Please note that the reason this room has significantly fewer reviews than my other room, is likely due to the fact that I created the listing one year after the first room. Additionally, I recently, (from the end of November, 2013 through February 1,2014), sublet the room and did not have any airbnb guests. Finally, check out time actually depends on whether or not the room is booked after you.
This is a charming three-bedroom flat that is a stone's throw from the Ashby BART (subway) station. On weekends, you can attend the flea market there and find all sorts of wonderful treasures. The neighborhood is almost entirely residential. There is a great breakfast spot one block away and a fantastic coffee/sandwich/pastry shop three blocks away. Over the course of 2013, several new restaurants and coffee shops have opened along Alcatraz Avenue, which is a mere two blocks from the flat. There is a karaoke bar right around the corner and the post office is at the top of the street. Other than that, you'll have to walk about 15 minutes to get to Telegraph Ave or head over to Downtown Berkeley or the Gourmet Ghetto for some amazing cuisine. The Cal campus is just one stop on BART and North Berkeley is two stops ($1.75 each way), and you can get to downtown SF in less than 25 minutes on BART as well ($3.50 each way). You can't park in front of my home on the first Tuesday of the month from 9a - noon or across the street on the first Monday of the month from 9a - noon. Other than that, parking is plentiful and free.
Your bedroom is mid-sized, but there is no t.v. There is a queen sized bed, a small side table, a desk and hangers for your use in the detached wardrobe. This room is directly off the living room and shares a wall with the flat screen. Typically, if you are at home sleeping, I will watch t.v. in my room. There will be clean sheets and towels for your use in this room.
The primary room is modest-sized and comfortably sleeps two in a queen-sized bed. There are two matching night stands, a matching three-drawer chest and a closet (with hangers). There's a 19" flat screen with DirecT.V. hook-up. The room is at the back of the house so you don't hear any of the (almost non-existent) street noise. There will be clean sheets and towels available for your use.
Check the calendar for my other listing to find out if both rooms are available at the same time.
Please note that I have some things stored in the closets of the rooms. I ask that you leave them alone.
In general, the apartment is nicely appointed. There's a comfy sofa and loveseat in the living room. A good-sized t.v. is mounted on the wall. If you want to have movie night, there's a surround sound system for our entertainment.
The kitchen is quite large and you're free to use anything that you need to cook and serve a meal. You'll be able to get fresh ingredients for any creation that you come up with at Berkeley Bowl, which is less than 1/2 a mile from the flat and is quite possibly the BEST market on earth, (think Whole Foods for less than half the price).
Also, if you are visiting from another country, I have a pre-paid T-Mobile phone that you can load up and use during your stay.
Important side note: This is a queer/queer-friendly household. We won't tolerate intolerance.
You may use anything in the common areas except for the China on the kitchen table and the black glasses in the kitchen cupboard.
Interaction with Guests
I take my cue from my guests as to the level of interaction.
BART as well as the F and #12 busses are within a five minute walk from the house. Go to (website hidden), for specific details. If you are using a smartphone, you can go to (website hidden) or (website hidden) for real-time arrivals.
Please remove your shoes upon entering. If you cook, or make coffee or use dishes/cutlery, please tidy up when you are done. Also, please dry off in the shower/tub. All I really ask is that you please be respectful of my home.
If you are visiting family or friends in the Bay, please let me know before you bring someone over to the flat. I don't mind you having guests, I'd just like to be prepared.
No smoking indoors. We smoke on the back patio unless it is raining, when we go out front.
I love kids so long as I can leave them when I'm ready. Therefore, no one under 18 allowed. Sorry.
As previously mentioned, I've got some stuff (clothes and such) stored in the rooms. Please leave them alone.
I leave the lights on for you at night. Please turn them off when you get home. I'll likely be asleep when you arrive at the house.
It is important NOT to use the microwave and the toaster or sandwich maker at the same time. They are all on the same circuit and will cause a fuse to blow if you use more than one of them at the same time.
The wireless network name is Boo Boo Net and the password is 1810booboo.
When closing the front and back doors, it is very important to make certain that they are securely closed and MOST IMPORTANTLY, that they are locked. Also, make certain that you have your key with you before you close the door.
Check the street signs for when you CAN'T park on a particular street. There is no parking in front of the house between 9am and noon on the first Tuesday of each month. There is no parking on the opposite side of the street between 9am and noon and the first Monday of each month.
That's the second time I stay at Truman's place in Berkeley. He's really one of the best host I have ever stayed to: nice, always available, etc...The room is fully furnished and very confortable. I appreciated the fact that he let me use the full equipment in the kitchen. I really recommend his place.
The host was welcoming by keeping touch before we arrived and showing us around the place when we arrived. Neighborhood was fine and loved the pastry shop Truman recommended.
Awesome stay in a beautiful (and also extemly clean) house! We really enjoyed our time here. Truman is a very friendly and caring host, showed us everything we needed to know and provided towels, sheets and even an extra matress.
Nothing to complain about! Thanks again for hosting us.

We stayed for five nights at Truman's place. He was very welcoming and the room was as described and overall really clean.
The location was good, just a few minutes to the Bart station and some nice cafes are really close by. Only the supermarket is a bit further but still in walking distance.
It is definitely a very good stay if you want to visit Berkeley and Oakland or looking for a cheaper alternative to San Francisco.
Big kitchen, comfortable room, Truman was nice when checking in. The washer and dryer are good. The hot water in the shower frequently ran out (especially when a couple was renting the other room), and the shower doesn't drain well -- I was always standing in ankle deep water sometimes with hair from the drain floating in it. The rest of the house is clean.
I was locked out of the house one night due to Truman mixing up the locks. I was standing outside alone at around 11pm banging on his bedroom window for quite awhile trying to wake him up to let me in. The house is in the process of being sold by the owners, and Truman notified me with less than 24 hours that the owners wanted me to be out of the house for most of the next day and that I needed to clear my things so they could take photos of the room. Both of those inconveniences mean I wouldn't personally rent this room from airbnb again (in fact I checked out a few days early), but if you can't find something for a good price and those things wouldn't bother you then this place is fine.
As a responsible host, I feel the need to respond to the comments that you left in your review.
1). The shower doesn't drain well.
. . Every morning I had to remove long, blonde hair from the drain. Since the other guests had dark hair, I presume that it was yours. As a host, I felt that it was my duty to do so and there was no need to make a big deal about it. Also, I did not want the other guests to have to deal with it. Had you told me that the other guests were also leaving hair behind, I would have politely asked you all to kindly remove your own hair from the drain after showering.
2). The hot water frequently ran out.
.. This is typically not a problem. I get out of the shower half an hour before I leave home. Not once was anyone else awake when I left. It is possible that three people taking showers in quick succession might cause the issue. Had you told me during your stay, I could have talked to the other guests about the length of their showers. However, I suspect that you brushed your hair every morning, (see number 1), because you left your hairbrush in the shower. Is it possible that the length of YOUR shower caused the hot water to run out?
3). I was locked out one night.
. . I checked the key before I gave it to you and again today after reading your review. I'll chalk that up to user error.
4). The owners wanted me to be out of the house for most of the next day
. . Immediately after learning about the owners wanting to photograph the room, I notified you. I told you that the OWNERS would PREFER the flat to be empty but that I understood if that was not possible. Essentially, I left it up to you. Also, you make it sound as if I asked you to remove your things entirely. What I asked was for you to consolidate as best you could. NEVER did I ask you to "clear my things so they could take photos of the room."
The point I'd like to make is that, had I been made aware of the issues DURING your stay, I could have made an effort to remedy them. To remain silent and then vent publicly, seems a bit unfair. I think that the plethora of positive reviews in my profile indicate that I'm seen as a very good host. Your comments seem, to me, to indicate that you would not agree. For that I am sorry. I feel badly that your first few days in the States will be memorable, but not in a good way.
I would suggest that the next time you stay with a host, speak up about any issues you might have.
Both the house and the host was nice. The room was very well equipped and clean. Truman was very nice to me and I really enjoy the time at his place.
Truman was awesome, very welcoming and communicative. The place was clean, bed was really comfortable, and it was nice to have access to the kitchen. The location is really convenient for getting around, it's a quiet part of the neighborhood, and there are some lovely cafes nearby (Alchemy has great quiches!).

I'm a 40-year-old guy who moved to Berkeley from San Francisco in February of 2012. I'm outgoing and personable, or so I've been told. That being said, I like the idea of having time alone for myself at home, which is why I'm using (website hidden), rather than getting a full-time roommate. I keep a neat house, but I'm not anal retentive about cleanliness. I suspect that we'll get along just fine as long as you respect me and my home. Reserve the room and come find out.
