Our cosy, quirky house set in a lovely Dartmoor valley has great views, comfortable accommodation and perfectly placed for touring Devon & Cornwall - quaint villages, moor and sea.
Little Orchard is our lovely, quirky house on the north eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park.
We love our corner of Dartmoor and look forward to welcoming you to our home.
We can offer you a cosy, comfortable double bedroom with en suite shower facilities. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room.
We include a simple tea and toast/cereal breakfast. Cooked breakfast and other meals can be provided by arrangement at extra cost. I love cooking and can always rustle up a delicious meal!
We have a farmhouse style kitchen with large pine table, woodburning range and double doors out to a decked area with tables and chairs - perfect for meals in the summer.
The house has adaptable accommodation with roomy hallways where you can find a quiet spot to read, relax or work.
Our new conservatory is a pretty, sunny spot perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea or a place to read the papers, watch TV and perhaps have a snooze after a busy day walking or sightseeing.
We have a large, mainly untamed garden and a field with bench seats to take advantage of the great views and perhaps have a G&T /picnic. There are smaller terraced parts of the garden to sit in as well as the large decked area. The garden is very much 'work in progress' with ambitious plans afoot.
Chagford (3 miles) is our nearest village or to be exact a Stannary town ( where they used to weigh the tin from the local tin mines). This is a popular tourist spot but has kept its charm with stunning scenery, National Trust property,
individual, independent shops, cafes and pubs as well as great walking country.
Gidleigh Park Hotel is quite famous with its Michelin starred restaurant. We are happy to provide transport (small charge) to Gidleigh Park for our guests who have booked accommodation with us and want to eat there.
Exeter is our nearest city with its historic quay side offering great shopping centres, theatres, cinemas, art galleries, restaurants and tourist attractions. Exeter has good road and rail links and an international airport all within half an hours drive from us.
We are close to the A30 with easy access to North and South Devon towns/beaches and Cornwall.
We are surrounded by beautiful moorland villages and small towns offering tourist attractions, superb walking and cycle routes as well as other outdoor activities such as horse riding and kayaking etc. We are on The Dartmoor Way a circular walking or cycling route which passes our door! The Two Moors Way and The Mariners Way are also close.
Although there is public transport a car is recommended as we are a little off the beaten track. Transport from Exeter can be arranged if we are available.
Guests will enjoy a double bedroom with ensuite shower. Our sunny conservatory is available for guests to enjoy with TV, iphone speaker and comfy sofas to relax on after a busy day seeing the sights.
As your hosts we are on hand to provide for your needs, are happy to chat but also respect your privacy and will leave you to enjoy the space as you wish.
We are surrounded by amazing unspoilt countryside with woodland, moorland, meandering rivers and pretty villages.
Parking on site. No public transport from house but good road and rail links nearby.
We have a dog - Alfie is very friendly and has his own recommendation from a previous guest who after travelling the world after her visit to us called him the 'coolest' dog she met. Praise indeed!
Staying with the Ashby's is a wonderful experience and a highlight of my 4 week trip! Their place is enchanting and made me feel special for being there. The room was nicely decorated with plenty of space for a traveler to feel relaxed. I was pleased to have my own bathroom, and such a nice one. The attention and thought for guest comfort was readily apparent, down details like a coffee and tea tray in the room. They open their whole first floor to guests so there are plenty of spaces to chat or be by yourself, including a wonderful glass roofed sun room. In addition to the room, I had two dinner meals with the Ashby's and both were generous and delicious and a fair price. This was much appreciated since I had hut my leg a day before arriving. They made sure I had my leg up, ice packs and even drove me to the moor and walked with me so I could see the stone rows and circles I came to see. I got a ride into Chagford to get a walking stick and some pain meds and spent a nice visit in a recommended pub. I would highly recommend staying here, outstanding location to dartmoor. I plan to travel back when healthier and this is the first place I will book and for longer than my short two day stay!
Gidleigh was indeed glorious and a large part of that was the welcome I received from Jane and David. They took excellent care of me even though I was mostly out and about. The room and bathroom were lovely, the bed comfortable, and I loved my conservatory sitting room, with a view of the garden and the moors as well. Although I did not have a chance to enjoy the deck, It looked quite lovely and inviting. There was so much to do nearby, I needed at least another week to see it all. I want to go back soon.
We spent one night at the beautiful home of Jane and David. Their home is full of natural charm and character and blends beautifully with the dramatic nature of Dartmoor. Jane and David were welcoming hosts whose company we enjoyed. The dinner and breakfast Jane cooked were very good. The room was cosy with everything we needed. The night was exceptionally quiet. Cleanliness was very good and the bathroom has a very good shower. We wouldn't hesitate to go back or to recommend Jane and David's home to our friends and family. They are very welcome to stay with us in London in the future.
Jane was an excellent host - nothing was too much trouble and she is very knowledgeable about Devon and the surrounding area. The room was perfect (not huge but plenty of storage space if you need it) - clean and comfy and a lovely ensuite shower and wc. I didn't sample Janes cooking as I was treating myself to dinner at nearby Gidleigh Park but it looked (and smelled) delicious so if you are staying for longer you should try it! The location is great for walking on Dartmoor and very relaxing after a hard days hiking on the moors. A hidden treasure.
