helpful at every step of the way!
Amazing location in old town with walking to restaurants, tourist sites etc very nearby. Quiet too in the evenings so easy to sleep.
Safe feeling location and good secure appartment complex.
Wow! What a great place to stay! We were sad to leave the flat. Truly a highlight from our trip. The recommendations around town were also useful. We also went to the market and did some cooking which was really nice. We often took a mid-day break just to take in the view and have a drink. We were very comfortable, and happy!
The place of Marco is very charming with a very nice view of Quito. The guardian show us around and was very helpful if we need something.
I just came back from Marco's place in Quito and all I can say is "wonderful". The apartment is an architectural dream located at the heart of the historic city center. Segundo was amazingly helpful, discreet and solved any little thing in minutes. I am taking notes from Marco to be a better host with my own airbnb in Chile. There was freshly ground coffee, fruits and the place was spotless. Marco's was constantly communicating and all his suggestions made things so easy, it felt like we were instant locals knowing exactly where to go and what to do. My favorite hangout place was the Hotel Plaza Grande, at walking distance with great breakfast, dinners and a first row view onto the Plaza where so many things happen.
I recommend this apartment to anyone wanting to see Quito. Our friends were at a regular hotel in the modern (busy and very polluted area) and they were so jealous! Price was the same except here the space was amazing, what a balcony, what a view..... magical!!!
Thanks Marco, we shall return.

About the Host, Marco
I am an Ecuadorian art restaurator and contemporary artist. I have been working for many years restoring churches in Quito historic center.
When an arquitect friend showed us the project, we fell in love with the place. The atmosphere is magic and we can see many of the churches I restaured, from our room or when we are having breakfast.
I have also contributed to the interior design of the flat. I specially ordered the floor tiles from an old artisan in Ambato. He also made for us two stone lions that we placed in the house to protect it. This is why it is called: Casa de los leones. I designed the kitchen. I decorated the appartment with some of my works and some antique paintings. I have also have a small art room and atelier in the 1st floor where the works of art are on sale.
The flat is minimalistic in design and furniture. We just put there a few nice things. As we use it only when go on holidays, we have the basics for my family to feel confortable. We like to be surronded by beautiful things but not overloaded by objects. We have personally chosen all what is in the appartment for the family to enjoy. I hope you will like it as well.
My family and I we return as often as we can to our magic place in Quito.
We love art, culture, arquitecture and good food. We can help you to plan your trip and give you some hints about interesting things to visit, expos or give you tips about my favourite restaurants and places. We will help you to have a trip to Ecuador beyond the typical touristic circuits.
If you are an artistic person, you like contemporary art and design, arquitecture, antiques and exploring, this is the place for you. You will not be disappointed. Welcome to Casa de los leones!.
