We are a cooking family and our kitchen is in near constant use. The kitchen is the first room you see when entering our house and you should not expect it to appear spotless. As a family we have a relaxed attitude about OUR living areas.
There are 20 steps involved to get from the first floor up to the room which is on the second floor. If you have trouble with steps this room is probably not for you.
We allow guests to use the microwave and store foodstuffs in the refrigerator. If you think you are going to want to use the kitchen more extensively please discuss it with us prior to booking.
If you are not going to be able to check-in earlier than 10 p.m. please book with another host, sorry no exceptions.
The TV is attached to a Roku player only. Netflix is provided. No cable or satellite TV is provided.
We have had a few complaints that we have a claw foot tub but no shower so if you plan on staying with us keep in mind that there is NOT a shower.
All children (including babies) count as people, so two parents plus a child would be 3 guests. The 3rd guest is $25 per night.
You will be provided a key so that you may come and go at will during your stay. You must always use the back door which is adjacent to the driveway where your packing spot is located on the right hand side of the driveway. One of the images in the listing shows both where you should park and the house entrance.

The house was very conveniently located near the fun restaurants and bars of Portland. The room was very clean and quiet and had a great feel to it. Although the bathroom did not contain a shower, it was nice to take a relaxing bath. The breakfast including scones, yogurt, berries and coffee was delicious. We would definitely stay here again.
Joseph and Martha were great hosts. The space itself is very private and quiet, and the house is located a pleasant walk away from the Old Port area, which was great. Breakfast was a nice touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
It was a joy to stay here. Everything was as promised, and Joseph and Martha could not have been more accommodating. They provided us space for our bikes, and were open to us arriving earlier than the posted check-in time. They also left us a delicious breakfast outside our the room. Joseph and Martha's hospitality contributed greatly to the wonderful experience we had in Portland.
We had a great experience staying here. We arrived a little earlier than anticipated and Martha was quick to accommodate the change of plans. When we walked in she welcomed us in and showed us to our room. Everything was set up nicely and prepared for us, and Martha covered everything we could have wanted to know with her introduction. The room was spacious and comfortable, and we felt nearly the same level of privacy that a hotel could offer (the bedroom itself has a "foyer" and a few steps leading up into it). We woke up to a delicious breakfast of yogurt, berries, scones, and coffee left in a basket right outside our door, just as promised. As we packed up and left, Martha was downstairs to say goodbye. We'll be back to stay agin if we're ever in the area, and you should too!
We really enjoyed staying in Portland with Joseph and Martha.
Joseph and Martha were amazingly welcoming, and they provided us with very useful information about Portland before and during the stay. It was really nice to talk with them.
The room was exactly as listed, spacious, clean, cozy and on the top floor so there's good privacy. The homemade breakfast was delicious!
Overall, it was a very positive experience. We highly recommend this listing!
Everything that was stated in the description was accurate..would definitely stay here again
This is the 2nd time that I stay with Martha and Joseph. I stayed for 2 nights and then came back for 1 night a few days later.
The room is very large, clean and comfortable. What I like the most is the en suite private bathroom that I do not have to share with anyone.
The other thing I like staying with Martha and Joseph is the selection of movies from Netflix that I can watch.
For breakfast, Martha left a basket outside of the room early every morning. That works very well for me as sometimes I needed to leave early.
Martha also welcomed me when I arrived early on my last stay. I really appreciated having the room ready ahead of time.
Parking in the front is also very easy. The location is convenient to go anywhere. I certainly will stay with Martha & Joseph every time I come back to Portland.

Martha and Joe both grew up in Freeport, Maine. Joe knows a lot about what Maine has to offer, including the off the beaten track places that aren't in the tourist publications. Martha is a fiber artist, with an active studio in the house where she gives classes on knitting, spinning, doll making, quilting...
Martha is also an accomplished maker of scones and other breakfast fare. Joe will be making the coffee.
