This is a quaint, simple local style home. Please read entire listing before selecting. If you are looking for the best deal on Kauai with the most central location, look no further. But this home does not come with 'bells and whistles'!
This quaint room is designed more for the single traveler or two folks that don't necessarily need to sleep in the same bed. There are two twin beds in this room in and L shape and a built in desk and chair. The room has ample closet space at one end and at the other end is a screened window with glass louvers. Outside this window you will hear the tranquil sound of flowing water in the koi pond 24/7 and the aquaponics system in the backyard. Many folks love this feature but occasionally some don't. You might want to bring ear plugs if the soothing trickle is a concern. Of course you have full access to the large, well stocked kitchen (you provide the food) and a large comfortable living room. We have a large screen TV to view DVDs. (no cable)
This home is quite the 'self-serve' type. Please relax and make yourselves at home. We allow your privacy and appreciate ours. There is a chance that you might not see us. We all lead verybusy lives, but you can always text us if you need something.
There will be a hand drawn map of the neighborhood on the information table in the kitchen.
Many stores do not provide bags for your purchases. Or they will sell you them. But we encourage you to take your own. There are many bags to use in the kitchen. Look around; there are some inside the closet behind the back door.
NOTE; It is possible to list a weekend rate or a holiday rate on AirBnB, but not single night rate. The single night rate for this room is $64 a night. If it is a two night stay, it is $55 a night.
If you would like to leave items in our home while hiking, this is doable. There is a $5. a day charge. Just let us know and we will store in a secured area.
The guests will have access to a large kitchen that is well-equiped. There are plenty of salad dressings, and other condiments in the refrigerator for your use and lots of spices above the stove, but you provide your own food. The living room that is equipped with a DVD player and many DVDs (but not regular TV). The bathroom is shared. Outside the backdoor are bicycles, boogie boards, surfboards, etc. You are welcome to use these but please text me if you do so I can give you the combination for the lock, etc. (But please do not use the back door to enter and exit the home, just to get equipment). Speak up if you need anything.
Interaction with Guests
I do not interact with the guest a lot. I like to respect their privacy. Plus I work a lot. As you probably know, I am a taxi driver and I give tours. But I'm always accessible via text.
This neighborhood was established in the 50s and is an old Japanese neighborhood of course many of the original residents have passed away. But this is a peaceful neighborhood. It is also extremely convenient. You'll find many restaurants in the neighborhood plus access to the bus and the laundromat, the hospital, health food store, fish market, the movie theater and the mall, etc. etc.
There are a few ways to get to our home from the airport. The easiest is a taxi. To catch a cab, go outside the baggage claim and pick up the taxi phone located on the information booth. The dispatcher will ask you your name, how many people and destination. You can just tell them, "Lihue". The taxi will be there in less than three minutes in the taxi pick up area; which is designated by a sign. When you get in the taxi, give the driver my address and tell them, "It's the first street behind AT&T". Many know who I am so tell them, "Carrie's house". The fare will be about $10. Please remember to tip then. Almost all services in America rely on tips.
The public bus is also an option, but can not be used if you have large luggage. You can get off at Walmart or the next stop, Wilcox Hospital which is even closer to our street. The bus costs $2.50. You will then have to walk 2 or 3 blocks to our house.
If you are renting a car just use your GPS and you will be at our house in a jiffy.
(Just a side note, if you are renting a car, please be mindful of my neighbors. If turning a car around in a driveway in the dark, please remember to turn your headlights off because many headlights have been known to shine into my neighbors bedrooms. Of course turn them back on after back on the street. Also when locking a car (which probably is not even necessary), please lock it from the inside switch so the horn does not honk. If you lock it with the key mechanism, the horn honks. Local style is not honking. Mahalo).
Other Things to Note
I'd like to remind you that this home is very old. Some things just don't shine out the way they used to. You will not find a better listing at such a good price. I sincerely hope you have come to enjoy Hawaii.
No smoking on property.
Park your car horizontally on the grass and make sure you allow room for others. The car should face south or you could receive a ticket. Don't block the mailbox unless its after 4pm (and you are leaving before 10am) or if it is Sunday. If there is a third car, please park in front of 3304 Elima St. This is the house on the other side of the street with a disc in the front yard. Again, make sure the tires are horizontal and off the pavement. DO NOT park directly across from our house, as the neighbors have not given permission to do so. NEVER park in the driveway.
Please turn off electricity when not in use.
Please leave the bathroom door open after use.
Please remove footwear before entering house.
Do not roll luggage through house.
No open food containers in bedrooms and cover food in the refrigerator.
Exactly as described online. Clean, simple, good beds, great location. Quieter and more psychic space than we imagined. The community kitchen is huge, and even though there were a few other people staying in the house, we hardly saw anyone the whole time we were there. Beds were comfortable. Very close to airport and convenient to all the beautiful south Kauai sights. Carrie was warm and a great communicator.
We were on the island for a wedding and the group house rental ended a day earlier than our flight. We were grateful that Carrie accepted a one day reservation and the price couldn't be beat. We just neede a Place to crash and store out bags. She will store bags for $5/day. The beds were fine, neighborhood looks a little run down, but it was quiet and safe. She was very responsive to texts and emails. Overall, it was a fine experience and I would recommend it as a place to crash. Fancy vacation rental it is not---but I think the pictures show that if you pay attention. There are a million rules (don't drag your roller bag, pick it up), but again, those are disclosed in the details. There are ponds or something in the back that have water running all night and are very loud. I used earplugs and slept fine: husband didn't have earplugs and couldn't sleep well at all.
Carrie was a wonderful host! She helped with some questions we had about our upcoming kalalau trip. She is a wealth of knowledge. We would definitely stay with her again and will be recommending her place to our friends with upcoming plans to Kauai.
My 2nd visit to Carrie's house. All went well as the 1st visit the week before.
Carrie was really welcoming me and gave me a variety of information that I needed. The room itself was as described and kitchen was equipped with almost everything you need if you cook there. If you are sensitive to cold weather be fully aware that there is no window glass and it might be cold at night. The location was perfect and very calm neighbors.
We needed a landing place when we got to Kauai that was close to the airport and central to everything. Carrie's place was perfect. It's clean, quaint, and had really great vibes. :)
Carrie was awesome about everything. We had questions about shuttles, taxis, and needed recommendations about the island, especially since we we headed to the Napali Coast.
Plus, we needed to leave a bag at her place while we hiked Kalalau and she offers bag storage at a low fee.
We needed a taxi ride back to the airport and Carrie was able to hep us out. Overall, I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
Mahalo nui loa for everything Carrie!!
I stayed at Carrie's house for only one evening and night, but it was as described, friendly and comfortable. I didn't adjust to the sound of the water as well as others have.

I've been on Kauai since 1986 and can't imagine living anywhere else. I was born in Vermont and have lived many other places, but Kauai is definitely home. Everyday I feel grateful that God allows me to live on this incredible island.
One of my many interests is aquaponic gardening, which I do here on my property. I have a unit that consists of two 4' x 16' grow beds and four three hundred gallon fish tanks. Come and see!
I lead a very busy life and wear many hats.
Driving a taxi and giving private island tours is one of my hats.
