The Space

(note: please inquire about discounts for stays of 4+ nights, and if this space isn't exactly what you're looking for, check out my other two listings for unique alternatives)

The penthouse about which so many have inquired is now available!!! Located on top of the hill in Isabel II, this is a chance to stay in a convenient, affordable, and one-of-a-kind space. It is the only apartment on the second floor of the building and has great views of the surrounding area, the last Spanish Fort in the New World, and the ocean/main island. The apartment includes a stocked kitchen, living/dining area, bedroom area with a comfortable Simmons queen bed, an outdoor deck area, wi-fi, computer speakers for your laptop or smart phone, and your beach necessities: full-size beach towels (rare in PR), telescope chairs, and a cooler. An air mattress and extra bedding is also available for a second guest.

This apartment is definitely a great chance to experience local life in Vieques as well as having the convenience of having everything you need within walking distance: get fantastic Puerto Rican coffee at Roy's or La Panaderia in the mornings, stroll through one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world on the way to a drink and views at Al's Mar Azul in the afternoon, and walk down to holiday festivities in the town plaza at night. The benefits of the in-town locale does come with the occasional noise of daily life: the trucks coming off the cargo ferry, roosters crowing (although that's pretty much everywhere on the island!), and the occasional kid playing reggaeton while driving down main street on a weekend night.

While I spend most of the time in the States, if I am not in Vieques during your stay, the property manager lives nearby if a problem should arise. Also, having lived and worked on the island for a number of seasons, I am happy to provide advice regarding any and all aspects of the island, and to answer any questions you might have before and during your trip via airbnb, phone, or e-mail.

2 guest maximum, and I generally limit stays to two nights or more, although I will sometimes take single night reservations depending on the existing schedule. Also, check-in/check-out is generally flexible, but if schedules of those checking in and checking out conflict, you are welcome to stash any gear, use the bathroom, etc. in the locked extra apartment if arriving early or leaving on a late flight or ferry.

  • Had a great time in Vieques again, and Mason's place was the perfect spot for us! He was able to meet us by the ferry and it was a short walk up to his place. From there its a 5 min walk to the panaderia, the small grocery, and Coqui Fire, a great newer restaurant Mason told us about. Try Taverna too for dinner..
The apt has everything you need to eat in or go out; we did both in equal measure. And making coffee in the percolator was great too. The place was neat, clean, and had a great nighttime breeze. Great little patio with views of the fort and the ocean too.
Mason was a great host -- easy to deal with and if you need/want anything he'll try to oblige you.
Just fyi: We rented a scooter to get around, which we enjoyed more than the jeep we rented last time. Just watch out for horses!

  • Mason was above and beyond helpful, and his apartment is perfectly charming. The beer, water and juice in the fridge was an especially nice touch. Mason has great recommendations about places to go on the island, and is as hands on/hands off as you want him to be. We had an amazing time on Vieques, and we would definitely stay in Mason's apartment again.

  • This apartment rocks. It is adorable, clean, down-to-earth and close (but not too close) to downtown. It's perched on a hill and thus lives up to its street name of Buena Vista. The internet worked great and we were even able to stream videos without issues.
Mason was a wonderful and courteous host. He not only stocked the fridge and provided maps with a simply written but very informative guide to the island, but he gave us a wealth of information in-person and via email. He recommended a not-too-touristy bioluminescence tour with a guide who was an absolute riot. I'd definitely recommend staying here.

  • Mason's place is pretty magical. It's on top of this hill in Isabela II and has a beautiful view of the water and the hillside on the balcony. We spent a week there and had an amazing time, you can walk to all the stores, restaurants and bars. There's a parking spot for you. Full kitchen was great since we were there for a week and didn't want to go out for every meal. And Mason is one of the best hosts I've ever encountered. He is full of recommendations and where to avoid, super helpful in every way. We would see him out around town and talk to him for a while; he's a really great guy. We miss our little penthouse apartment a lot.

  • Mason was the best kind of host you want from airbnb. From the beginning he was so accommodating. I was originally debating staying at an inn/ecolodge type place. But from all the reviews Mason's place seemed perfect. I wrote him with a few questions and he responded immediately and also insured me that I would love his apartment. He was right!

When we arrived the fridge was stocked with water, beer, and fruit. The place was really perfect and so close to town (3 minute walk).

This guy is the real deal. He gave us tips on where to go and even talked about the island's history a bit.

  • Great little place. Perfect for us and Mason was a great and accommodating host. Very awesome to have beach chairs, a cooler and floats for the beach. Oh yes, and also beach towels. The location is great, easy to walk down to places like the bakery, Al's Mar Azul for cocktails, El Sombrero Viejo for Medallas to fill the cooler and all the restaurants. Coqui Fire Cafe, possibly the best food on the island, is only a mere 3-4 blocks away down the hill. Do yourself a favor and go eat there. Jimmy does it right. I hope to be back next year and stay in this little apartment, because it's a great location and you can't beat the price.

  • We actually stayed in all three of Mason's spaces and can tell you they were all, clean, well appointed and comfortable.
Mason was helpful, accommodating and always available for advice and insight.
All in all, a great experience in a fantastic in-town location.

  • Mason is an ideal host. He was in town while we visited and made himself very accessible...provided extras towels, offered to pick up sandwiches for us, let us use the driveway for our rented jeep. He even pulled out the machete and tried to bust open a coconut for us when we inquired about how to cut ours.

The accommodations were no frills but homey. Wonderful cross breezes and sounds of the neighborhood all around us. Everywhere on Vieques is full of life and the Penthouse is no exception. If you like vibrant sounds but are a light sleeper, just be sure to pack the ear plugs...we spent most of our time at the beaches/out and about but appreciated the roof deck seating for a little down time...Perfect at pre-sunset with a pina colada. If you plan to a do a lot of cooking in the apt, I suggest checking with Mason beforehand about the availability of cooking tools you might need. (We only really used the blender and some cups.)

The penthouse is a moment's walk from Post Office, town shops, grocer, health food store, the amazingly tasty Viequenese Panaderia, and a couple of great restaurants. We really enjoyed Cocqui Fire[byob] and Conuco. For the cultural tourism side...there's a view of the old Spanish fort from the apartment and the historic cemetery overlooking the water is a 5 minute stroll away from the apartment.

Would definitely stay here again. Great value, great host. Vieques is incredible.

  • Mason was a very accommodating and friendly host. His fun little apartment that was clean and comfortable and had a nice island feel to it. It was exactly as advertised. The location was great for our purposes: walking distance from the docks, easy to find, etc... It was the perfect to come home to at night after exploring the island.

For some people who want more of an "English Language" location or to avoid taxi drives to the bio-bay or other activities they may want to stay on the other side of the island, but this is what we liked and it definitely had a nice local feel.

    Would rent from again.

  • Apartment was clean and comfortable. Mason made himself available to answer questions or concerns. The apartment is very conveniently located (you can walk to the ferry) and the neighborhood feels very safe.
