Description

The space

You will think you have walked back in time! Ideal for families or couples (up to 8 people). Located in SW France less than 2 hours N of Toulouse, the village is ranked Premier among France's "Most Beautiful Villages." Our 4 BR 4.5 Bath home has gourmet kitchen and a beautiful, private garden for al fresco dining. Enjoy the exquisite pleasures of gourmet food, wine, foie gras and truffles.

Set at the lower end of a beautiful artists' village, just inside the medieval village gate, Maison d'Etre welcomes and invites you, your family and friends to stay a while. Originally built in the 14th century, the home now has everything you need to make it your base of operations while exploring this remarkable part of France. Located on the enchanting River Lot, one will find much to do in and around St Cirq LaPopie. There are very few signs in the village of anything more recent than the 18th century. It is under consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Considered the most beautiful 100 km in France, the road along the banks of the River Lot will delight at every turn. Tour nearby chateaux and dine on wonderful gourmet meals. Kayak, canoe or swim in the river. Shop in thriving markets in one of the many other nearby beautiful villages. See cave paintings at Pech Merle. Located 15 minutes away, these caves are one of the last real caves open for public visiting. The local museums show everything from current art to the history of local farming practices. Enjoy tasting the acclaimed regional wines (Malbec) of the Cahors appellation. A visit to twonderful and award winning wineries is a great day trip. The world-famous wineries of Bourdeaux and St. Emilion are a half-day’s drive from the village. The famous Tour de France climbs of the Pyrenees are similarly less than a half-day away. There is great hiking and magnificent biking in the region. It is a slice of heaven for those interested in spelunking.

Finally, return each evening to relax in your own private home. With your fresh market purchases, you may make your own coq au vin in the fully-equipped, gourmet kitchen. Or walk to one of the 10 great restaurants within the village to enjoy the local cuisine. In the evening, it is a delight to simply wander the cobbled streets and take in the views. For a panormaic view of the Lot River valley, climb up to the top of the castle ruins on 300 foot outcrop.

GROUND FLOOR: Dining room (seats up to 8), with door to garden. Fully equipped kitchen that goes through to luxurious bathroom with heated towel rack, washer/dryer. Lots of clean towels.

MIDDLE LEVEL: Wood burning fireplace and two lounge areas. One with flat screen TV, DVD, books & music. Comfortable sofa can also be twin bed for extra guest. Interaction with guests

Although I live in the US, I am available at any time for questions and concerns. I provide a LOT of detaled information to make the experience exceed my guests expectations

The neighborhood

It is a slice of heaven. Everywhere one looks is eye candy. You will NOT be disappointed.

Getting around

A car is almost essential, and highly recommended except for those truly dedicated to walking 20 mnutes to catch the bus in to Cahors. Without a car for sight seeing, one may hire a local driver for the caves, the chateux and the markets.

Other things to note

In two of the bedrooms there are king beds which can be converted to twins.

Maison d'Etre is truely magical and enchanting. Perfectly located in a medieval village, we were surrounded by cobbled streets full of charming little artisan galleries and restaurants. The river is a short walk away for swimming, kayaking, or lazing around. The house has an incredible view over the valley, is rustic (authentically old!) but beautiful furnishings and linens make you feel very comfortable. The house comfortably fits 4 couples, each having their own privacy, space and bathroom. Kitchen/house is very well equipped (although why would you cook in France?!). Breakfast in the garden was a treat each morning, with passerbys looking enviously through the gate! Ann was the ultimate host, providing us with loads of info about the area over email before we left, and during our stay. We couldn't recommend Maison d'Etre, or Ann more highly.

Response from Ann:
Oh my! The clothes dryer should have been folded and put away long before you arrived! Thank you for letting me know. I will ask someone to take care of that right away. I so appreciate this information. I am hoping to install lighting on the terrace per your suggestions as soon as I return in September and can find an electrician. It is a GREAT idea. Meanwhile, I often find that leaving the light on in the master bathroom on the first floor can be helpful to shed light on the terrace from above. Cheers!

I live on Mercer Island WA with my 2 dogs, 1 cat and 1 husband. I love to hula hoop, walk and practice yoga. I love France, the food, the countryside, the weather, the markets and the people. I could go on. My husband loves to cycle when we are there and has files he can provide on many of his favorite routes.

We want everyone to have an experience at Maison d'Etre that exceeds their expectations.
