The Space

Welcome to our home, tucked into the woods, built with the trees from the property, hewn into a post and beam structure by a local artisan, We have a glassed in stove settled into our fireplace, making it very cozy... Vermont style! Our home is light and bright and airy.

Your room is warm and bright. You have the sitting room too, to give you more space to stretch out in. We can always open up the sitting room couch to offer you another double bed for your additional person if you bring one. You have a shared bath, but we can set one bath aside for you, privately, if you let us know in advance. We have another room to book if you are a bigger party, "Woods Retreat #2". And "Yoga Nest" for the nimble. We can accommodate a party of 6, if need be, just ask.

We live a very active lifestyle here, and can help you find your way on any trails you wish to hike, bike or ski, We are 1 mile below the ski lifts on Mount Mansfield, and right on the x-c and mountain bike trails. We are at the base of the famed Smugglers Notch for leaf peeping, hiking the long trail, and road biking. At the bottom of our drive is the well known, local watering hole, The Matterhorn Restaurant and Bar. You never have to drive! It's all right here!

My son and I can orient you to town, and where all of you who love the arts can find professional theater, music, and oodles of art galleries. We can help you discern what restaurant would suit you. I work at home as an author, and so please understand we are a busy household, we love to have you stay, but we may be working downstairs or running to an event of meeting. Just make yourselves at home upstairs and ignore us!

This house is family style, all bedrooms on the upper floor, so we walk upstairs and through the sitting room to retire too. We will set out good granola for breakfast with cream and milk in the fridge, and with the coffee maker locked and loaded on top. We keep it simple here for everyone's independence, so guests can keep their own time schedule.

There is the Mountain Road shuttle which has different schedules depending on the season, but ostensibly, you could bike or ski to our door, and have everything you need right here, and can even shuttle to town to eat and drink.... no need to ever drive! I'm an 8th generation Vermonter, with lots of info, tips and stories to share. Come be our guests!

(I've just found out we need to charge 9-10% room and meals tax for the state of Vermont, this is why the price went up, sorry!! but thanks for supporting Vermont...)

  • I had a great stay in a quiet house. Jan was gracious, the granola was wonderful, and my stay was relaxing. Thank you.

  • Jan is a great she was very welcoming and made sure every detail was taken care of. The corner room in which I stayed had a great view of pristine forest and the queen bed was very cozy. The location was also perfect as it is much closer to the mountain than most hotels and right across the street from the local favorite Matterhorn bar. Perfect place to lay low and ski for a few days.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Jan! Our room was cozy, warm, and a perfect place to relax after skiing. Jan is *extremely* knowledgeable about Stowe, and pointed us in the direction of some great cross-country skiing at the von Trapp Lodge. We will definitely stay here again when coming to Stowe, and think that you should, too!

  • What a great time in Stowe! It was cold outside but Jan made us feel comfortable inside. She has a great way of inviting you into her home but not making you feel like you are intruding. Comfortable rooms, beds and bath. Hot coffee, tea, granola and fresh fruit each morning! Thanks for everything Jan!

  • Our stay with Jan was as expected based on the content in her profile. We only crossed paths for a few moments when we arrived, but it was sufficient to get all the necessary information for our one night stay. She was very friendly and took some time to give us a run down of the restaurants available nearby (the pizza at Pie-casso's was excellent!). The following morning, breakfast was waiting for us (granola, milk, tea, honey and oranges) just outside our room. The bedroom was clean and private. The only constructive suggestion I would have would be with respect to the bathroom, which could use a thorough cleaning and maybe a coat of paint. The actual sink and toilet were clean, but the rest left a little to be desired. We are not ones to be picky about this ourselves, but we could see how others might be less pleased. Overall this is a great place to stay if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of town. The house was warm and welcoming, the room clean and spacious, and the host pleasant and flexible.

I am an outdoor enthusiast, 8th generation Vermonter, who travels the world to make non-fiction books, mostly for kids, but have a few out for adults too! Live simply, consume less, share more, is something that resonates with me. I love the Vermont healthy, can-do attitude, and the way we are re-energizing agriculture nationally with the idea of eating local, and knowing where your food comes from.
