We are a cooking family and our kitchen is in near constant use. The kitchen is the first room you see when entering our house and you should not expect it to appear spotless. As a family we have a relaxed attitude about OUR living areas.
There are 20 steps involved to get from the first floor up to the room which is on the second floor. If you have trouble with steps this room is probably not for you.
We allow guests to use the microwave and store foodstuffs in the refrigerator. If you think you are going to want to use the kitchen more extensively please discuss it with us prior to booking.
If you are not going to be able to check-in earlier than 10 p.m. please book with another host, sorry no exceptions.
The TV is attached to a Roku player only. Netflix is provided. No cable or satellite TV is provided.
We have had a few complaints that we have a claw foot tub but no shower so if you plan on staying with us keep in mind that there is NOT a shower.
All children (including babies) count as people, so two parents plus a child would be 3 guests. The 3rd guest is $25 per night.
You will be provided a key so that you may come and go at will during your stay. You must always use the back door which is adjacent to the driveway where your packing spot is located on the right hand side of the driveway. One of the images in the listing shows both where you should park and the house entrance.

A stay with Martha & Joe? For us, it was like being welcomed by friends we haven't seen in too long. Good friends with a warm and comfortable space for visitors, great breakfast, and wonderful conversations.
We would highly recommend staying with them when visiting Portland. Great people, comfortable bed, and a cool claw foot tub for a nice bubble bath in a private bathroom.
Martha and Joe, thank you so much for opening your home to us and making us feel so welcomed. You guys are the best!
We arrived late in the evening but Joseph and his wife were very accommodating and gave clear instructions about where to park. He even helped us (inexperienced Texans) get our car up the snowy embankment! Whew!!
We woke early in the morning and found breakfast waiting for us by our front door. The room and bed were very comfortable. Will definitely stay here again if we ever make it back to Portland!
Jo and Martha were very welcoming. The room itself is large, and was warm in the middle of winter. There's a private bathroom attached. Breakfast in the morning was delicious.
We loved staying with Martha & Joseph. The room was a quiet, attic-like space, which I loved. Very warm and filled with light. Breakfast was the best, as it came every morning in a basket outside our door. Such a charming place!
Joseph and Martha were fabulous hosts who provided us with comprehensive directions and interesting haunts in Portland before and during the stay. Their house is located in a comfortable location about 20 minutes walk from the main places of interest. The room was cosy, with a personal bathroom which we especially appreciated - it felt awesome soaking in a warm bath after being out in the cold. The provision of Netflix also allowed us to have an abundance of choice of shows to watch while we unwind. Last but not least, Martha makes the best scones served with maple yoghurt and warm berry compote for breakfast, alongside tea or coffee. Martha was also very nice to accommodate our request to have our breakfast served earlier on our second day. Overall, it was a lovely stay at Joseph's and Martha's quaint house, and we would recommend it to anyone heading to Portland :)
We LOVED our stay at Joe & Martha's home!! The location was great- we walked downtown to sight see and adventure both days. The room was everything we could have asked for- spacious, warm and cozy. The homemade breakfast was amazing and the perfect way to start our days.
Joe and Martha were welcoming and thoughtful, curious about our needs and wants but by no means overbearing or nosy. It felt like they really wanted our weekend to be great, which we appreciated.
The bed was SO comfortable we stayed in it more than expected! Having Netflix and wifi was a treated for the evening we stayed in, and the room had lovely natural light. We also appreciated the literature/guides of fun things to do & see in Portland that were provided.
We have a great experience at Joe & Martha's. If I ever travel back to Portland, I would surely stay again (and I have already recommended it to friends!).
Joe & Martha- thank you so much for opening your home to us. We are so grateful!
I missed the window to leave you a review due to holiday/seasonal ick issues but I did want to make it clear here that we enjoyed hosting you both so much. You were ideal guests; friendly, enthusiastic, considerate. Please do keep us in mind for your next trip to Portland. We would love to see you both again.
Joseph sent us some weather information before we left home which was very helpful. Martha welcomed us warmly. The room was the right price and fit our needs perfectly. It was particularly soothing to slide into a hot bath when we got in from a cold evening out. Just minutes from downtown Portland by car or foot.

Martha and Joe both grew up in Freeport, Maine. Joe knows a lot about what Maine has to offer, including the off the beaten track places that aren't in the tourist publications. Martha is a fiber artist, with an active studio in the house where she gives classes on knitting, spinning, doll making, quilting...
Martha is also an accomplished maker of scones and other breakfast fare. Joe will be making the coffee.
