The space
Modern, comfortable, compact yet spacious open plan home with stunning views of the nearby mountains and ocean. Our vocational background in design provided an opportunity to design the house ourselves (with the help of an architectural draftswoman) specifically for this site. We lived in a caravan here for 18 mths whilst designing and building the house, allowing us to study the site through different seasons as we developed the plans. Our design philosophy was to create a compact & practical bespoke home with a sensitivity to the natural surrounds. Utilising moving partitions between living and bedroom areas creates a sense of openness & spaciousness. The entire house can be centrally heated from the log burner and heat pump in winter, and implements passive solar design principles. We wanted to maximise the sun and provide views of the mountain vistas from living, dining and bedroom areas. The building also houses our own artwork, furniture & a collection of books for you to enjoy.

Guest access
You will have access to the entire space and grounds surrounding the property. There will be nobody else on the property during your stay.

Other things to note
In cold conditions:

In very cold and frosty conditions please take care on the front entry steps, although they are painted with a non-slip coating, they can still be slippery in icy conditions.

In Windy Conditions:

Please note that for building regulatory codes we are situated in an "extreme high wind zone". Although Kaikoura is not know to be a windy place to be on average, we do experience gale force winds a few times a year.

The house is built according to the "extreme high wind zone" code and is built to withstand stronger gusts than we actually experience. If during your stay you were to experience extreme gales, you will most likely notice the house has a good amount of flexibility and movement.

This can be a disconcerting experience for some and it can be useful to wear earplugs if this occurs during the night. On the odd occasion it can cause power outages.

As disconcerting as it may be, it is important to know that the house is safe in these conditions and that it is important to remain indoors whenever possible until this has passed.

We estimate to have experienced between 2 and 7 of these weather patterns per year during the last 10 years.

Check out time:

Please check-out by 10 am so we can prepare the space for new guests, or contact us to request a late check-out. It is of upmost importance to us to maintain the quality of all of our guest's experiences and therefor ask for co-operation and adherence to check-in and check-out times.

Additional Guests (beyond 2):

In the case of travelling with children, please note that infants under the age of 2 years stay for free. Please advise if you would like our port-a-cot, bedding and highchair set up for your little one.

We have an extra guest fee for children (aged 2 and above) and adults of $60 per night per guest. This is calculated at booking stage.

Location

Kaikoura, Canterbury, New Zealand

Our evaluated position between foothills of the seasonally snow clad Seaward Kaikoura Range and the Pacific Ocean make for stunning views and a unique micro climate. Kaikoura's township, tourism hub and main supermarket is only a 10 min drive south via SH1 and Beach Rd. Koura Bay Lodge is a 15 min walk away, which has a licensed restaurant and golf course. Our in-house visitor book provides information on Kaikoura's main amenities, tourism attractions and some some local insights you might not find otherwise.
Positioned on a 4 acre block of gentle sloping land bordering onto rural lifestyle and farm property. The 1 acre covenant of mature native Kanuka on our eastern boundary provide privacy, shade and great summer wind shelter. It’s also a natural hub for the local bird life coming and going. Several hundred native trees have been planted in the last few years on our property and we are beginning to benefit from their stage of growth. Horses and sheep graze the paddocks surrounding our property, making for a unique semi-rural NZ experience.

We have been living here for 7 yrs and enjoy the natural beauty and seasonal changeability of the area immensely. We have a son, Oscar, who is 5. We are both artists and draw inspiration from the solitude and beauty of the ever changing area. Susie has a passion for snowy mountains and I love the coastline - Kaikoura seemed like the obvious choice of a place to settle. We also love to travel, and favour AirBnB to find unique places to stay abroad. Our interests include music, food, planting trees, surfing and skiing.
