Thanks for letting us stay at your nice guesthouse. We enjoyed staying there.
+ Cosy, homey feel of the common area
+ Clean rooms
+ Helpful host
- Smelly toilet
(tip: Red Lava tour was good value for money)
(tip: My Coffee is nice place for ... ;))
Location of accommodation is in the heart of La Fortuna which is nice for easy access of restaurants and shops but it could be noisy till midnight. We are a retired couple and from our experience we would recommend that place just for a short stay and for younger people because of lack of certain comfort aspects like hot shower, storage shelves and chair in rooms. Common room was spacious and nice to meet other travellers.
Manager Heidy was helpful and knowledgeable about any question we asked . Thank you girls !

Peter is a great host! He gave us great suggestions on tours and whats what in the town. He even helped us book some of them.
Rocky is a fun dog! He will play fetch all day if you are game.
The rooms are clean! they have their own bathrooms!
The common space is awesome, bright and breezy. The balcony has a view of the church and park. You can also see the Arenal Volcano from the balcony. The kitchen is stocked with all the stuff you might need to cook up some food. There is also a phone that Peter let us use for some local calls.
The location was super convenient in the town that is about 2 streets wide and 5 streets long. It is less that 2 blocks from about >5 restaurants. Post office is about 30 feet from the front door (across the driveway). It can be noisy occasionally with cars and motorcycles riding by, so I suggest ear plugs.
Christmas celebration in La Fortuna gets a bit loud but fun. There was quite the crowd at the park (about 100 feet away), with the high school marching band and lights and people everywhere.
We really enjoyed staying the Sleeping Indian Guesthouse. It's clearly very well organized, they have tons of free food (which is a big deal since restaurants are expensive in La Fortuna), Heidi gave us great advice, and the view on the balcony is overlooking the church at the main square. Thanks again for a great stay!
We spent only 3 nights with Peter (and Rocki the dog) but we keep an excellent memory of our stay at La Fortuna. The house is perfeclty situated and has a really nice "zen atmosphere" which encourages sharing moments with other guests. Peter is a great and fun host!!!
It was nice and friendly at Sleeping Indian Hostel but I have to split my review in 2 parts:
1. Hostel: Its actually very good value for your money, centrally located, clean and tidy with a big common floor. All rooms have private bathrooms. A kitchen is there too. Its in the heart of La Fortuna. Owner Peter is easy going, relaxed and easy to chat with. Kathy can give you the best local tipps for restaurants which are secret spots. I liked this! BUT:
2. Offers from Peter for example to take you or give you a lift to anywhere you ask for are not cheaper then he is telling you. It was always more expensive to a normal offer or ride by taxi. I did not like it. Thats not the thoughts of AirBnB to make most out of it. The tours he offer are cheaper then in some travel agencies, but make sure that is exactly what you looking for. We got a suggestion but the tour didnt included what we wanted to make.
All in all it was a good stay, I can recommend the hostel, but make your own opinion in case of tours or rides.
This was our first stop in Costa Rica and we enjoyed our stay at the Sleeping Indian! Most important, this is a great location. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the shared space is lovely. Equally important , Peter is a terrific host and has a TON of great recommendations. We ran into a few other guests who were all super-nice and interesting. All in all, a diverse and completely enjoyable experience.
The sleeping Indian Guesthouse is a hostel that hosts people from all over the world. If you are looking for outstanding comfort and luxury this is not the place for you. If you are on a budget and want to stay in a convenient location accessible to Arenal, natural hot spring river, souvenir shopping and the Pure Trek Canyoning (waterfall repel) then this is the place for you!
We had a room with a private bathroom and shower. The bed was okay in terms of comfort. But it suited our budget and was convenient, so no complaints.
Peter has a washer and a dryer for a fee of $5.00 each, which was much needed 5 days into our trip.
Peter is nice and answered any questions that we had about La Fortuna.
ATTENTION: DO NOT trust the guys at Chillout Backpackers (down the street from this place) to book you a hotel in another location. They charged us double than the hotel's asking price. But luckily we were able to dispute it with our credit card company.
Plusses and Minuses:
+ Very awesome midtown location to get to everything fast
+ Very awesome and knowledgeable host open to help you in the best way
+ Very open and comfortable common area right next to all the rooms providing a great way to meet other guests and see what they are up to
- Room was a bit dark even with both lights on (this was one of the rooms without windows)
- Bed was airbed with a foam mattress which was comfortable but nothing like a nice mattress
This place had huge value for the price and all the minuses were trivial compared with the good here. Don’t expect luxury here but do look forward to the perfect jump off point for many adventures. This place was one of our very best decisions when coming to Costa Rica.
Going to cut straight to the point - Gerald was an AMAZING host.
Having just arrived in La Fortuna around 5 or 6pm me and my girlfriend found the Sleeping Indian bang in the centre of La Fortuna, which was a LOT more convienient location to the majority of other hostels/hotels/bedsits and for a good price too.
THE ROOM: The room was just what we needed, nicely spacious with an amazingly comfortable (by far the most of the trip) bed, a room with a fan which was perfect for the climate, a large window and an ensuite bathroom which was very clean and had hot water. We were provided with soap and clean towels too.
COMMUNAL AREAS: The communal area was rarely occupied by anyone else and it sported a television, two balconies on either side, either for a look out onto La Fortuna or into the back yard, which is practically all trees anyway in Costa Rica, a nice hammock which I relaxed in quite a lot, a kitchen, eating table, work top to cut fruit etc all immaculatlely clean. Probably the best thing about this place is how open and bright it is, it really feels welcoming and clean. There are plenty of shops to buy food and all the equipment is there to cook, in fact on our last night me and my girlfriend wanted a Barebecue outside, but there wasn't one so Gerald went and bought one for the flat and we had nice grilled chicken and marshmellows in the Costa Rican warm evening and it was an amazing last night for me.
THE HOST: I can't rave enough about the hospitality of Gerald. From the moment we arrived he made us feel very welcome and helped us a lot with any questions we may have. He even took the time to drive us to places we wanted to visit if he had a free moment. One of the best experiences of the holiday was when Gerald took us to a local swimming spot which had a rope swing and beautiful waterfalls.
My favourite spot to stay in Costa Rica, LA Fortuna has so much to do and the Sleeping Indian is the PERFECT place to do all the fun things from and if I were ever to visit again I would surely choose this place again.
Gerald was the perfect host and dealing with him was an absolute pleasure. Thanks a lot for a great experience!!
