About This Listing
Unique apartment with a convenient in-town location. In addition, this apartment has, literally, the best view in town.
(note: please inquire about discounts for stays of 4+ nights, also please shoot me a message before submitting a reservation request for one-night stays as I only accept them depending on other reservations, and if this space isn't exactly what you're looking for, check out my other two listings on the same property--different but equally attractive)
Big upgrades for the 2014-15 season to an already 5-star-rated space!!!
Located on top of the hill in Isabel II, this is a chance to stay in a convenient, affordable, and one-of-a-kind apartment. It is the only unit on the second floor of the building and has fantastic views of the surrounding area, the last Spanish Fort in the New World, and the ocean/main island. The apartment includes a stocked kitchen and dining room, a dedicated living room, a bedroom with air conditioning and a comfortable Simmons queen bed, and a small sun room/half bedroom with a day bed (or inflatable full bed) for third guest. There is also wi-fi, computer speakers for your laptop or smart phone, and your beach necessities: full-size beach towels (rare in PR), telescope chairs, and a cooler, among other items.
This apartment is definitely a great chance to experience local life in Vieques as well as the convenience of having everything you need within walking distance--get fantastic Puerto Rican coffee at Roy's or La Panaderia in the mornings, stroll through one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world on the way to a drink and views at Al's Mar Azul in the afternoon, and walk down to holiday festivities in the town plaza at night. The benefits of the in-town locale does come with the occasional noise of daily life and the roosters crowing in the a.m. (although that's pretty much everywhere on the island!)
If I am not in Vieques during your stay, the property manager lives nearby if a problem should arise. Also, having lived and worked on the island for a number of seasons, I am happy to provide advice regarding any and all aspects of the island, and to answer any questions you might have before and during your trip via airbnb, phone, or e-mail.
3 guest maximum ($30/night for 3rd guest) (waived for kids 8 and under--Vieques is a great place for kids!), and I generally limit stays to two nights or more, although I will sometimes take single night reservations depending on the existing schedule. Also, check-in/check-out is generally flexible, but if schedules of those checking in and checking out conflict, you are welcome to stash any gear, use the bathroom, etc. in the locked extra apartment if arriving early or leaving on a late flight or ferry.
Anything and everything in the apartment.
Interaction with Guests
As much or as little as desired. I think I'm fairly competent at reading people and generally default to staying out of guests way and erring on the side of privacy.
Everything you need within walking distance, and great neighbors to boot! While Vieques is a rough-around the edges kind of place and I definitely live on one of the nicest and safest blocks in Isabel.
Publicos (taxi vans) are generally easy to flag down from main street if you don't rent a Jeep/Car/Moped. They're reasonable cost-wise, though they won't take you to a couple of the most remote beaches.
Please respect the apartment as if it were your own. Vieques can be a pretty quiet place after dark and neighbors can hear everything at all hours as windows are always wide open to let the breeze through. so please no loud noise or music after 9:00/10:00 on weekends.
And if you could be mindful of the vintage pajilla chairs--don't sit on them while wet, etc--it would be appreciated!
No Smoking in the apartment!
Mason was very responsive and attentive. It look like he has been working on his house and when I stayed there was some part of the house that wasnt finished. Some part of the room look different than what was shown. When I got there he just got done with tiling the deck so we were able to use it. Bathroom was sort of small and shower pressure wasnt so powerful. The penthouse was spacious and the lights in the living room was cute but I think its was a little overprice. $90 a night would have been reasonable especially during the fixer and upper process. Once the place is finalized i believe it will have a lot of potential.
For clarification, work on the apartment was completed when Joanne stayed there. I believe she is referencing the tools and materials outside of the downstairs apt (which was used as the base for the upstairs upgrades) or maybe the exposed beams and corrugated ceilings look unfinished? Apologies for the unsightliness outside the downstairs apt. I've cleaned the area and gotten everything stored out of the way.
Mason was a great host and his apartment is in an awesome location. Great design, al the amenities and quite comfortable.
We rented a moped right down the street. The patio/roof deck was very romantic.
He gave good recommendations, knows the area.
Bottom line: stay here if you go to vieques.
Mason was incredibly accommodating, kind, and a great host. The space was perfect, though it is noisy, for my taste... Particularly on Friday and Saturday night.
Mason is constantly seeking to improve, and happily shares what he knows about the island. If you don't mind street noise, roosters, and intense stairs to get to the front door, this is an ideal place, with an exceptional host!
Excellent choice! You wont regret if you stay in Mason's, everything is very clean so you will feel at home! The neiborhoud is very friendly so you will always find good company.
I loved Mason's penthouse in Vieques! We had such a wonderful time and will definitely stay again if we return (I hope we return!). Mason was an awesome host, he gave us great advice about the area, told us which beaches and restaurants to visit and which ones to avoid. He takes great care of his apartments and seems to have a great relationship with the neighbors. The small neighborhood is filled with Vieques locals which provides a nice experience in contrast to the more touristy Esperanza area on the other side of the island. Everything in Isabel II is within walking distance, but I highly recommend renting a jeep so you can see the whole of Vieques and explore some of the more remote beaches. The house was lovely, charming and a bit quirky, just like Vieques itself! The neighborhood roosters are pretty noisy some mornings, but really it just adds to the charm. The deck had a great view of the town and ocean. My only complaint is that we didn't stay longer.
This place was so perfect for our vacation in Vieques. The location couldn't have been better, as it allowed us to experience the town of Isabelle II, through more of a local's perspective. We were able to walk to our favorite restaurant for dinner (coqui fire) among many other cafés and shops. We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our balcony where we watched the sunset in the evenings. The apartment itself was perfectly bohemian in an anthropologie-esque sort of way. It was super comfortable and the open floor plan allowed it a loft kind of vibe. It was full of thoughtful details including eclectic vintage pieces throughout. Mason was an awesome host, and told us about great secluded beaches to check out around the island as well as tips on renting a car. We had so much fun here!
Mason was a tremendous host! He was incredibly amiable as well as knowledgable not only about activities on the island, but the general logistics of getting around. If given the opportunity, Mason's got great insight to other aspects of actually living on the island that most may not think of while visiting for a short period, as well as a variety of other subjects, so don't be shy and have a chat with him. Otherwise, he's there as much or as little as you want him to be.
The apt itself was perfect for my boyfriend and my needs; it was actually more spacious than I expected. The kitchen was open with all the appliances you need, which was great since we actually cooked the majority of our meals there. The place is filled with thoughtful details you'll enjoy, like a wood panel and stone shower floor, or the arched stain glass feature in the bedroom.
The location was ideal; not right in the middle of the town where you'd have more noise or people walking by, but certainly close enough to walk anywhere in Isabel II. Plus, being on top of a hill gives it a great view of the ocean and fort. The neighbors are all incredibly friendly and overall we never felt security was ever a problem.
Having a great place to stay with a genial host made our stay in Vieques all the more enjoyable. I'd highly recommend staying here and would certainly come back!
