When guests walk in we see wow on their faces. The house is spacious with a gourmet kitchen
and real beds for 16.
"the perfect house for a family reunion"
"the cool at night was just right"
"close to everything"
"the sleeping porch was so romantic"

The Space

The house is elegant, but not fancy...it's comfortable. And what a VIEW!

There are many different spaces for relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet. A large group can spread out and not see much of each other or gather in the great room for a banquet or a polka!

HIGHLIGHTS:

4 master bedroom suites,
3600 square feet (334 sq m) of indoor space,
5 separate lanai (porches) provide 2000 sq ft of outdoor living space (most of it covered),
real beds for 16,
two kitchens, full laundry facilities, wireless internet, hardwood floors, cathedral ceilings, ample parking,
cool nights and warm days,
closer to the best beaches than anything in Kona town, including top-rated Kua Bay,
quiet, completely private 1.5 acre lot all to yourselves.

This is our home. We rent it out when we are away, so it does not have the sterile feel of a condo or vacation rental.

VIRTUAL TOUR: The folks who sold us this house produced a very nice virtual tour. The "pano" shots give you 360 degree views of most parts of the house. Of course, it shows the house with their furniture, but except for the studio (which they used as an office), we have made similar choices about furniture placement. Go to... tours(D0T)hawaiianvirtualtours(D0T)C0M
and search for tour number 4984.

MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE HOUSE

Natural Air Conditioning: We are at a perfect 1600 ft (500m) elevation, with expansive ocean and coastline views. Folks who live 300 ft below us are in the lava desert where they need air conditioning many nights; homes 300 ft above us are in the cloud forest where you don't get direct sunlight some days. Here, the cool nights are a wonderful contrast to the warm sunny days. The temperature is just chilly enough most nights to want a light blanket, but warms into the 70’s by about 9am. Mosquitos are almost never a problem. If it has rained recently there will be some mosquitos in the back garden at dusk; but we eat dinner nearly every evening on the front lanai, which is 20 ft off the ground, without any problems.

The Grounds: Our house is situated well off the street at the end of a long driveway in a very private 1.5 acre lot filled with banana, papaya, macadamia nut, coffee and avocado trees. You are welcome to share in the bounty when the fruit (or the vegetables in our organic garden) are in season. Unlike many farm-like settings in Hawaii, we have no roosters or coqui frogs to disturb your sleep. There is a gas grill on the back lanai which you are welcome to use. Also in the back of the house, surrounded by a trellis and lush greenery for privacy, is our out-door shower with hot water! This is a wonderful first stop when you return home from the beach.

Central Location: We are just 8 minutes to Kona town with its restaurants and nightlife, and 5 minutes from Costco, directly above some of the best coastline on the island: Honokohau Harbor and National Park, and the Pine Trees surf break. The airport is 12 minutes. Kua Bay, recently voted the best beach on the Big Island and sporting the best boogie boarding, body surfing, and frolicking is just 15 minutes away. Our location gives us traffic-free access to all the kick’n Kohala beaches (Kua, Kukio, Beach 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea) as well as Waimea, which is just 35 minutes. The Waipio Valley overlook is 75 minutes. Hilo is just over an hour via the recently completed Saddle Road Hwy. Captain Cook and points south (Green Sand Beach, Southpoint, and Volcano) can be accessed, avoiding the Kona traffic, via the quaint artist town of Holualoa, and the picturesque Mamalahola Highway.

Beds:

Bedroom Descriptions:

The Master Suite is nearly 500 sq ft and boasts panoramic ocean views, stained glass windows, cathedral ceilings, and a jetted tub surrounded by screened windows, creating the feeling of taking a bath in the forest canopy.

Bedroom Suites #2 and #3 are each the size of an ordinary master bedroom with en suite full bath with tub, 18 ft ceilings and a loft. The mauka (mountain side) suite (#2) has French doors opening onto the garden and is outfitted with two twins in the loft, twin bunk beds, and a queen bed. It is a mirror image of the makai (ocean side) suite except the latter has a king size bed and its own private balcony with ocean views.

Downstairs is a 1000 sq foot studio apartment outfitted with two queen beds and a California king. If members of your group want more privacy (and a romantic feel), one or two of these beds can be moved onto one of the adjacent covered porches. We have two full sized cribs and two queen Aerobeds that are available upon request.

Even the studio has ocean views from its picture window and two large lanais. With its own entrance and a door directly into the main house, the studio is a perfect space for the in-laws or a second family that is part of your group.

Food Preparation: The primary kitchen is well stocked, has space for several people to work together, and is integrated into the Great Room. It has three sinks, over 8 square meters of granite counter space, cutting boards, dishwasher and other stainless steel appliances, a Vitamix blender, and everything else a foodie needs to grill, bake, or wok delicious meals. (There is also a kitchen with a full size fridge in the studio.) In the back of the house is a lanai with a gas grill. This lanai is also our favorite place to breakfast since it catches the morning rays.

Jurassic Park: If you get hot and want a change from the beach, go two miles straight up our street (Kaloko Drive) into the Cloud Forest. There you will find some of the best hiking trails on the island, including one which was used for scenes in the movie Jurassic Park. The House Manual includes detailed instructions on how to find our favorite hikes, most of which you will not find in any guidebook!

Equipment: Beach and bath towels, all linens, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner, boogie boards, beach chairs, and coolers are available for use free of charge. A big advantage of renting a working house it that the kitchen is stocked and available for your use. More guidance about what you can use in the kitchen is provided in the house manual. Surfers, paddle surfers, bikers (road or mountain): inquire with us about renting our bikes or boards. We can also arrange a surfing lesson for beginners or experts (with a top professional), or just point you to where the waves are breaking.

Adventure: There is no place on earth like the Big Island of Hawaii, and we chose this house because it is the perfect base for exploring it. You are welcome to borrow from our library of guide books, and we are happy to share our recommendations for the best beaches and hikes, the best places to snorkel with dolphins in the wild, where to eat and shop in Kona, and other little known secrets. From here you can day trip to other parts of the Island...to the wild coast near Hawi, the rugged jungle and spectacular waterfalls of the Hamuka coast and Waipio Valley, and, of course, the unparalleled Volcanoes National Park.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the entire 3600 square foot, completely private house and 1.5 acre property, including five covered lanai (porches) and the large downstairs studio.

Interaction with Guests

You will have the house all to yourself, and unless you have questions, you will not see us during your stay. When planning your trip, many guests take advantage of our extensive local knowledge. We have explored most every part of this island including many hidden gems that are not in the guide books. If you tell us what you like to do, we can help you confidently include just the right amount of adventure in your trip. We can also recommend the best places to eat out or where to buy when eating in. (The very freshest food can be picked right from our garden, and you are encouraged to enjoy whatever is in season.)

The Neighborhood

The Big Island is a BIG place. We chose this house partly because of it's perfect central location. At 1600 ft, we have the perfect climate: cool nights and warm days, and easy, traffic-free access to the airport (12 minutes), Kona (8 minutes), Costco (5 minutes), and beaches (15+ minutes). We are one of the closest upscale neighborhoods to Kua Bay (15 minutes)--recently rated the top beach on the Big Island and one of the top ten beaches in the USA!

The recently opened Saddle Road Hwy gets you from our house to the Hilo (wet) side in just over an hour.

Getting around

Public transportation on the big island is very poor. A rental car is a must no matter where you are staying.

  • We have only great things to say about our stay here. Andrie was helpful and flexible in making sure all the room arrangements were comfortable for the 13 guests we had staying with us. Everyone said the beds were extremely comfortable and there were plenty of fresh bath and beach towels for our entire bunch. The kitchen had every tool we needed and a special bonus was the delicious homemade lilikoi butter Andrei left for us to try. There was a fresh cut bunch of bananas hanging and a bowl full of just picked avocados waiting for us too. While walking around the stunning property we also found grapefruit and papaya. From our very first contact Andrei was helpful and friendly. He was available by email our entire trip and promptly answered any questions we had. The first time we spoke with him was to say goodbye on the phone. He was so nice to us! He made us feel like we were his friends. We appreciate the warm welcome and all the great suggestions of places for us to play on the island. The home is unique and beautiful and the property is a fun place to explore. We appreciate the kindness and opportunity to stay in the Private Redwood Retreat home!

  • We had a wonderful stay. The house was great, with easy access to the beaches and other activity areas. There were nine in our group (6 adults & 3 children). We had plenty of room & lots to spare. The house and location, reminded us of Swiss Family Robinson. It was very spacious, with easy access to everything. It was so refreshing to be able to pick fresh fruits and herbs. The way the house was situated provided lots of privacy. The vegetation was so thick and lush, it was easy to imagine we were in our own private jungle. The owners left us with a house manual and an area activity guide book. Both were very helpful. We would definitely return and recommend this location, for a perfect family ( or other large group) vacation.

  • We are from Germany ( so please sorry about the bad english) And we were in hawaii because my nephew and his Friend started for the ironman triathlon.

We staid with 12 People ( for a few days 14 People)
In the house of Andrei, Allie, Milo, Luca and Nico.

And it was Great ( for south germans great is simmilar to fantastic, sensationel, etc.)

Just by the first contact with Andrei by Email and later by (website hidden) he seems very likeable to us.

He gave us a lot of tipps and recommandations what we can do on big island, were to find the best beaches for snorkeling or just relaxing, etc.

When we arrived we were fascinated about the house between a big exotic garden with bananas and goavas and papayas and other interesting botanical plants.

we came into a house with a lot of space, very great an nice rooms and terraces.
The view from the front terrace is great. You can see the wonderfull exotic garden and the ocean and in the evening you can drink your sundowner on the terrace.

The pictures in the web are very real (rather unterstated). But you can get a really good impression about the size of the house and the neigbourhood.

The climatic conditions of the house are perfect. Always a little bit colder than in kona downtown, perfect to relax.

the position of the house is also very good.
a short way to kona (about 7 min) and near the street to waimea and sattle road.

we felt us very comfortible in the house and we thank andrei and xys very much for the hospitality and confidence.

its a great pity that germany is exactly on the other side of the earth. Otherwise we wood come back next year again.

  • This was is a delightful place to stay--beautiful, clean, quiet, above the town but close enough to get there quickly. The house is wonderful with multiple outdoor balconies and great views all the way out to the ocean. We were four people, three adults and a child, and we had plenty of room to spread out. Even the downstairs suite would have been roomy enough for our group. The only downside is that you absolutely need a car--no public transportation here. But then of course you'd want a car to explore this fabulous island.

About
We are Allie (mom), Andrei (dad), and sons Milo, Luca, and Nico! We used to live in Mexico (San Miguel de Allende), and before that in Seattle. But Hawaii rocks! As you can tell from our profile photos, dad is more comfortable on a wave then at an Easter party. At first mom wanted to crop him out of the Easter party photo, but since you will probably be talking to him when you set up the rental, we thought it appropriate that this picture captures dad's "what you see is what you get," straight-shooting approach to life. He is not going to sugar coat anything, so ask him whatever you want to know. He knows the island, and this is your chance to benefit from some local knowledge. Dad is a writer and works for an educational nonprofit he helped create (the POGIL Project). Mom is a family doc for Kaiser. (Someone has to pay the bills.) Milo is a budding engineer and likes to take things apart to see how they work. Luca likes to dance (when nobody is looking). And Nico likes peanut butter. We hope you enjoy our house. We do!
