I stayed at the Sugar Shack for about a week in November with my girlfriend and a group of our friends. I have visited Kona two times before and this was the best experience I've had; a big part of this was being able to stay in the Sugar Shack.
Prior to our trip, John was very helpful with recommendations on where to eat and which local services and tours were worthwhile and reputable.
The Sugar Shack is extremely spacious. During the entire trip, we never felt on top of one another and it was always easy to find a quiet place to relax alone if you wanted to. The kitchen had everything you would need and ample space to store provisions. We went to Costco on the first day to stock up on food for the week.
There is a small private beach that opens to a small cove within a very short walk from the house. Other, larger coves are within short driving distance and feature some of the best snorkeling I have ever experienced. In general, the house's location is excellent.
And the hot tub. We spent many nights enjoying the hot tub with the sound of the surf crashing nearby. It's worth noting that this is a residential neighborhood so you should try to contain your noise to a reasonable level (we may have been a little loud one night - sorry!). But, you can't enjoy the hot tubs at the resorts into the wee hours of the night/morning; so if I have to keep my voice down to do it, I'm happy to do that. Major bonus.
We were all very sad to have to leave the Sugar Shack. We have already determined that we want to come back for another stay.
Thanks so much, Millie and John! We had the best time!
We were a party of five spending four nights in Big Island. Staying in such an amazing house matches the awesomeness of Big Island.
John sent me an e-mail with detailed instructions and it was enough to compensate the fact he was not in town during our stay.
The house is perfect for up to six guests. The jacuzzi in the back porch is a plus. I have plans to visit Big Island again soon and I'll certainly stay there again if it is available
Excelente estadía , disfrute de las comodidades de la casa y todos los servicios funcionaron perfectamente bien, muy buena ubicación, fácil acceso y cercanía a las costas mas interesantes. Recomendable.
Even of some minor problems we had the most beautiful time on Big Island. The house is wondeful, the location ist perfect and the view from the lanai is unbeatable. Everybody in the neighborhood was so helpful! John is a great host an he fixes any problem in no time - even if he's not on Hawaii. We loved our stay in Big Island an John's house an are looking forward to come back as soon as possible.
John's place is spacious with a great lanai on which to spend time relaxing with friends. It has a casual Hawaiian feel and was perfect for the 6 of us girls looking for a place to base ourselves on the Big Island for a few days.
It's close enough to Kailua-Kona if you want to be near the main action, but far enough away that you can relax and be out of the tourist spotlight.
Great house, in a fine location near one of the best places to swim with mantas. The house was very well set up and was fine for our group of seven. John (the host) was in New York but left very clear instructions.
