Set in a leafy street in Sydney’s inner west, the studio sits in a garden setting at the back of a sprawling Victorian villa. It’s cosy and well-supplied with quality linen and towels. You’ll find pots and pans and cutlery, a litre of milk in the fridge, a microwave and a fantastic espresso machine with Twinings Tea and Grinders coffee supplied. We also leave goodies for your breakfast – muesli, homemade granola, Bourke St Bakery sourdough bread with butter marmalade, jam and milk – but there’s also a great café just a two minute stroll. There’s a two seater couch and a cane armchair and seating for two at the pine table.
The bathroom is straight from the 1980s, ie it’s small and there’s not a lot of marble. But the shower works fine, there’s all the hot water you could ask for, shampoo and conditioner are supplied and the towels are as white as Julia Roberts’ teeth.
No washing machine in the studio but there’s a laundry about a three-minute walk away. (closed on Wednesday)
We have one Italian greyhound but she doesn’t make a fuss.
Separate and private, via a side gate that opens to the upper level of the garden.
Off street parking available for a small car.
Other things to note
We’re both avid travellers. We’ve stayed in a lot of hotels, from no-stars to the Amans and Comos in some of the world’s greatest places. We’ve tried to create somewhere tranquil with a sense of personality, where guests can feel at home, at a reasonable price.
Two guests only, no parties, no pets. The Cottage is non-smoking inside but outside is fine.
One of us is usually home so feel free to call and we’ll do our best to help make your stay all that you’d like it to be.
Liz and Mike have been living in Sydney’s inner west for the past 25 years. We’re happy to call our Victorian villa home but we’re both keen travellers. In fact Mike is a well known travel writer and photographer. He writes the Tripologist column for The Sun-Herald here in Sydney and contributes regularly to their travel pages. He’s also the travel editor for a couple more publications. If you want to know anything about travel in Australia – or questions about travel in general - you’ve got a walking encyclopaedia at the other end of the garden path.
Summer Hill is a fantastic little village and it flies below the radar and we like it that way. It’s got a great dining scene with some terrific cafes and a wine bar just up the road and we’re close to both the train station and the Light Rail, which is the best way to get to Chinatown and Darling Harbour.
We’ll do whatever we can to make your visit one to remember.
