Set in a leafy street in Sydney’s inner west, the studio sits in a garden setting at the back of a sprawling Victorian villa. It’s cosy and well-supplied with quality linen and towels. You’ll find pots and pans and cutlery, a litre of milk in the fridge, a microwave and a fantastic espresso machine with Twinings Tea and Grinders coffee supplied. We also leave goodies for your breakfast – muesli, homemade granola, Bourke St Bakery sourdough bread with butter marmalade, jam and milk – but there’s also a great café just a two minute stroll. There’s a two seater couch and a cane armchair and seating for two at the pine table.

The bathroom is straight from the 1980s, ie it’s small and there’s not a lot of marble. But the shower works fine, there’s all the hot water you could ask for, shampoo and conditioner are supplied and the towels are as white as Julia Roberts’ teeth.

No washing machine in the studio but there’s a laundry about a three-minute walk away. (closed on Wednesday)

We have one Italian greyhound but she doesn’t make a fuss.

Guest access

Separate and private, via a side gate that opens to the upper level of the garden.

I stayed here for a week. It was a great place to base myself as I traveled around Sydney on business. Summer Hill train station was close by and it is easy to get into the CBD. Summer Hill also has some great restaurants and a supermarket close by. The cottage was neat and tidy and very cosy. The kitchen is fully set up for your own meals, also a great hot shower and the bed was comfortable. Liz and Mike were welcoming and friendly hosts. Would definitely stay here again.

I chose the Summer Hill area based upon a local friend's advice and it was perfect. I was traveling for business but added a few days to my trip for personal but didn't want to spend a fortune. The cottage is in a safe, quiet neighborhood and just a 5 minute walk to the easy-to-use train system where I was able to get into Darling Harbor in 25 minutes. The cottage was as described and accurate from the pictures. It is perfect for a single or couple looking for a central place in Sydney without spending a fortune. Mike was super helpful and accommodating to my early arrival so I can get in early and take a shower (coming from New York so the 7 am arrival and ability to get a shower was awesome!) Mike was helpful in understanding how to use public transportation. I would recommend 44 Sloan Street Cottage. It's ideal for an inexpensive, central, easy-to-get-around home base and Mike and Elizabeth were awesome hosts. I would defiantly stay here on my next adventure to Sydney! Thank you!

A lovely private cottage! Walking distance from great restaurants and grocery store. Getting into Sydney was easy with a train walking distance as well. We enjoyed our stay!

Liz and Mike provided a cozy, comfortable cottage that was perfect for our visit to Sydney. The bright, sunny mornings--with stained glass topping each window and birds singing all around--were especially memorable. We needn't have rented a car; the cottage is just two blocks from a train station with easy access to all of Sydney and environs. And around the station is a vibrant neighborhood with wonderful restaurants and shops. We truly enjoyed our visit and hope to return someday.

Liz and Michael are fantastic hosts and their studio apartment was fantastic as well. The string of 5 star reviews says it all. I really enjoyed my time at the apartment; the kitchen had all the basics for simple cooking and a small frig (about a meter/yard tall high). The listing was as described, within walking distance of the train station (with frequent service into the Sydney central business district) and various restaurants and grocery store.

Perfect place, especially those people who are not a fan of cities, and would like some occasional down time outside. Beautiful trees in the street and very peaceful patch of garden. Quiet neighbourhood but so close to train station and major bus routes. And the hosts are so welcoming without being invasive. Decent super market near by and take away options!

About Elizabeth

Liz and Mike have been living in Sydney’s inner west for the past 25 years. We’re happy to call our Victorian villa home but we’re both keen travellers. In fact Mike is a well known travel writer and photographer. He writes the Tripologist column for The Sun-Herald here in Sydney and contributes regularly to their travel pages. He’s also the travel editor for a couple more publications. If you want to know anything about travel in Australia – or questions about travel in general - you’ve got a walking encyclopaedia at the other end of the garden path.

Summer Hill is a fantastic little village and it flies below the radar and we like it that way. It’s got a great dining scene with some terrific cafes and a wine bar just up the road and we’re close to both the train station and the Light Rail, which is the best way to get to Chinatown and Darling Harbour.

We’ll do whatever we can to make your visit one to remember.
