VIRTUAL TOUR: The folks who sold us this house produced a very nice virtual tour. The "pano" shots give you 360 degree views of most parts of the house. Of course, it shows the house with their furniture, but except for the studio (which they used as an office), we have made similar choices about furniture placement. Go to... tours(D0T)hawaiianvirtualtours(D0T)C0M
and search for tour number 4984.
MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE HOUSE
Natural Air Conditioning: We are at a perfect 1600 ft (500m) elevation, with expansive ocean and coastline views. Folks who live 300 ft below us are in the lava desert where they need air conditioning many nights; homes 300 ft above us are in the cloud forest where you don't get direct sunlight some days. Here, the cool nights are a wonderful contrast to the warm sunny days. The temperature is just chilly enough most nights to want a light blanket, but warms into the 70’s by about 9am. Mosquitos are almost never a problem. If it has rained recently there will be some mosquitos in the back garden at dusk; but we eat dinner nearly every evening on the front lanai, which is 20 ft off the ground, without any problems.
The Grounds: Our house is situated well off the street at the end of a long driveway in a very private 1.5 acre lot filled with banana, papaya, macadamia nut, coffee and avocado trees. You are welcome to share in the bounty when the fruit (or the vegetables in our organic garden) are in season. Unlike many farm-like settings in Hawaii, we have no roosters to disturb your sleep. There is a gas grill on the back lanai which you are welcome to use, and a gas fire pit to roast Smores or warm yourself on cool evenings.
Also in the back of the house, surrounded by a trellis and lush greenery for privacy, is our out-door shower with hot water! This is a wonderful first stop when you return home from the beach.
Central Location: We are just 8 minutes to Kona town with its restaurants and nightlife, and 5 minutes from Costco, directly above some of the best coastline on the island: Honokohau Harbor and National Park, and the Pine Trees surf break. The airport is 12 minutes.
BEACHES: Kua Bay, recently voted the best beach on the Big Island and sporting the best boogie boarding, body surfing, and frolicking is just 15 minutes away. Our location gives us traffic-free access to all the kick’n Kohala beaches (Kua, Kukio, Beach 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea) as well as Waimea, which is just 35 minutes.
The Waipio Valley overlook is 75 minutes. Hilo is just over an hour via the recently completed Saddle Road Hwy. Captain Cook and points south (Green Sand Beach, Southpoint, and Volcano) can be accessed, avoiding the Kona traffic, via the quaint artist town of Holualoa, and the picturesque Mamalahola Highway.
BR#2: queen, 2 twins (bunk beds) plus twin the loft
BR#3: king plus a queen in the loft
Studio Mainspace: Cal king
Studio Alcove: Queen
Sleeping Porch: twin or Cal King
The Master Suite is nearly 500 sq ft and boasts panoramic ocean views, stained glass windows, cathedral ceilings, and a jetted tub surrounded by screened windows, creating the feeling of taking a bath in the forest canopy.
Bedroom Suites #2 and #3 are each the size of an ordinary master bedroom with en suite full bath with tub, 18 ft ceilings and a loft. The mauka (mountain side) suite (#2) has French doors opening onto the garden and is outfitted with a twin in the loft, twin bunk beds, and a queen bed. It is a mirror image of the makai (ocean side) suite except the latter has a king size bed, a queen in the loft and its own private balcony with ocean views.
Downstairs is a 1000 sq foot studio apartment. The main space is outfitted with a California king bed, a pool and ping pong table, and a kitchen with a full size fridge. An alcove off the studio (separated by a heavy curtain) has a queen bed, and its own entrance to a bathroom (shared with the studio main space). On the adjacent covered sleeping porch is a twin bed. We have a cot, two full sized cribs, several comfortable sleeping mats, and two queen Aerobeds that are available upon request and can be placed in any room.
Even the studio has ocean views from its picture window and two large lanais. With its own entrance and a door directly into the main house, the studio is a perfect space for the in-laws or a second family that is part of your group.
Food Preparation: The primary kitchen is well stocked, has space for several people to work together, and is integrated into the Great Room. It has three sinks, over 8 square meters of granite counter space, cutting boards, dishwasher and other stainless steel appliances, a Vitamix blender, and everything else a foodie needs to grill, bake, or wok delicious meals. (There is also a kitchen with a full size fridge in the studio.) In the back of the house is a lanai with a gas grill. This lanai is also our favorite place to breakfast since it catches the morning rays.
Jurassic Park: If you get hot and want a change from the beach, go two miles straight up our street (Kaloko Drive) into the Cloud Forest. There you will find some of the best hiking trails on the island, including one which was used for scenes in the movie Jurassic Park. The House Manual includes detailed instructions on how to find our favorite hikes, most of which you will not find in any guidebook!
Equipment: Beach and bath towels, all linens, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner, boogie boards, surf boards, beach chairs, and coolers are available for use free of charge.
Surfers, paddle surfers, bikers (road or mountain): inquire with us about renting our bikes or boards. We can also arrange a surfing lesson for beginners or experts (with a top professional), or just point you to where the waves are breaking.
Adventure: There is no place on earth like the Big Island of Hawaii, and we chose this house because it is the perfect base for exploring it. You are welcome to borrow from our library of guide books, and we are happy to share our recommendations for the best beaches and hikes, the best places to snorkel with dolphins in the wild, where to eat and shop in Kona, and other little known secrets. From here you can day trip to other parts of the Island...to the wild coast near Hawi, the rugged jungle and spectacular waterfalls of the Hamuka coast and Waipio Valley, and, of course, the unparalleled Volcanoes National Park.
Guests have the entire 3600 square foot, house and 1.5 acre property all to themselves. This includes five covered lanai (porches) and the large downstairs studio.
Interaction with Guests
You will have the house all to yourself, and unless you have questions, you will not see us during your stay. When planning your trip, many guests take advantage of our extensive local knowledge. We have explored most every part of this island including many hidden gems that are not in the guide books. If you tell us what you like to do, we can help you confidently include just the right amount of adventure in your trip. We can also recommend the best places to eat out or where to buy when eating in. (The very freshest food can be picked right from the garden, and you are encouraged to enjoy whatever is in season.)
The Big Island is a BIG place. We chose this house partly because of it's perfect central location. At 1600 ft above sea level, we have the perfect climate: cool nights and warm days, and easy, traffic-free access to the beaches. We are one of the closest upscale neighborhoods to Kua Bay (15 minutes)--recently rated the top beach on the Big Island and one of the top ten beaches in the USA!
We are close to everything: airport (12 minutes), Kona (8 minutes), Costco (5 minutes) and the recently opened Saddle Road Hwy gets you from our house to the Hilo (wet) side in just over an hour.
Public transportation on the big island is very poor. A rental car is a must no matter where you are staying. No reasonably priced rental cars left? Do you need a bike or surfboard rack? No problem. Ask about renting our 4WD 8-passenger Honda Pilot.
Other Things to Note
This is a good choice for a group who values privacy (this is a VERY private lot), likes to prepare and eat food together (with a cooks kitchen and a huge deck with a killer view), and prefers healthy cool mountain air at night (not refrigerated air from an air conditioner).
Prices include 4.16% Hawaii State General Excise Tax, and 9.25% Local Accommodations Tax.
We are happy to share our stuff including the stereo, drum set, electric guitar, keyboard, boogie boards, and most anything in the kitchen. We provide most household items including bedding, bath and beach towels, toilet paper, paper towels, sponges, soap, laundry detergent etc.
Andrei's house was fabulous! It's a beautiful spacious area which makes you feel like you are staying in a jungle. The kids had a marvelous time picking papaya, mangos, and other fresh fruit. There are a lot of nice things for children, including books and a small pool table. We managed to break two things while we were there and Andrei was very gracious about them. He was very easy to get a hold of when we had questions, despite being out of the country. I would caution that the bedroom spaces work best if you are going with family, as opposed to many separate families. There are many beds, but they are really situated in four different rooms, so if you have more than four families, you may want to think about the layout a little and discuss with Andrei. For us it worked out perfectly, but if more people had come, we might have had to put multiple couples into shared rooms together. The location is great - not far from the beach or other wonderful places. I would definitely read Andrei's suggestions about which beaches and hiking places to go to. His suggestions were far better than any travel book. Overall, amazing trip and I'd highly recommend staying here.
The Redwood Retreat was an incredible place to spend a week in Hawaii. Breakfast every morning was fresh papayas we picked from the trees outside. The house is up at 1500 feet elevation, so it was sunny and green and the perfect temperature every day. We even got to see a family of pigs roaming around in the forest out back.
Andrei's house is a beautiful wooden house, and for those seeking a bit privacy it well elevated with views of the shore and yet only several minutes drive from Kona and beaches.
The Big Island in general is a special place, and we preferred it to the tourist-laden fervour of Waikiki. Quiet beaches, volcano tours ... but still the opportunity to go to some decent restaurants only a short distance away make for an excellent combination.
Sadly our vacation was cut short by the news of a death in the family, but some of our house-guests stayed behind and had nothing but praise for Andrei and this dwelling.
We had a fabulous family vacation here! The house was perfect for us. Enough bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone to be comfortable and private with lots of room for togetherness too. Our host, Andrei couldn't have been more communicative, helpful, and easier to "deal" with. None of us had ever been to Hawaii before and hope to come back. We were sad to leave!
Andrei was a spectacular host! His insights into the local island activities were most helpful. He quickly and thoroughly responded to our every question and offered suggestions for things we had not even thought to ask. The house is amazing! The spacious kitchen and living area gave our extended family of 15 the perfect place to enjoy each other. The four separate sleeping and bathroom facilities gave us the space and privacy we needed as well. The grounds offered fresh avocado, papaya and banana. The sunsets were stunning! A Private Redwood Retreat is an accurate description.
We had a party of 13 people, 10 adults and 3 children scheduled to stay for 8 days. Prior to arrival to this beautiful redwood retreat, my husband and I were slightly nervous that the home wouldn't be as nice as it looked online. To our sheer delight, it was even more beautiful and welcoming than we expected. Andrei left us some gorgeous bananas to be enjoyed throughout the week. I can't possibly convey how amazing this home was for our group over our Thanksgiving holiday, but I will try.
The kitchen is HUGE and excellent for anyone looking to create meals together. Each bedroom is so spacious. The beds were luxurious and we all slept well in them each night. The lofts were fun for the little ones as it doubled as a "private fort". The master bathroom will make you feel like you're at a spa. The downstairs living area was so much fun for the teenagers and young adults in our group. They played pool, ping pong and enjoyed Netflix on the giant TV in the evenings. The lanais, both front and back, are relaxing and lovely. We grilled several evenings on the back lanai. We ate every dinner on the front lanai and it was so fun to be able to fit our entire group at the "dining table". My grand daughter enjoyed the drums and keyboard. She even discovered a swing and Grandpa hung it for her in the living room, which we all enjoyed! The grounds are lush, the fruit is plentiful, the avocados are huge and delicious and Andrei made everything so accessible. It was fun to explain to our grand daughter the idea of composting, so thank you for that as well Andrei.
We also enjoyed the "tips" for the local hikes and beaches.
If I had to rate our experience at Andrei's home, I would give it 5 out of 5 stars! He was a pleasure to communicate with before our trip, during our stay and now that we've returned home. I will certainly come back to this beautiful home for another stay. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Andrei and his ohana for a wonderfully comfortable and cozy home to call "ours" for that week!
My staff and I stayed at this house for a work related trip to the Big Island and we all thought it was great! It was very spacious with patios, balconies, and views totally surrounding the house. Definitely comfortable house for all ten of us. The property was clean, well-maintained, and the property owner was great to work with. The location is also in close driving proximity to beaches and downtown Kona.

About the Host, Andrei
We are a family of five. We live in Kona but we are currently on an adventure in Mexico. Before that we lived in Seattle. Hawaii rocks! As you can see, Dad is more comfortable on a wave then at an Easter party. He will not sell you any sugar coating, so ask him your questions. He knows the island, and this is your chance to benefit from local knowledge. We hope you enjoy our house. We do!
