The Space

A traveler’s haven awaiting on the basement level of this Early California Estate. It is secluded and has its own outside entrance making it intriging, super private and peaceful.

Located in upscale Glendale residential neighborhood among choice properties, it sits up and two hundred ft. back from the street overlooking the San Fernando Valley.

The space is substantial, 1200 sq. ft. (110 m2) in this lofty basement suite with 8ft. (2.5m) ceilings, and is cushioned by soundproof walls. It does have windows, and was recently restored, the floors covered with tile and carpeting for sheer livability. The space is yours alone.

Amenities - A media room w/58" flat screen TV, set up as a screening room w/plush recliner chairs, doubles as bedroom with a new queen bed not found better this side of Eden. There is also a single real bed and a queen sofa bed in the living room allowing for max. 5 guests.

A new bathroom and large granite wet bar w/refrigerator open up to huge living room featuring 8 ft. pool table. The suite has central air conditioning/heating, making it a super comfortable nest to return to. Lounge or play games at the corner card table, it is yours to enjoy.

Wi-Fi is provided.

Coffee and tea - There is a coffee machine but otherwise no cooking facilities in the suite, however you will find cereal out on the patio along with microwave oven and a new barbeque grill.

Patio and Pool - The Covered brick patio with tiled counter and sink is next to 20 x 40 ft. pool set in large landscaped yard that offers almost total privacy. That my friend may be as close as you and I will come to Eden. The patio faces north so it is shielded from the midday sun, making it an enviable spot to raise a glass of wine at sunset.... and ponder life

Pool warning: It has one very deep end so it is for good swimmers only; minor children under direct adult supervision and the sole responsibility of the guest.

Parking - There is ample free off street parking on our private circular driveway in front of the house.

Access - Only minutes to freeways with easy access to the area: fifteen minutes to Hollywood, Universal Studios, Downtown L. A. and Burbank airport - forty to Santa Monica beaches, Malibu and beyond.

Fine bakeries and restaurants are within minutes, like favored mountainside Castaway Restaurant with its marvelous view of the Valley, and sparkling avant-garde Americana-at-Brand shopping, dining and entertainment complex.

The estate was built in 1923 when the Roaring Twenties were just getting into full swing, thirty years before John Steinbeck published his epic novel "East of Eden". This is a prime Early California time piece reminiscent of the Charleston and the speakeasies during Prohibition. All now settled in harmony and committed to quality, proud of its heritage.

That my friend is East of Eden, replete with trees and citrus, but no apple tree in the midst, - and no snake to tempt!

Pres. Herbert Hoover slept here two nights; the 2nd owner sat next to Howard Hughes when he flew the Spruce Goose. The third owner is ready to approve you as guest.

Because now it is your turn - come visit.

ATTENTION, we have two more rentals on the property: 'Sundowner's Private Retreat' with full kitchen and 'Honeymooners' Secret Hideaway' upstairs in the pool house, both very different and both listed with Airbnb. Check them out.

  • John and Fe are amazing host! Very welcoming, very taking care of, and very fun! We shared good moments with them both.. The house is beautiful, charming, very clean, exactly like in the pictures! Absolutely no regrets, my family have had a great time over there, and when they'll come back they'll stay at John&Fe's again! Do not hesitate, you won't regret!

  • We had a lovely stay at John and Fee located in a quiet neighbourhood. Clean and cosy. We really enjoyed the pool table in our apartment in the basement and the big pool area and garden in backyard.
    We warmly recommend this place.

  • John and Fe were great! They welcomed my coworker and I, very late at night I might add, with smiles and kindness! The neighborhood is B-E-A-utiful, safe and quiet. The place was definitely a throwback, and we enjoyed it. The backyard and pool were lovely as well, although it was cold and rained so we didn't get to enjoy it which was kind of a bummer. I was under the impression that we would have the whole house however, we stayed in the converted basement. Fe and John were in the house above us, but you can't hear anything that goes on up there which is nice.

The location is great if you don't care to be in the middle of the LA scene. We took a 15min drive to Griffith Observatory, which has AWESOME views, and about 20-30min from Hollywood.

Overall we had a great time! John and Fe's place was cozy and I would recommend staying there!

  • This was my second time staying with John and Fe at the East of Eden. I'm a business traveler and this property has everything I need. John and Fe, you'll definitely see me for a third visit in early February, only this time, without all of the holiday madness! Until next time...

We are FELOLITA (Fe) and JOHN ANDERSEN, and you are correct: We were not born here but had to travel like you to meet in Southern California, but that was in the last century. So welcome, let us get acquainted; we were both islanders but from far away places. Fe was born on one of the two thousand inhabited islands in the Philippines (but did not visit them all) and came here to make the most out of life. She is a nurse and works for an international company that tests new products for pharmaceutical manufacturers. She fled a hot sun and oppressive humidity for a kinder sunny climate, but never from her genuine love of people which we both share. She still loves the water and fresh seafood, but above all life, music, and happy laughter. No wonder she turned into such a wonderful cook par excellence. John was born in Denmark, developed a taste for traveling early and getting away from a dreary overcast climate. He came to the USA for college and never stopped seeking new horizons. In the process he discovered that language is not just a study course, but something to practice free lance while you meet this big wonderful world of ours, which grew immensely after he parked his childhood shoes. He lived in South America, did international business and visited half of the so called countries, for you must get out if you want to meet the world and develop appreciation. In time he also followed his dream and founded a company in the medical business. Nothing here is run of the mill. Together we have prepared a comfortable and very private home for you away from home, where you can kick your shoes off and relax in privacy. The pool is large and the sunshine plentiful, and we shall greet you when you come up the longest driveway East of Eden. Welcome to Early California;. - now kick them off.
