The Chalet is in Chatham and it is a post-and-beam, timberframe home, situated on a seventeen-acre plot, surrounded by other wooded properties, in the rolling foothills of the Berkshire range in Columbia County, New York.
The contemporary appearance of the exterior is finished in rough cedar siding, stained an earthy taupe and, along with the cedar shake roof, blends into its surroundings. Upon entering, the dramatic beam structure of the house is visible. The few artworks displayed on the wall serve to accentuate the architecture and materials of the home.
The Chalet is a spacious, 3-bedroom 1-bath (dual sinks, granite countertop) home, with an attached two-car garage. A cathedral ceiling runs the length of the structure with numerous skylights, and a stone fireplace fifteen feet wide and two stories tall dominates the main living area. The gourmet kitchen, fitted with KitchenAid appliances, flows into the dining area and living room complete with Italian ceramic tiles and wide-board pine flooring. There is a separate laundry/pantry and a full basement. For those who may be so inclined, there is a large Steinway upright in the house for your pleasure.
The village of Chatham and the surrounding area afford many amenities and activities. Several ski areas are within 30 minutes away, including Catamount, Jiminy Peak and Brodie. There are fine restaurants for every budget; boutiques, antique shops and wine stores in the village as well as the landmark Crandell Theater, home to the Columbia County Film Festival. Fall activities include the Columbia County Fair, and places to pick apples and pumpkins. The Chalet is located eighteen miles due west of Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony and one of the most famous music festivals in the world. There are many other concert opportunities including the Leaf Peepers series and Tannery Pond Concerts. Tennis and golf, horseback riding and miles of hiking trails are within easy reach.
We had a lovely winter weekend stay. Some notes:
- due to a lot of snow, we did have to hike up the steep driveway, which is no easy task. it took about 20-25mins with kids and tears were shed. we had to make a few trips up and down.
- the tap water tastes like sulphur.
- it would be wise to bring all of the food and water you'll need, and kleenex, if going in the winter.
- our first night in the house was very chilly and we put on multiple layers, wool socks, slippers, and huddled by the fire.
- the firewood was buried in snow so we made an excursion to get more. lots more!
- eventually the house warmed up and our second night was much more comfortable.
- the shower water temp is marked opposite...hot for cold and vice versa. got very nice and warm once we figured that out!
- layout works out well for 2 couples or a family with 3 kids.
- there are sleds and the driveway has a long steep incline.
Stayed here with my girlfriend for a few days in January. It was a cozy getaway and just the type of place we hoped for. Nice fireplace, comfy bed, kitchen had plenty of utensils for making meals.
There was plenty of firewood outside the house (mostly unchopped and in a bit of snow). We had a good time figuring out where the ax was and how to properly split the logs for the fireplace - but we were pros in no time!
All in all we had a great time and I recommend it to anyone. The driveway was a solid block of ice when we stayed - so we parked on the street and hiked up the driveway. Hope you enjoy your stay at the chalet!
This house is great for a winter get away. The fireplace is a dream come true. The bedrooms are cozy and private. The master bedroom has a skylight for star gazing, this was a pleasant surprise. The kitchen is fully equipped for heavy cooking. It's a great location just a 30 minute drive to Hudson in NY and the Kripula Institute in Mass. We enjoyed our stay there immensely.
We had a great stay at Magaly's home. It was a great weekend in a lovely space.
We had a great time staying at the Chalet! We were in town for a friend's wedding. The location was great - it's right off the Taconic, yet still feels secluded. The house itself had everything we needed including a great common area with a fireplace. We were three couples and we had plenty of room. We would definitely stay there again.
Magaly was a good host, and very responsive to our questions. The house was as advertised, and as others have said, the pictures do not quite do it justice. Highly recommended!
My 1-year old and I spent a weekend at Magaly's house with two friends, one of whom brought her 7-month old twins. It worked out great since one of the bedrooms is on one side of the house and the other 2 are on the other side. The twins weren't kept up by my kid and my kid didn't hear them crying. So - plenty of space, a nice kitchen, great living room and fireplace. We took a nice hike 10 minutes away, and also enjoyed cafes in town. I highly recommend it!
This place was exactly what we were looking for for a winter getaway - a great fireplace with plenty of wood, wonderfully equipped kitchen, short drive from NYC,
It's not exactly a secluded location, but it's set back from the roads and wonderfully cozy with the fire going when it's cold and windy outside.
We made a run to the supermarket and then holed up and cooked and relaxed and ultimately extended our stay by a night with no troubles.
Thank you Magaly!
Do heed the warnings about the drive in the winter. If there is any snow on the ground you will be parking on the road and hiking up to the house.
The house is very nice and comfortable. The only thing that I would mention is that it was very cold out when we got there and it took a long time for the house to warm up. Thank you. We had a wonderful time.
This is a fantastic chalet, much bigger than it looks in the photos.
Perfect for a relaxing get away. in a stunning area.
